A - Pours pitch black like engine oil and leaves a one fingered dark caramel colored head that dies down to a thin lacing ring, very thick and viscous looking as it sticks to the sides of the glass like syrup.

S - Dark roasted chocolate, espresso, coffee beans, char and light smoke.

T - Char and lightly smokey, dark fruit, some caramel malt, coffee beans, espresso, browned molasses, and dark roasted malt from start to all the way to the bitter lingering coffee bean finish.

M - Thick with smooth carbonation, a little sticky; the alcohol presence is evident in the beginning and gives some warming in the back of the throat on the way down.

O - Yep, it's worth every bit I paid for it and considering how good this beer is it's reasonably priced (at least in my area). There's enough beans in this thing to keep you wired for the day, next time I'll have this one with breakfast instead.

22oz bottle of the 2013 vintage poured into tumblers and shared with a friend today, 6/8/2013.

Aroma: All coffee, really more of straight up espresso shots. I like to drink these so I know what an espresso shot ought to smell like- its basically bitter, strong espresso balanced out a bit by sweet chocolate and caramel malts.. but overall its basically strong espresso. I appreciated it, for the style one might expect a little more balance. (4)

Colour: Pours a very dark black viscous body with a nice thick 1cm mocha head that dissipates into a thick film. It's very impressive and creamy looking.. if I poured a little bit into an espresso sized cup and saucer, I could be fooled into thinking this was a shot of espresso. Very dark, beautiful and looks like a beer that'll fill ya up good. (4.5)

Flavour: A bit astringent with the bitter espresso, but I shouldn't be surprised. It's not that far off from a cold shot of espresso mixed with alcohol and roastiness. There is actually a good bit of chocolate, coffee, caramel malts in there which acts as a sweetener, almost. Delicious, coming from a guy who loves drinking espresso shots and/or lattes in the morning though its a bit one-dimensional. (4.25)

Mouthfeel: The strongest part of this beer. incredibly thick bodied, very creamy and well carbonated with a nice viscous, resinous finish that isn't too dry. Aftertaste is mostly bitter espresso finish, but its not overwhelming enough that you have to stop and wait in between sips- you can sip it pretty quickly. The 11% ABV is not evident at all, which is great. (4.75)

Overall: Delicious IRS, a great Stone offering for those who really, really enjoy their coffee black. It kind of overwhelms the base malts, which I can taste in the background and would be really great if they were a bit more malt forward... that being said, maybe 6 months on this beer would really do wonders for it- reduce the very strong coffee-forwardness of the beer to bring out the base malts more. As I really love black coffee and espresso shots, this hits it for me but for those of you who don't like their coffee black, age might do it some good. (4.5)

22 oz bomber poured into a snifter

A - Pitch black, almost a finger of dark mocha head. Looks very thick and viscous. Lacing runs down edges of glass.

S - Espresso and chocolate dominate the aroma. Sweet, roasty malt takes the back seat to the big bold coffee smell.

T - Roasted coffee and sweet chocolate right away when it hits your tongue. Quite bitter, likely from the espresso, but it is balanced by the sweetness of the chocolate. The alcohol is hidden very well. Roasty sweetness lingers after each sip.

M - Super thick and chewy. It coats your tongue and mouth, low-to-moderate carbonation, but enough to make the flavors pop a little. I love big, bold, thick beers like this.

O - Overall, a damn good beer. I prefer the normal IRS from Stone, but that is likely because I am not a coffee drinker. I love coffee flavors in beer, but do not like coffee. Go figure. This is my second bottle, and in the few months this has aged since my last one, it's gotten noticeably better. Less espresso/coffee and more sweetness/chocolate.

A: Slight mocha head around the edges of the glass over black liquid.

S: Espresso, chocolate and toffee.

T: Chocolate, espresso, toffee, aspirin, and caramel.

M: Thick viscosity and a medium to low level of carbonation.

O: Unbelievably tasty, a beautiful beer. This just hits all the right notes.
