Pours a dark ruby red/chestnut brown color with a minimal off-white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind.

Prominent vinous red wine barrel presence in the aroma with subtle oak/toothpick, vanilla bean and vinous dark fruit sweetness. Strawberry and cream with grape, sour cherry, currant and other dark berries. Strong wine character that sort of overpowers there barleywine notes. Underneath, there's some leathery malt, caramel, toffee and muted hops along with hints of date, fig, raisin and port. Very nice!

Medium body with soft carbonation and perfectly integrated vinous red wine barrel flavors that linger over the leathery malts, sweeter notes and resinous hop bitterness into a slightly dry finish. Some dry roasted oak but it's not overpowering or heavily charred. Some vanilla bean and damp wood followed by vinous fruit sweetness, notably grape, strawberry, tart cherry and blueberry. Similar to a barbera wine. Under the heavy barrel presence, there's some leathery malt along with toffee, biscuit, fig and raisin. Really nice beer with complex flavors that are very well balanced. High ABV is excellently masked making this complex beer very easy to drink. Never would have guessed it was 11.2%. This series of barrel aged beers from Stone can be hit or miss, but this might be the best one I've tried up to this point.

Picked up a 500 ml bottle from the Stone Company Store in late July for $15.00.

Beer poured a dark amber with a nice off white head that dissipated quickly.

Nose is wonderfully sweet malts, a bit of citrus, and a bit fruity.

Taste is very sweet but in a good way as there is enough hops to keep things balanced. Malt backbone is huge with a hint of citrus and piney hops, a hint of fruit from the barrels.

Mouthfeel is full and smooth.

Overall this is dangerously drinkable with having close to three years of age on it and the mellowing wine factor. It was a bit pricey but very enjoyable. Recommended if you see it at the Company Store.

poured a very dark amber/brownish burgundy hue with 2 fingers of creme colored head which gave off tons of lacing. a beautiful looking barleywine. the nose fills with tons of sweet barley and caramel aromas, with a hint of wood, banana, and strawberries.

i've had plenty of variations of old guardian and nothing comes close to how sweet this one is. so much barley and caramel malt flavor, but with a very sweet fruityness to it that makes it go down so easy! the abv is dangerously masked by all the sugary fruityness of this beer. i am getting a slight grapey feel towards the finish, but it is very subtle.

full body with a low amount of carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. this is definitely a treat and i am very grateful to have gotten to try this one. as far as all the variants i've had (belgo, oak smoked, different years.. etc) this is the best version of old guardian to hit my mouth.
