Inspired by new experimental German hops, our brewing team is celebrating our 17th Jahrestag by taking palates on an unconventional tour of Deutschland by way of Southern California. In doing so, we used a grain bill comprised exclusively of pilsner malts and German hops with crazy awesome names: Herkules, Hersbrucker, Magnum, Merkur, Opal, Smaragd & Strisselspalt. Dry-hopping with Sterling, a U.S. hop with Saaz parentage, lends a bit of familiarity, but be forewarned, this is a unique beer that takes the IPA–a style we've already pushed far beyond it's previous limits over the years–to interesting new territory.

Appearance-Straw to golden to orange center with an off white foam out of the bottle.

Smell-Round and ripe red fruit and cream with grassy hops.

Taste-Scorched grass with burned fruit.

Mouthfeel-Big. Heavy.

Overall-This is probably the lightest Stone I have ever had. That's a good thing. I know I'm probably commiting some sort of beer heresy by saying I want to see something with finesse come out of the folks down there but I'm going to do it anyway. Don't get me wrong, every once in a while I want my palate scorched, but every once in a while I like variety and seeing something different from a brewer.

This was one of the more unique hoppy offerings, all German hops, the land of well, not very pungent hops. Can they pull it off? In short, yes. Has the typical orange color of a crystal malted ipa, good 3/4" white head. Looks sharp. Aroma is dry hopped, but this isn't a dry hopping you're used to. Nothing like it really. Dat hop bill? Grassy, lemon, earthy.

Taste, again, a unique hop bill brings this to a different position. A little bit of grapefruit, lemon, dust, wheat, barley, caramel, wood, pepper and brass to it. Grass and grapefruit just keep pounding away on the mouth feel. Interesting beer, unique. Might pick up a 4 or 6 pack if they ever bottled it in those superior formats to the bomber this came in.

Pours an almost clear deep gold or pale amber producing 2+ fingers of slightly off-white, lasting, pillowy, finely bubbled head of foam that leaves a sticky coating of chunky lace. Aroma is floral & soapy, grapefruit, pineapple, some resinous pine & grass hops mixed with sweet caramel & biscuit malt in background hints of honey, vanilla & tropical fruits. Taste is bitter citrus pith & zest, pine resin, tangerine, floral, caramel & burnt sugar, tannins, pepper, honey, boozy, dandelion green bitterness, butter, vanilla pound cake, faint cedar wood & phenolic. Finishes sweet but the aftertaste is heavily bitter, lemon pledge, onion, black pepper, floral, boozy & metallic. Booze manifested as bitterness, spice & warmth. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy with medium-heavy carbonation, creamy but oily, slightly chewy, astringent.

This double IPA pours a somewhat dark golden color, with a medium foamy white head. The smell is distinctly IPA hoppy, with pretty heavy citrus notes as well as a peppery scent. The taste is definitely hop heavy, but it’s not all typical IPA. It’s pretty bitter, with flavors of grapefruit, orange, and a little pine, but it also has a pretty sweet almost cake-like flavor, which I’ve never seen in an IPA before. The finish is peppery and crisp, with not too much lingering alcohol flavor considering it’s 9.5%. It has a medium body with malts that are there to impart a mild bready flavor, which definitely takes a back seat to the hops. It would be a pretty standard IPA if it weren’t for that somewhat intense sweetness. Some IPA purists will probably call this blasphemy, but I actually kind of like the sweetness as it provides a nice contrast to the bitterness.

Not much more to say on this one, one smooth double IPA. Buttery, velvety texture and taste. Malt comes through, not covered by, but in concert with the hops. Very well done indeed.

From tasting notes. L: S: Smells like a fresh mown lawn and a pine tree. T: A moderate malt bbackbone supports yeast driven fruit and a big grapefruit and grapefruit rind hop bitterness. F: Medium to medium full body, medium to medium high carbonation. Soft palate. O: A big, exeptional IPA.
