Consumed at Stone Bistro Liberty Station (where it is brewed and is currently available nowhere else) on September 7th, 2013.

One shade of brown lighter than absolute black, this beer comes in a tulip with a one-finger foamy tan head that provides plenty of sheeting and leaves lots of lacing behind.

Aroma is very hoppy: herbal/earthy with burnt notes. Coffee, cocoa, dark roasted malt.

Flavor begins with a roasted nut flavor with cocoa. Intensely hoppy, almost peppery note follows. A lingering (like, for days) bitter coffee finish appears at the end of every sip.

Slightly thick mouthfeel, some carbonation bite, ever-so-slightly dry.

This really ought to be a "real" Stone beer on a regular basis and widely available.

750mL growler poured into a snifter. Thanks for sharing Chris!

(A)- Pours pitch black in color. A solid head of tan froth. Solid retention.

(S)- A solid mellow roasted quality. Some coffee and cocoa. Some subtle grassy citrus at the end.

(T)- Quite similar to the smell actually. A good roasted body with some cocoa and coffee but met with some dry grassy citrus on the finish from the high hop addition this must have had.

(M)- A good carbonation level. Quite dry overall, but some good roasted bits. Hoppy, but restrained, even for a Stone beer.

(O)- Definitely interesting. A very dry but hoppy stout.

On tap at the Stone Company Store in Pasadena, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, char, and slight soy sauce aromas. Taste is much the same with roasted malt, cocoa, and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with solid roast and char aspects all around.

Serving type: on tap.

October 25th, 2013 - To cap our tasting session at Stone's Liberty Station colony, we enjoyed a serving of the Cimmerian Portal. This is perhaps my favorite beer of their's by name, tapping into nerd culture in a clever way, and giving a good idea of the depth and power they want to advertise for this brew. The aroma is not especially abyssal or apocalyptic, showing off a regular stout smell, with the usual mild assortment of malt, soy sauce, a touch of oats, and others. And the flavor was pretty mild mannered too, with a smooth nitro-esque palate and an elegant finish. The flavors taper off quickly and crisply, leaving a nice, dry note behind. It's not as distinct as most Stone beers, and lacks that Stone quality or character, but it's still fine drinking.
