Notes: Collaboration with 10 Barrel Breweing Co. and Blue Jacket Brewing

When Meagan Parisi and Stone brewmaster Mitch Steele decided to collaborate, it was essential that they tap a special individual to complete their triad of fermentation domination, and they found just that in Tonya Cornett, the brewmaster at Bend, Oregon's 10 Barrel Brewing Company. Together, they decided on a sturdy yet velvety base of imperial porter and developed a plan to celebrate the bounty of the environs in which it was produced by harvesting avocado honey, jasmine and calendula flowers (some from our very own Stone Farms) and infusing them into the beer to create something complex and uniquely Southern Californian. Consider it craft cross-pollination at its finest.

22oz bottle poured into a two big snifters. Bottled on 09/13/13 (thank you for having relatively clear and legible dating, Stone).

Pours dark brown, but not opaque. Small head that dissipates quickly. Relatively still, but a little agitation releases a little fine, slow, carbonation. Smell is pretty. Flowery, sweet, roasty, coffee, chocolate.

Taste is floral (maybe calendula flowers? I don't know what they're like), sweet, maybe some detectable honey flavor. More roastiness, not so much chocolate, still a little coffee.

Mouthfeel is silky and nice. Overall, this is a quite nice porter.

OnTap at Stone San Diego Airport, waiting for a red eye to Boston.

A- Dark mostly black body with the tiniest bit of dark brown around the edges in light. Creamy light tan head forms to one finger with nice retention in a tall chalice. Frothy ring leaves nice rings of lace where each sip stops.

S- Smooth chocolate roast malts and toasted brown grains lend toffee, caramel, roast and some coffee cocoa notes. Mostly malts here for me with just a bit of spice and flowers on the end.

T- Matches the aroma but there is much more going on here from the added adjuncts. The base stays deeply roasted with cocoa and coffee notes and toasted malty notes of toffee, caramel and cereal grains. Jasmine and honey are noticed and the calendula seems to be here strong with a flavor I can't quite identify, must be calendula. Just like an herbal flower.

MF- Moderately thick bodied with a nice chewy creamy texture. Carbonation on the medium-high side and smooth thanks to the body. Finishes with some floral and roast bitterness.

Glad to see beers like this available next to my terminal, fresh and draft, also the same prices I'd pay in MA bars. Good porter base and flavorful adjuncts.

Dark brown with berry red hues. Nice mocha head that dissipates quickly. Thin lacing.

Nose is powerful fruity florals (i can smell the florals from several inches away), sticky sweet honey notes over more traditional chocolate malts of Imperial Porter. The nose is the most prominent and striking part of this beer.

Porter flavors more dominant here. Malty chocolates. Some tang and spice from the Calendulas. Slightly bitter. A little flat on the back end. It just sort of dies. Though I may have poured this a tad cool. Chocolate and roasted malts emerging as beer cools.

Mouthfeel is pretty light on the tongue. Medium carbonation. Slight alcohol burn.

I'm on the fence with this one. I think this collab brew is very interesting, but it's just not entirely working for me. The nose is very interesting, but the taste leaves a bit to be desired.

Poured into CCB pint glass from 22oz bomber.

Pours a dark black with 1 1/2 finger medium tan head. In glass there is no light penetration. definitely inviting for a stout guy like myself

Smells sweet with slight hints of jasmine. Dark malt smell followed by chocolate notes.

Definitely taste floral from the calendula and Jasmine. Second I get the chocolate and malt flavors. everything followed up by a little bit of bitterness from the hops.

medium thickness, carbonation seems like it is a little more than necessary it seems like it kind of blocks the tongue from getting some of the flavors.

I do enjoy this beer the floral tastes are different from other stouts and I think that's what sets it apart from others. If you have a chance to try it I would but I don't think this is something to go crazy looking for.

22 oz. bottle, with bottled on date 09/13/2013 printed on the bottle. Exponentially stoked to have this beer; it sounds delicious based on it's ingredients.

Poured into an over-sized wine glass, per the death of my snifter.

A - Pours a dark mahogany brown colored body with just a bit of ruby light passing through the glass. Two fingers of fluffy tan head that falls to a thick ring quickly. Lots of thin scattered lacing on the glass. Looks pretty nice.

S - Smell isn't exactly leaping out of the glass, but what is there is nice. Authentic honey, cola, some chocolate, malt roast, some cream, and light florals from the calendula flowers seeping out in the background.

T - Taste is definitely unique and different. Some bittersweet chocolate, dark malt roast, and lots of bitter, earthy, vegetal floral flavors on the finish, lingering long and hard. Sweet and creamy, but not getting much honey or jasmine in the flavor. Hints of cocoa and coffee beans, and even some fruitiness like overripe pear.

M - Feel is smooth and creamy. Aftertaste is sticky, sugary, bitter, and dry. Medium bodied with low carbonation, and no alcohol presence at a high 9.60% abv.

Overall, I thought it was a strange beer, but definitely one worth trying. Although, I'm not sure if I would want this again. I think I would prefer to have the Stone / Farking / Wheaton w00tstout again over this beer. Worth seeking out though, if it is available to you.
