Collaboration with 10 Barrel Breweing Co. and Blue Jacket Brewing

When Meagan Parisi and Stone brewmaster Mitch Steele decided to collaborate, it was essential that they tap a special individual to complete their triad of fermentation domination, and they found just that in Tonya Cornett, the brewmaster at Bend, Oregon's 10 Barrel Brewing Company. Together, they decided on a sturdy yet velvety base of imperial porter and developed a plan to celebrate the bounty of the environs in which it was produced by harvesting avocado honey, jasmine and calendula flowers (some from our very own Stone Farms) and infusing them into the beer to create something complex and uniquely Southern Californian. Consider it craft cross-pollination at its finest.

Shared bottle at hotel room tasting. Black colour. Weird aroma and flavour of flowers, but interesting. Also notes of liquorice. Might well sample again.

Consumed November 2015.

Pours black and dark brown with 1/2" lighter brown head. The aroma was different than most porters. You have all that jasmine flower bullshit dicking up the roasted malt.

Taste offered up the usual chocolate malt, roasted and toasted feels. The flowers give it a little bit of dryness moreso than anything smooth and suede if you will. Mouth feel was nice, it did keep the roasty bitterness in check. The flowery aspect and honey helped distract from the alcohol. They pushed a higher carbonation than expected. Notes of coffee from the roasted malt and a weird red wine and tree bark like note.

I think the disappointing thing about this is that its namesake "Suede" makes you think of smoothness, and it didn't really play out that way. The alcohol was big, the body was a little thinner than something approaching double digit abv, and the bitterness was higher than the name would make you think. Didn't hate it, didn't love it.

Bottled on 9/13/13; drank 9/28/14 @ the Yarchives.

Brown/black hue.

Dark tan head; strong lace.

Fresh earth, mild honey & mild perfume nose.

Thick mouthfeel.

Mild flavors of milk chocolate, honey & perfume up front; oatmeal, cake batter & booze heat emerge as this warms.

Muted & not overly pleasant a year in; perhaps this was more vibrant fresh. Not great.

The honey comes through big, but a big sweetness takes over. Very little to known bitterness. I get very little chocolate, and little coffee. The candy sweetness is there, it's a honey, and caramel battle in the aroma and taste.

Dark mahogany body with an inch of dense beige foam atop. Aromas of honey, floral notes, perhaps brown sugar, a touch of wine, slight oxidation. Chocolate, malt, bread. Medium-thin body with soft carbonation. Pretty good.
