Received as an extra in a trade and shared with JLindros. 2017 vintage.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown almost black with a thin mocha head that fades to leave wisps and a thin halo. Decent legs.

S - Aromas of almost chocolate chipcookie dough with decent barrel notes. The rum is an almost spiced rum, which is unfortunate, decent bourbon, flashes of chocolate.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with more chocolate and barrel notes. The rum is very assertive and as little unpleasant, decent bourbon. The main issue is the fact that there is a TON of oxidation going!

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, little slick, alcohol is hidden but the body is light so everything comes across as light.

O - Overall this was a very underwhelming beer, the barrel notes are mediocre, but this is no where near the level that I have come to expect. Really disappointing.

THanks to rudzud, 2017
Pours a dark foamy bubbly head but super small, decent retention though, some lacing, very dark brown almost black colored beer, thick with decent legs

Nose lots of the base beer, rich dark malt, cocoa, baking spice, nougat, some fruity spiced rum, very light bourbon sweet candy, some vanilla barrel, cookie dough notes, little raisiny, fruit both malt derived and rum barrel, little burnt roasty,

Taste brings more dark malts, rich cocoa, baking spices and cookie dough notes, light vanilla barrel, dark chocolate and nougat, a little oxidation as well, mild roasty bitterness and spicy hop notes, some fruity spiced rum, more raisiny fruit from malts and barrel, bourbon is barely detectable, finishes a little dry, light alcohol, more cardboard oxidation notes, fruity rum

Mouth is med to fuller bod, not as thick and rich as I expected, medium to lower carb, medium alcohol

Overall not that great, base beer seems detracted, bourbon barrel is almost nonexistant, rum barrel is not that great, it seems a bit thin

A waxed 12oz bottle

It is a viscous, oily black pour with a dark brown head. It settles pretty quickly into a nice thick film.

The aroma is tobacco, charred barley, leather, sour fruit/tannins, wood, vanilla, and a cinnamon like spice.

There is a lot of barrel character. Some alcohol is noticeable. Both bourbon and rum. Mostly bourbon with oak and corn grains among the dark sour fruits, bitter chocolate, and ashy charred malted barley. There is a brown sugar and vanilla like sweetness throughout that really lingers. Definitely a spiced rum aftertaste, with cinnamon and allspice.

The body is very full and silky/velvety smooth. A tad of alcohol burn.

A very good beer with a world class mouthfeel. My biggest knocks would be that it is a little too sweet overall with a bit too much booze

12 oz. bottle. Black body. A hint of a khaki head, but it's gone instantly. Smells of rum, oak, a little funky. Chocolate and some sharp-smelling dark fruits. Tastes really oaky. Sweet chocolate. Rum. Some bourbon behind it. Dry oakiness in the back end. Medium heavy and boozy. Getting better as it warms, though I'm still not all that impressed.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter
2015 Vintage

A- pours a deep black color with a small foamy khaki colored head that reduces to a ring around the edge of the glass

S- plenty of barrel influence in the aroma, both rum and bourbon are equally distinguishable. Also has a spicy cinnamon/nutmeg vibe going, almost like a pumpkin ale or cinnamon baked apples. Closes with dark fig & a bit of caramel

T- taste opens up with an epic battle of bourbon & rum, with neither really dominating more than the other. The mixture gives some notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, prunes, fig, woody oak, molasses, hints of vanilla & brown sugar.

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a bit of a boozy finish

O- I love Pt5, also love Bourbon Pt5, but the bourbon/rum mixture makes this beer all over the place. There's probably a reason you never see those two combined until in recent beer experiments

wow! this is nice! 2014 vintage from BEST DAMN BEER STORE shipped from San Diego. super smooth. nice and sweet alcohol notes without any bite. if there's gonna be a 5, then this is gonna get it. for aroma and flavor at least. the pour is beautiful, if uneventful, but the smell when the cap released (after some massive and thick dark red wax) was beautiful.... this is a very nice pleasure.....

12 ounce bottle into snifter; 2015 vintage bottling. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark brown head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, cinnamon, nutmeg, spiced rum, light smoke, and roast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with greart balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon/rum barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, cinnamon, nutmeg, spiced rum, light smoke, and roast/oaky earthiness. Light-moderate roast bitterness and bourbon/rum/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, dark bread, dark fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, bourbon, rum, and roast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon/rum barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and rum/bourbon spiciness balance, with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from roast bitter/oak spiciness as well. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Barrel aged imperial stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon/rum barrel flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. The rum barrel adds some nice unique fruity/spicy complexity; while still having a nice balance with the regular bourbon barrel notes. A highly enjoyable offering.

2014 vintage

Black in color. Tan head.

Has a wine like flavor. Tannins, okay. Bourbon and rum show. The spices are there. Lots of chocolate. Roasted malts. Thick feel.

I don't like this because of the spices and tannins.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle poured into a Founder's CBS snifter. 2015 edition with no bottled on date, but likely 3.5 months old at this point.

A: Pours a quiet, pitch black. Subtle dark brown head around the edges.

S: Some allspice, cinnamon, bourbon, oak, cocoa, vanilla, nutmeg. Rum barrels add a nice extra layer here.

T: Spice, vanilla, nutmeg, oak, whiskey, prune juice, cranberry, dark fruits.

M: On the thinner side. Decent carbonation. ABV hidden well.

O: Pleasantly surprised by this one. Not a huge fan of regular BBPt5, and didn't hear too many rave reviews on this variant, but this is really good. I almost prefer it to the regular version, as the rum barrels and a nice, spicy, complex layer to it. They even pull out more cocoa and oak notes on the nose as well. It's almost like a autumnal-spiced or Fall-seasonal BBPt5. Great balance, nice mouthfeel, tons of flavor. Another big winner from the guys at Dark Horse.

Recommendation: A 4Elf exclusive, but worth the trade or travels if you really like BBPt5.

This is inconsistent. I've had 2 bottles, 2014 vintage, one moderate sour and not great; another just beautiful, rum scented, sweet and creamy. How to rate this?

Potentially great but buyer beware?

12 oz spit with 4 people

poured dark with minimal head
Lots of roast, coffee and bourbon with a hint of rum spice on the nose
Smooth with fine carb and a medium to full body for the style

Overall a real surprise, and the rum was blended extremely well into the bourbon such that it complimented and didn't contrast. Very tasty.

12oz bottle of the 2015 vintage, dark blue wax. Served in a snifter glass.

Pours a dark black body, one finger mocha head. Good retention, not much lacing as expected. Smells of chocolate, a heavy roast just like from the base beer, a mild rum sweetness, a low-key bourbon presence. Not a ton of bourbon but it seems like a fairly nuanced beer just from the aroma. Flavour is similarly nuanced, not objectionable in any way. Nice roast, milk chocolate, cocoa, a bit of smoky bourbon, mellow but sweet rum. It's all there, and thankfully not too much of each. Mouthfeel is full bodied, a bit creamy, lower in carbonated than expected, fair amount of barrel on the finish. Overall, this is a well-done double barreled stout with a good complexity to it. It helps that the base beer is an excellent one.

Deceiveded to crack this I a whim and broke my vertical/horizontal, really enjoyed it. Noticed some where infect after looking over reviews, must be isolated as this one was perfect. Very good bourbon and rum, but not as good as the bba version.

Delicious nonetheless!

After enjoying the base stout and bourbon only version I was hoping this would be worth the wait. Looks the part, super dark with a thin amount of khaki head. Smells of barrel, more rum than bourbon... sweet chocolate as well. Taste is more rum forward and im okay with that. The feel was above average on thickness and had good carb. Enjoyed this one.

At first glance it looked great. Super dark a lil more head than expected but it had all the typical looks of a ba stout just a lil thin coming out the bottle. But one whif and I knew it was all bad. Smelled funky and tart. Semi metallic. Taste oh yeah she's infected. Tasted like tart Apple penny's. A lil funky but overall not something I could finish. Poured this one. Super disappointed. I traded for this one. And even shared with two other we all were bumbed!!!

L - Rich looking stout with nice legs with a swirl

S - The bourbon and rum mixture was quite off putting

T - Tasted like a mediocre pumpkin beer. The bourbon and rum did not meld well. Maybe something was off with the bottle.

F - Solid on the mouth, not super thick but not thin

O - Very underwhelming.

Pour is black with tight caramel head. Nose is heavy bourbon with some sweeter tangy rum notes. Malts are a bit subdued, chocolate cake and a bit of dry bakers chocolate. Taste is heavily boozed, rum a bit stronger, still a fair bit of bourbon. Malt richness is more prevalent than the nose. Not as clean as regular bbpt5. Gets a little boozy through the finish. Body is fuller, thins slightly in the finish. Moderate carb and fairly dry.

EBF sample. Pours very dark with a dark brown head. Aroma is very barrel dominated. I thought it was interesting that I could pick out nuances from the bourbon and rum barrel. Roasted and burnt maltiness. Coffee and various oak scents. The flavor is strong. Good bourbon flavor and a nifty rum-spice addition. Bitter chocolate, some char and black coffee. Finishes with dry oak remnants. Full, creamy body. An enjoyable brew but I think I like the just bourbon aged Plead The Fifth more.

Super dark in color, smells of slight alcohol from the rum but some vanilla and dark fruits as well. Very easy to tell by the taste this was in both rum and bourbon, based on the two main flavors that "fight" each other to win me over. Not sure where infection tasting notes are coming in but I got none of that. Carb and feel is great. Overall I think this is a fun brew, a bit too much booze initially and not quite as good as the BBA version.

12oz bottle from latest release.

Black, opaque elixir, poured into Hoppin' Frog snifter. One finger mocha head with steady 2mm float as tasting proceeds. Thick lacing in huge clumps.

Such a nice aroma of apples, pears, rum,and oak. Subtle caramel and spice round out this special brew.

There is a nice combination of flavors which really make this a fantastic beer: tart fruit, barrel, dark fruits, roasted malt and chocolate. Wow!

Heavy feel, alcohol hidden, nicely carbonated.

This is really a one of a kind beer. The ingredients combine to create a wonderful amalgam of flavors. Well done Dark Horse!

Having had this side by side with the regular barrel aged version, I preferred the previous incarnation of this beer.

The beer offers the bourbon barrel aged beer's smooth vanilla and fudgey chocolate notes, but also with a kick of spicy dark fruit from the rum. However, there is also an umami or oxidized flavor that comes through in the middle, whereas the other version lacks this.

Very well done and decently similar to the Bourbon Barrel version, but not quite there.

This is basically Rum Barrel Aged Plead the 5th. I really thought this was a great beer if you aren't expecting the same thing as BB Plead the 5th.

The rum adds a great smoothness to the beer and drinks very easy. I am glad I got as much as I got at 4 elf.

It's a really good stout, rum comes through a great deal. Pretty boozy, lots of chocolate & warmth. But this is NO WHERE CLOSE to regular Bourbon Plead. Not by a nautical mile.
