Rod is a refreshing, medium bodied red ale brewed with aphrodisiac herbs for woman and men alike. Brewer Russ Beattie was working on his own version of Sex Panther, using passion flower, epimedium, damiana, and ginko to elevate the levels of spring time friskiness and brewmaster Aaron Morse decided that the best way to spread the love was via Rod.

On-tap at Ye Olde Saloon in Royal Oak.
What a fine, fine beer... something about it. I know a lot in this style can taste similar, but I get a sort of almost coffee flavor from the malt that I really dig and it gives this beer excellent drinkability. Not bitter at all, and super smooth at 7.1% ABV. Nice surprisingly clean flavor coming from this one. I'm not sure that Dark Horse bottles this, but they ought to, and to make it year-round. One of the better I've had in the style... refreshing to have an amber that's not hopped to high hell. Props, Dark Horse.

On tap in a pint glass at the brewpub on 7/21/12
A) Pours a dark, rusty/crimson brown; dense appearance. One half finger head thins to a soapy layer. Some drippy lace.
S) The aroma has strong notes of floral hops, sweet bread and caramel. Milder hop overtones of citrus and pine. Full, resinous aroma. Smells pretty good.
T) While exhibiting a balance in the aroma, the taste has much more focus on the hops here there is a showing of pine and citric pepperings. Toasted bread and caramel; somehow this beer manages to stay rather dry.
M) Medium-plus feel; it is resinous and oily. Puffy, rolling carbonation.
D) Overall, ROD is maltier than I prefer. That said, it has full flavor and is not lacking in feel. I appreciate that in the style.
