Pitch black body capped by a one finger cappuccino colored head. The head slowly works its way back leaving a thick sheet of lacing blanketing the walls of the glass.

Heavy chocolate and booze upfront in the nose. Molasses and slight roast fall in just behind. Subtle hints of java are buried beneath. Pleasant aroma but not overly complex.

The flavor follows along the same path in which the nose started down. Heavy chocolate dominates the front of the palate. Molasses and a bit of roast develop underneath. A slight brewers licorice flavor appears on the back of the palate. There is a definite overall sweetness with this beer, the sweetness does lean towards the darker side.

Full bodied stout but lacks viscosity. The creamy nearly frothy texture does help and make up for this. The flavor lays heavy on the tongue making for a long finish.

In a state which does not take their Imperial Stouts lightly Dark Horse holds it own. I do not find it quite as enjoyable as Bell's and Founders offerings but Plead the Fifth is far better than the majority of the RIS's out there. Very drinkable for such a big beer. The booze does make its presence known but does not become obstructive. Definitely one worth seeking out.

A - Kind of a small head that doesn't retain too long. Yet, still appealing in appearance.

S - Notes of chocolate and espresso.

T - This beer has a very unique taste and feel in that it has the "bigness" of a barrel-aged stout, without the burn. I keep waiting for it to come, because of the boldness of flavors and abv, but it never comes. which is ok. It gives you a slightly different experience. The taste is superb.

M - Full bodied, creamy, substantial.

O - A superb beer that doesn't disappoint. I liked my second one (days later) than my first. Maybe I pulled it from the fridge too soon on the first because I couldn't wait.

Like many other reviewers, I did not feel this beer lives up to the hype. For the money, Founders RIS is better. Poured from a 12oz bottle chilled into a brandy snifter. Pours a deep black with barely a finger of tan head from an aggressive pour. Head dissipated quickly. No oily residue on top. Smells of dark bitter chocolate, hops, and dark fruits. Little to no coffee smell. Taste is much thinner in the mouth than I would have preferred with hardly any coffee or espresso finish. Dark roasted malts, toffee, bitter dark chocolate and hops. No vanilla. Dark fruits like raisins or plums/prunes. Hoppy and slightly bitter after taste. This is not my preferred RIS. It's very good but not great.

A - Pours a dark, engine oil black with a toffee colored head the quickly dies off to leave a a nice toffee colored lacing, sticky with legs as it clings to the glass.

A - Dark roasted chocolate/cocoa, black anise, light oak, and light smoke.

T - Dark roasted chocolate, coffee, some oak character, light smokey char, anise/licorice, and light sweetness that finishes with a char/dark chocolate roast bitterness.

M - Thick, full bodied, viscous, velvety on the tongue, sticky on the lips.

O - A very well brewed stout and every bit as worthy.

Thanks to stxSS07 for the extra!

A- Pitch black pour, frothy mocha colored head with some foamy lacing.

S- Roasty charred malt, hints of coffee and cocoa. Almost a coffee creamer aroma is present too.

T- Big, rich roasty malt flavors. Cocoa, hints of coffee, still getting a lactose-like taste. Almost like a sugarless brownie with a hint of char. Very tasty and big on flavor.

M- A huge, smooth, creamy, full-bodied stout. Medium-low carbonation, a smooth sipper.

O- A great imperial stout. Nothing that strays from the norm, but extremely well done.
