Bottle: Date unknown. Big thanks to Marti403.

Appearance: Black as death with a creamy, tan 1/2 finger head that has some staying power.

Smell: Delicious, deep, rich chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, brown sugar. WOW!

Taste: Matches the nose so well and tastes just as I hoped it would! Pretty much has everything from the nose with a little booze in the back, which is expected of a 12% beer, but it's not harsh. This is one of the best stouts I've ever had.

Mouthfeel: So creamy, so smooth. Not quite in BCBS territory of viscosity, but it's thick, yet so drinkable. Velvety, for sure.

Overall: What can I say, got this as an extra and it's blown me away. Can't find much wrong with this aside from the booziness at the end, but I'll bet that can be fixed with a year in the cellar. So damn good, and my first Dark Horse brew. Look forward to many more after this!

Awesome extra from stxSS07! 12oz bottle into a Stone IRS glass.

A: Inky black beer with about a finger worth of frothy tan head that recedes to practically nothing. Completely opaque. No lacing to speak of. This is a damn dark beer. Some mung on the bottom of the glass.

S: Molasses, brown sugar, roasted barley, and a fair amount of booze. Roasted barley and a bit of coffee as well. Dark fruits, plums, and just a hint of earth in there as well.

T: Chocolate and a fair amount of coffee and burnt malts, some caramel, decent amount of hops in here which pair nicely with the bitter burnt malts. Finish is bitter and resinous hops dominate the long finish. Brown sugar and molasses are mixed in with a lot of chocolate. Not bad at all.

M: Very heavy, viscous body, with light creamy carbonation. Sticky on the lips, and fairly warming on the finish. Warms the whole way down, without really being hot. Very nice here.

O: A nice stout that I would love to have on hand regularly in the winter time. Tons of great flavors and a nice amount of complexity without ever being overwhelming. Nicely done!

Had from a bottle, poured into tulip glass.

L - oh yeah, dark and dark, with a dark brown head.

S - chocolate, anise and licorice root. Standard stout stuff on steroids.

T - A gulp of malty goodness, dry bakers chocolate, coffee and a hint of dark fruit on the tail.

F- Nailed it, dark, chewy and amazingly thick.

O - a ballin stout, but not perfect. A bit of complexity and some creaminess would make it perfect.I think the dry vibe is fairly unique as imperial stouts tend to skew sweet for better or worse. I can't wait to try the oak aged version.

Very comparable to Stone RIS, at least to my taste buds.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- Pours incredibly black. As dark as they come. Almost not head. More of a brown film. Impressive alcohol legs.

S- A lighter roast. A big coffee presence, A subtle caramel. A dark brew.

T- A light roastyness up front. Really goes well with the caramel. A smooth creamyness, almost a desert style stout.. Sugary but not too sweet. Some roasted toffee an burnt sugar.A decent hop presence but still very subtle. A touch of chocolate on the back end. A well balanced and rounded RIS.

M- A solid Feel to the beer. A sticky, roasty sweetness. Alcohol is extremely well hidden. Drinks like a champ.

O- This is a great RIS. Up there with Stone's IRS and ten fidy. I would love the BA version.

12oz 2010 bottling into Leffe chalice. Thanks for the glass, Ding. Enjoyed at room temperature.

Head fizzes out but beer is a healthy robust brown. Nose is chocolaty and a bit of dark fruit, some serious alcohol too. Taste has big velvet chocolate flavors, some pipe tobacco, pine resin hops and more dark fruit. Mild coffee. Very sweet, pretty hot. Still, it works. Mouthfeel is a bit hot but ultimately satisfying. This beer is stellar- a hefty, bold, no-nonsense RIS. One of Dark Horse's stronger beers. Would like to see this with some age on it.
