Inspired by West Coast I.P.A.'s, but brewed with Michigan style. The Crooked Tree is heavily dry hopped to give it a big aroma of pine and citrus. The flavors are big, yet very balanced between fresh hops and malt. Often described as "grapefruit" our hops give this beer an excellent fruit flavor that finishes dry.

CROOKED TREE IPA

Smell/Appearance: dark burnt orange/topaz with a hazy opacity. Poured with a two-three finger tightly laced head that stuck to the rims of the glass as it receded and left a mountain of foam in the center. Smells of strong citrus - could smell it as soon as a I cracked the bottle zesty lemon-citrus with almost no piney/earthiness as I might have expected.

Taste: Surprising considering the smell and appearance. Medium-low carbonation, less than which I think is ideal. Although I didn't initially take note of strong malts in the nose, I thought the caramel flavors were a little overwhelming and imbalanced. Very bready and sweet powerful caramels undermine those delicious hops I smelled.

Drinkability: Overall I think this is a pretty sessionable beer. Wasn't truly impressed by the flavor at the outset, but it's gotten a lot better as it warmed. Appearance-wise the lacing is pretty incredible - there's still some at the top of the glass! Whereas I would have given this a C initially, its stock has risen a whole lot since; B+.

Beautiful pour, lots of floaties in this unfiltered beer. Cloudy, thick amber body capped by a nice creamy off white head. Lots of sediment in the bottle, wish I noted the "unfiltered" sooner so I could have saved a bit at the bottom for a final swirl. Still squarely in the East Coast IPA family, mildly bitter, but also fairly malty. Tastes, great, looks great, finishes well.

12oz can
it’s been years since I’ve seen this one anywhere around here
L: slightly hazed amber body; persistent, foamy, beige head slowly fades
S: caramel malt, grain, pine, citrus
T: just as good as I remember; old school IPA flavors: caramel, bread crust, and grain malt backbones met with pungent earthy pine, zesty grapefruit & orange, along with a slight herbalness
F: resinous & sticky bitterness, moderate carbonation, pungently bitter with pine lingering on the dry finish
O: better than I remember it being!

Unfiltered hazy amber color. Minimal head ringing the glass, but lacing the glass nicely. No grapefruit taste as some have implied, but hint of citrus on the nose. Bitter with a clean finish.

The pour is a dark & murky orange. On the aroma i'm picking up some tangy citrus, slight malt bill, & some slight herbal & tea notes as well. The taste follows the nose along with some piney bitterness that shows itself more towards the finish. Cheers! B
