Very Good
Crooked Tree IPACrooked Tree IPA
Notes: Inspired by West Coast I.P.A.'s, but brewed with Michigan style. The Crooked Tree is heavily dry hopped to give it a big aroma of pine and citrus. The flavors are big, yet very balanced between fresh hops and malt. Often described as "grapefruit" our hops give this beer an excellent fruit flavor that finishes dry.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a copper color and a cloudy consistency. There was an inch and a half of foamy, very long-lasting head. Great lacing.

S: A decent aroma of hops, a lot of malt, and some citrus.

T: Tasted of a fair amount of hops, more sweet malt than most IPAs, some citrus (grapefruit, especially), and a hint of caramel. There's a grassy quality to the hops that kind of throws the flavor off balance (that and a slight metallic quality), but it's pretty good nonetheless.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a very smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is a somewhat old-fashioned IPA, but it has its god qualities. Drinkable.

Energetic yellow pour, some haze, unfiltered, drops 1/3" white head. Aroma was big time bitterness. Grapefruit. Less tree, crooked or otherwise.

Taste was old school 90s recipe bitterness and grapefruit. Stayed away from heavier malts, but has a tendency to come across coppery bitter.

I guess I've been spoiled over the years by Dark Horse's better hoppy beers. This one was good.

L - pours a turbid tan brown with a shitload of yeast.

S - caramel malts, some sweet hops. Tropical.

T - nice hoppy bite! Hits with the hops up front and doesn't let up. Malty with grapefruit acidity and dryness.

F - leaves a minor tingle on the tongue. Jumpy and zesty. Refreshing!

O - Dark Horse is a legendary brewery and while this isn't anything to blow your load over, it is a solid IPA.

Wasn't sure anything could top my love for the Mad Hatter IPA, but this was fantastic. Thicker mouthfeel, unfiltered lends a different look- gorgeous, rich ambery color, grapefruit and honey-like notes. Hopped yet balanced.

Admittedly - drinking a beer of this supposedly quality depends on the site - and I would rate the quality of the hardware here with a C - fair. The aroma, and the head were a tad below expectations and likely related. The clarity and color were spot on for what I would have expected and I thought the beer was well balanced with a nice hop profile.

BOD 01/11/16. Pours a medium amber that is quite hazy and has a tremendous amount of suspended matter in addition to precipitates. This beer is unfiltered, so this is not a flaw. Outstanding head volume, world class lacing and quite outstanding retention.

Outstanding, but a rather light, nose of floral and mild citrus over biscuit and caramel.

Light body with a smoothness that is slightly more than that of water. World class carbonation with a nice effervescent middle and a finely bubbled prickly finish. The light body and strong carbonation really make the flavors pop.

The flavor profile is very good. It begins with a blended hop flavor (floral, light citrus) that never separates. The middle brings a moderate rind and earthy bitterness over a not quite balancing sweetness that barely allows caramel detection. The finish is somewhat dry and an orange rind bitterness lingers.

FWIW, this is my first review. I like an IPA with some body and a nice finish and this is one of my favorites. Decent hop beginning but not overpowering, and more body than most so it turns malty and a little sweet in the middle before the hops kick in again at end. This leaves a nice sweet hoppy finish. It's only the second time I've had this beer. The first time was on tap and this one came from a bottle. It's as good as I remember it.

This is an extremely drinkable, almost session, IPA for someone being introduced to the style and not ready to be punched in the mouth with hops. (Deschutes "Freshed Squeezed" is another good one like that). For the seasoned IPA drinker it's a smooth one you can knock back a few of, while still drinking something interesting.

L: Pours an orange/Amber with a slight head.

S: Predominantly caramel malt with citrus notes. Slight honey scent with small grassy note.

T: Follows the nose, with good mix of caramel malt, citrus, and grassy hops.

F: Thick and well-carbonated. Great feel.

O: Solid beer. It reminds me of an amber-IPA hybrid with the strong caramel malt and happy citrus hops. I would drink this beer again!

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange color.

Overall: Crooked Tree is heavily dry hopped which gives it a big aroma of pine and citrus. Taste is well balanced bittersweet, lot of tropical fruit juices, mango, tangerine, passion fruit. Very good IPA that has won several medals.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a murky golden orange color with a medium sized white head. The aroma is big on hops and citrus. The flavor is hop goodness with a nice malt blend. An outstanding IPA.

Wow, this was an unsuspectingly great IPA. Here goes:

A: Nice but cloudy amber-orange. Pours a huge head and leaves great lacing. Good.

S: Also good. Lots of herbs, grass, and some tropical fruit interspersed with caramel malt. Fruits include grapefruit, lemon, oranges, apricot, and mango. Overall, this is a very grassy and tropically IPA mixed it with some malt characteristics.

T: Follows the nose, which is good. Grassy hops and fruit flavors on top of a great caramel malt backbone. Overall, I really liked this beer. I would have it again in a heartbeat.

F: Very thick and well-carbonated. Great.

O: This is an excellent beer. Lots of tropical fruit on a caramel malt backbone, Outstanding.

Pours a rich amber gold color with a soapy white head. Smells of citrus , hops, and subtle fruit. Expected more citrus from the smell, but upfront there is a funky bitter taste, followed by a bitter hop finish. Feels like most IPA's. Overall a drinkable beer.

an absolute outstanding IPA. I was a bit hesitant after trying the double crooked tree IPA, but was pleasantly surprised by the overall drinkability of the beer. Very balanced taste with the right amount of hops. I will definitely purchase again.

Pours a very, very cloudy orange, visible sediment. Nose is herbal, earthy with light citrus. Taste is mostly malt, with a strong herbal taste. The feel is fine for an IPA, but I suspect this was a self turd. I'll need to revisit with a fresher bottle.

Poured into a stem glass. Bottle date unknown.

Cloudy dark-ish amber, almost copper, with a finger of off white head that dissipates into a thin beige ring that leaves lacing.
Smells of black tea and pear, mild grapefruit and tangerine, perhaps faint tropical notes, and malt. It's probably an old bottle. It's a pleasant smell, but very muted.
Mostly malty, but still tasty. Sweet but not overly sweet notes of caramel, toffee, and toast, and some mild hop notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, and mango. There's still a nice bite of piney citrus bitterness on the finish to balance out the sweetness.
Nice mouthfeel, though. Thick and smooth, the fuller side of medium, with ample carbonation.

In its prime, this is probably a very good beer. However, I don't know the bottling date, and this tastes like it's probably past its prime. However, this tastes better old better than some I've had. I'll say that its decent, but I'll reserve judgment until I can find it when I know its fresh.

Picked up a sixer from Opperman's Cork 'n' Ale in Saginaw last weekend for$10.99. No bottling date visible. Enjoying it while sitting on my porch looking at the Tullymore golf course.

Beer poured an unfiltered orange with a beautiful white head that has some serious hang time.

Nose is a nice mild citrus.

Taste is grapefruit and orange that slightly overpowers the pale and caramel malts. I like that there is not an overpowering amount of residual hops left on the palate

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty refreshing.

Overall this is a smackable beer that an IPA lover will enjoy!

Bottled from TJs Grosse Pointe, MI. Bottled July 31st 3015. Pours cloudy amber. Was hoping for a solid punch of hops but didn't get it. The hops are more subdued and mingle harmoniously with the light caramel malts. Not super memorable, but a very commendable IPA out of Marshall, MI.

Strong floral hops. Amber in color and a breezy, carmel taste. Very nice aroma of fruits Much fuller than expected and goes down so easy.

It is simple and not overpowering but just about perfect. This is a world class beer and I keep it in stock both here at at our home in Northern Michigan. Dark horse is a brewery I would like to visit for sure. They have some great IPA style brews.

Picked up a bottle of this while I was in Michigan for work. No date on the bottle, but based off of the other reviews, I feel like this could have been a pretty old bottle.

Average appearance, smell, and taste. Little bit of citrus. Very malty with lots of bread characteristics. Nothing special or exciting about this beer.

Murky Amber body with some sediment left in it. Sticky, soapy off-white head sits on top. Aroma is an even balance of pine and citrus with a strong biscuity malt aroma. Flavor is pretty similar, pine comes through first, balanced out by the biscuity malts, then some lemony citrus towards the end. Feel is somewhat prickly with a lingering bitterness. This one appears to lean more towards a balanced IPA, with lots of malt character. It is okay, but nothing I would look for.

12oz bottle brought here in a suitcase by my in-laws from Chicago. Date is 4/21/15. Poured the whole thing into my tulip glass, and the tail end of it was murky.

Looks, consequently, murky, amber-gray, with a medium head and plenty of carbonation. Smell is very muted. Like, I can barely smell it. Tiny amount of floral.

Taste is (thankfully) more pronounced. A little lemon tartness, a little lemon rind bitterness, a bit of pine bitterness, a bit of vague malty sweetness.

Mouthfeel is a little chewy, fluffy, nice. Overall, not a knock-your-socks-off beer, but a good solid beer.

Quite effervescent after pouring from 12oz. bottle. Nice lacing after the head deflated. Hazy copper color that is darker than expected.

Strong floral hops. Slight caramel notes and tart fruit.

Strong bitterness greets you at first sip (but not very high on the IBU scale). After the bitterness fades, sweet malt and caramel flavors come through at the end. Citrusy notes creep up and, upon fading, finishes slightly dry

Great mouthfeel. Fuller than expected and pleasing to the tongue. Light – Medium.

I really liked this IPA and my first sample from Dark Horse. I saw this in a Michigan Meijers store on vacation and gave it a try.
