Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly known as Dark Horse Amber Ale

While the malt and hops give this beer an amazing copper color, medium body, and a smooth mouth feel; it’s the yeast that sets this one apart from other amber ales. Inspired by Belgium's beer, women and mussels we thought it would be cool to give our Amber a little Belgian touch. We accomplish this by using an "almost Belgian" yeast strain producing similar esters and flavors commonly found in more traditional Belgian beers.

Rich clear amber color with a light tan head. Fruity esters on the nose, plus some resiny hop notes and caramalt.

The taste has the resiny hop flavors up front, followed closely by the esters from the Belgian yeast and the caramalt. This didn’t rate particularly well, but I’m really enjoying this from another Michigan brewery that I live.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a clear deep amber color with a one-finger creamy khaki colored head that has decent retention

S- peppery spicy belgian yeast gives some phenolic notes, as well as clove and banana. Undertones of caramel malt

T- bargain yeast follows the nose, but not as prevalent. Notes of spicy, peppery yeast, as well as clove and some phenolic notes. The finish gives light caramel malt and lingers of more peppery yeast

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish

O- solid belgian pale with good drinkability

Hazy dark orange color with a bit of light beige foam. Aroma has toasted/nutty malt, brown sugar and some orange rind. Taste follows with the nutty malt and slightly astringent orange zest. Medium body with medium minus carbonation. Not bad but it's quite one-noted and dull.

A cloudy, straw colored amber; not my favorite. All I get is a little caramel aroma. Not that bad in taste, but hard to identify; more like a Tripel than an Amber. Fruity, but what fruit? Goes down pretty well, maybe a tiny bit thin. Despite all the negativity this is not a bad beer. It actually works if you remember it is not strictly an Amber.

Pours a clear copper color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of strong Belgian yeast, clove, sweet malt, slight alcohol, and slight nutmeg. Does not fit the style of a Belgian Pale Ale, but as it states it is not trying to do that as a Brown. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong Belgian yeast, clove, sweet malt, hint of dough, slight caramel malt, hint of spicy hops, slight alcohol, and slight nutmeg. Overall, good appearance, the slight hoppiness cuts the spice and malt quite well.

Cloudy amber with no visible carbonation, topped with 4 fingers of muddy beige head.

Smells of bananas, cloves, Belgian phenols and caramel.

Tastes like bananas and cloves, caramel and deep notes of toffee, as well as a solid toasted amber bitterness. A combination of an American style amber ale and a Belgian white beer, or German weizen.

Medium body, almost chewy, with moderate to low carbonation.

Got this in Kunming at a local beer cafe, drinking it in Chiang Mai, June 3rd, 2017. Surprised at the ingenuity, and it works. Excited to find a lesser distributed beer from MI in Asia!

Pours cloudy Amber. Thick, short, off Whitehead that Fades fast.

Smells malt, East Funk, cloves, banana, hints of hops and brown sugar.

Tastes bready malt, banana, cloves, yeast Funk fading quickly to grassy hop flavor and a flicker of Amber ale. Dry finish with light grassy linger. Medium body and creamy medium carbonation. More Belgian in taste than Amber ale.

I am finding all sorts of beers in The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, some of which are curiosities. Take this one, for instance. It is listed as a "Dubbel", but the brewery's website states: "While the malt and hops give this beer an amazing copper color, medium body, and a smooth mouth feel; it’s the yeast that sets this one apart from other amber ales. Inspired by Belgium's beer, women and mussels we thought it would be cool to give our Amber a little Belgian touch. We accomplish this by using an 'almost Belgian' yeast strain producing similar esters and flavors commonly found in more traditional Belgian beers." None of that suggests "Dubbel" & so I have recommended a change to "Belgian Pale Ale", which is how I am reviewing it.

I Pop!ped the cap & performed a gentle pour since I could not remember when I procured this particular bottle. I gave it an in-glass swirl to raise a brief finger of soapy, tawny head that quickly fell back to wisps. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was interesting in that it had a bready, malty sweetness, but the yeast was giving it a fruitiness of light banana and mixed berries. Mmmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was more towards dried dark fruits, like raisins and prunes, but with that breadiness that I noted on the nose. I just do not think that it qualifies as a "Dubbel". Finish was semi-sweet, proof of the power of the yeast strain being utilized. It could have been very malty sweet, but the yeast's action imparted just enough dryness to keep it pleasant. I am probably satiated by one, but it was an interesting beer.

One of the worst ambers I've ever had maybe it was just served improperly but it tasted like a Belgian triple that had been left out in the sun for about a month and than scuttled back into a keg so I could suffer. Even for a Belgian this beer is lacking the fact that it stradles between both Belgian and ambers and is astonishingly underwhelming on both fronts is even more dissapointing. I'm ashamed for Dark Horse that they even claim this awful bag of dicks.

One of many beers I brought in Whole Foods on my recent trip to NYC & packed in my back to add to my home collection. Pours a cloudy amber colour with a white head. Aromas of fruit, bread & malt. Tastes of sweet dried fruit, coriander, caramel, bread, toffee and hints of mild spicy yeast. Medium body & medium carbonation. Finish is a sweet fruity mildly bitter end. A reasonable effort of the style
