L: Jet black color, quarter finger brown head, ok lacing, no visible carbonationn

S: Chocolate, coffee. Smells wonderful. Could sniff this all day long.

T: Chocolate, roasted coffee, raisins. Tastes nice.

F: Surprisingly light bodied but mouthfeel is ok.

O: Good beer but wish mouthfeel was more dense. That would make it great.

12 oz bottle with minimal sediment on the bottom. Pours near black with a thin , weak head.

Very appealing aroma with a flavor to match, almost. Both have exceptional balance. Remarkably well hidden alcohol, although it is evident in the flavor where it makes a positive contribution. Strong roasted grain aftertaste.

Very smooth, full body.

Overall: Nothing exotic here; just an admirably tasty and well-crafted oatmeal stout.

LOOK: Thick oily Dark black, small tan head.
AROMA: roasty, smokey malt. Very aromatic
TASTE: smoke, peat, coffee, toast, tobacco. A perfectly bitter finish, not too much, just enough to bring the flavor.
Feel: thick, smooth, a little creamy.

This is a very good oatmeal stout. Probably the best I've had, although Samuel Smith is always the sentimental benchmark.

Last four pack in a hole-in-the-wall place in Sioux Falls, SD.

Pours a glistening brown color, forming a dark chocolate body and a walnut colored head of 2 fingers (snifter). 1/4 finger remains after letting it settle a few moments. 100% opacity.

Some pretty rough smells out front -- a touch of manure, some dirt, a bit of copper piping. Past that as it's inhaled further and agitated, a nice peanut butter cookie aroma comes out. Following that is molasses and antiseptic.

The flavor is not bad, if a touch metallic. It has a cola like quality to it, with dashes of cocoa and oatmeal here and there. Still, the metallic quality permeates and continues to shout louder than the other good qualities, I have to dock it a bit. Flavors of brown sugar and molasses faintly finish out the profile in breaths.

Feel is very carbonated, very cola-like, but still manages to keep a medium bodied creaminess about it. The finish is purely dry, acidic, and chapped. Pretty nice ending.

Overall, I have to say - this is one of Dark Horse's weaker offerings. Now that I've had their basic five stout lineup - (and believe me, it took me awhile to acquire them all) I have to say the Oatmeal Stout comes in last. #4 would be Tres Blueberry (too sweet and smuckers-like as it warms), #3 is Too Cream, #2 is Fore Smoked, and #1 of course is the mighty Plead the 5th. Comparing this Oatmeal stout to something like Anderson Valley is a huge let down. I feel they could go back to the drawing board on this one and filter out the metallic dross that surfaces in the finished product.

(Second time through was better, scores adjusted accordingly)
