This was one of the surprises that showed up at the "The Scraps" event at TJs this weekend.

The beer is garnet as it cascades out of the tap and tumbles into the glass. As the level of the beer builds, the color moves to an almost opaque dark brown, but there are still amber ruby-ish hues around the edges. As I drink, drippy lacing forms in inconsistent vertical lines. Nothing diagonal or horizontal here.

The aroma and flavor are both awesome. The bouquet starts with chocolate and natural maple syrupy sweetness. It moves on to include vanilla and oak as well, along with a light roasty malt character, highlighting the base porter, but also building on its foundation. The flavor follows pretty much along the same lines, but in addition to the components in the aroma, I find toffee, caramel, and a hint of warm alcohol.

The texture is medium in consistency with a spot-on level of carbonation. This brings everything that I would want from a porter. Shake Maple Porter is balanced, nuanced, and complex. This is a must-try if you get the opportunity.

An above average effort. Lucky to walk in on this one since the Winter series of stouts are gone.

Deep brown chocolate color with a quarter inch of head. Very inviting! Smells faintly of coffee. Not as strong of coffee or chocolate as I would enjoy.

Initial taste is very good; strong chocolate, not watery at all. Only issue is flavor fades fast. Other Michigan porters I prefer have more legs than this. Overall flavor is good but I don't mind tasting the alcohol bite and this did not. My wife likes Porters more and would probably like this better.

If the Shake Maple is supposed to give a mellow flavor, it was not that noticeable. Really more of a faint sweetness. But I would definitely order again.

Had on tap at the brewery. Most of this is going into bourbon barrels. Can't wait for that.

A: Pours black with two good fingers of brown head.

S: Aroma is of dark roasted malt, maple syrup and a hint of coffee.

T: Sweet to start followed by nice roasted malt moving into maple syrup. This has a unique woodiness from the maple. The finish is bitter coffee and mild hops.

M: Medium-thick body with good carbonation.

O: Somewhat sweet but a wonderful sweetness from the maple syrup. This should be great after the barrel treatment.
