This beer is made with milk sugar (lactose) which gives this beer a nice creamy mouth feel which mingles with hints of chocolate and roasty flavors.

So I only have a couple more left in the holiday stout series and I wanted something dark to have with dinner last night and decided to take this one for a ride. The nice 12oz bottle was served at cellar temperature and poured into a pint glass.

Appearance - What a wonderful looking stout we have here. This one poured a pitch black with no light escaping at all,

This thing looked like an abyss. Pitch black, I could not even find any light sneaking in around the sides at all. A nice huge looking tan head then rose up over the top to a height of around two inches before finally settling down to a thin chocolate pillow across the top, but not before depositing copious amounts of side glass lace throughout the session,

Smell - The aroma was very large, and nice and sweet. Tons of lactose aromas coming through on this one. Sweet mil chocolate and a good touch of sugar all over this. Some nice dark roasted malts were hanging out way in the back, but otherwise this was just very sweet, delicious smelling to be honest.

Taste - The flavor followed suit nicely. The first thing I noticed was a nice roasted malt taste that was quickly erased by sweet milk sugar. Lots of vanilla hints rolling through here as well, with a nice chocolate like flavor as well. The finish had a touch of dry hoppiness to it, but other then hat it finished the way it started and came off very nice,

Mouthfeel - Nice smooth, creamy feel, not as heavy as I would have liked, but still very well done, and a testament to how well this one was put together. Really again very well done.

Drinkability - I could have easily had this one all night long. The carbonation was done very well and the overall feel of it was nice, albeit a touch on the light side. There was a decent amount of sugar, and the alcohol was nowhere to be found. I easily could have had another one at any point.

Overall I thought this was a n excellent representation of the style and one of the better sweet stouts I have had. Rich in complexity and low in BV, it is the perfect session able stout for the evening. I would be happy t have this one again any day!

Another old review from a trade extra back in 2014.

Black pour, brown to the edge and on top head formation wise, thin 1/4" in size. Aroma was milk chocolate, whoppers.

Taste imparted more lactose sweetness than the nose did. Kept a milder milk chocolate side. Alcohol was there, but not to persecution levels. Still seemed a little bigger than style guidelines. An imperial milk stout doesn't make sense. Fractional lil smoke note which is nice. Not really a lot of roasted malt note heft, seems the smoothness they were striving for was hit, outside of the abv. Almost undercarbonated, which is pretty hard to do for style, but takes on a slight flat soda aspect with it. Its good, but I wouldn't say its as good as Plead the Fifth. One too and three all pretty much come close to each other despite being different stouts with different adjuncts. Seen these for good prices in Wisconsin, so I imagine I'll pick up another 4 pack someday.

From old, undated notes. Poured from the bottle.
Black/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small dark khaki head which quickly dissipated; minimal lace.

Banana, burnt caramel & sweet cream notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Banana & fresh earth flavors up front; burnt caramel notes on the finish. Cream notes emerged as this warmed.

Robust for a sweet stout. Enjoyable.

Dear God, I have finally reached the miserable end of this Dark Horse 12-pack...

Out of four different Dark Horse offerings, I saved this for last thinking I would like it the best - and I was right. Unfortunately, that really doesn't say much when the entire pack of offerings was less than desirable. This particular one was the "best" in the bunch - great looking stout, even though it didn't have much of a head or lacing. The smell was decent, a distant creamy flavor on the nose, and the mouthfeel was light on carbonation, like I like it. But the taste, well, it was meh, simply meh. This by far was the worst experience I've had with a 12-pack from any brewer. I'm sure these guys making something good, right? In any event, I'll be on the lookout for it moving forward.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into stout glass. It pours almost jet black with a thin, creamy mocha-colored head and lacing. Its nose features roasted malt, nuts, licorice, tobacco smoke, and some faint dark fruit. The first taste is burnt malt, followed by caramel, bakers chocolate, nuts, tobacco smoke, char, and some bitter hops at the finish. The feel is rather thin for a 7.5% stout. Overall, it's pleasant enough but not something I would seek out.

Pours with a dark black with a minimal head that disappears quickly. Aroma is vanilla and fruit. Taste is sweet chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Good mouth feel. A hint of bitterness at the end.

From the growler via Jungle Jim's in Fairfield. This mighty fine stout pours a
deep and muddy blackish brown with a thin cola highlight and a nice layer
of tan foam that subsides to a thick ring and light pooling layer with nice
lacing. Nose of rich dark java, sweet cream, bitter dark cocoa, and char notes.
Flavors follow the nose with car laden bitter roasted coffee, rich dark bakers chocolate,
and a sweet cream note with hints of toffee. Very nice mouth feel; full body, light
carbonation, and a sweet char laden finish.

A favorite of mine during the winter months, although I am convinced it would make
for a fine summer sipper. An excellent stout from an excellent brewery.

Cheers

An expresso and chocolate aroma when opened and poured. A deep dark color. The taste was quiet excellent, much better than expected. The taste of coffee and chocolate lingered on the palate, which was quite pleasing. The feeling was quite good as well. A nice stout that would be worth having again.
