Very Good
Notes: The Boffo Brown ale is a beer that we brewed years ago and then put it in semi retirement for a couple years while we focused on other brands at the brewery. We have recently put it back onto active duty and are brewing it all year. The beer itself is delicious and is a favorite to many of us here at the brewery. Just as most of our beers it's on the "full body" scale pushing the envelope of what an American Brown Ale is to most people. The beer is a very deep/dark color of brown with a nice creamy tan head. The mouthfeel of the beer is very soft and is very drinkable. Flavors of malt, caramel, toffee, and a mild earthy nutty finish allow this beer to be paired with hearty food and sips of bourbon.

I could have sworn I had this one before but I guess I must have skipped the review. Generally a fan of what Dark Horse does and Browns have been high on my charts lately.

A- 12oz bottle poured into a teku with a deep woody brown body that has some inevitable red round the very edges. Thick, frothy head rises up to over a finger with good retention. Large belt around edges deposits webs of lacing.

S- Straight up Brown malts without leaning too far towards roast or sweet; although both are certainly present. Raisin bread, caramelized sugars, cocoa hints with toasted nuttiness present throughout.

T- Toasted grains, caramelized sugars and nuttiness are the dominant factors in the flavor profile. Yeast brings a bit of dark dried fruits like raisin and fig as well as a bready character. Fairly bitter toast feel, some cocoa and moderately sweet overall.

MF- Medium bodied overall with a slightly creamy and frothy consistency. Medium carbonation level as well as some oily feel. Finishes with toasty dark fruit bitterness.

Smooth for 7% ABV with a balanced profile of nutty, toasted and sweet malt notes. Hints of roast and sweetness but nothing really interrupts the Brown aspects of this one.

BOD 12/19/15. Dark brown cola like pour. Slightly below normal head volume, normal lacing and retention.

Outstanding rich nose of nuts, molasses, light roast char and a hint of dark chocolate.

Light medium body with a smooth texture with a few creamy hints and aspects. Superb carbonation with a fairly effervescent middle and a nice finely bubbled prickly finish.

The flavor profile is quite good and rather flavorful for a brown ale. The flavors of the nose all appear with a nutty molasses serving as the base. It begins with a wave of light roast char that hints at chocolate. The middle brings a low bitterness that fades allowing a light sweetness to emerge. Here is where chocolate makes its strongest showing over a growing toasted grain influence. The finish has a hint of dryness and a slow fade of nutty charred grain.

A: Deep dark brown, 2” tan tinted white lacy foam collar that leaves thick lace.
S: Toffee, anise, toasted grains.
T: Toffee, dark malts, no harsh roast or burnt flavors, some cola, starts sweet and malty but not super sweet, more like a hint then it dries out for a long finish seasoned by a moderate hop bitterness.
M: finely bubbled, luscious creamy rich. Medium to medium light body but the superfine carbonation and the super creamy texture give it a much bigger presence.
O: A nicely done English style brown ale.

Boffo. Sounds like a weird uncle that lives in a trailer in the forest.

Appearance (4) : Pours a muddy brown hue with some cranberry peeking through, an opacity of about 80% - i.e. shadows of my fingers on the other side if I study hard enough. The head is a creamy, pillowy build about 2 fingers high and levels off at around 1.

Aroma (3.75) : Wet autumn leaves after being raked, bagged, and rained on; charred notes with charcoal and baked bean. Slight chocolate peeking through towards the end of the nose. In fact, the more the head recedes, the more the chocolate is apparent. Bouquet is around medium strength.

Taste (3.75) : Bitter notes come out with hints of dark chocolate, wrapped up in a roasty body and a fire kilned char finish. Smoke is left lingering on the tongue with a razzing buzz. Some coffee notes also remain as breaths are taken inside the mouth.

Mouthfeel (3.5) : Creamy, cozy, warm. The slight buzz in the body keeps it interesting and holds the flavor up which otherwise might sink into soggy bean land. It's interesting and plain at the same time.

Overall (3.72) : This brown ale drinks more like a roasted porter than anything. It's not a bad thing - it's just mislabeled. It's not your typical brown ale, but what it brings the the table is a good mixture of char, smoke, dark chocolate, and kiln. It's great for a one-off, but I doubt I'll be drinking this anytime soon.

Sincerely,

T-A-J

Strong aroma has overtone of burnt brown sugar and a hint of caramel. Pours an opaque dark-chocolate brown with a thick, creamy fine-bubbled pale tan head. Lip-smacking flavor is malty with tones of caramel and molasses and just a hint of fruit. Texture is pleasingly smooth with a nice subtle tingle. Worth hunting down!

Poured from the bottle a dark, dark brown with light brown highlights below two fingers of tan head. Generous lacing all around.

Aroma of sweet caramel malts, brown sugar, tobacco and ripe orchard fruits.

Tastes of sweet caramel malts, tangy ripe fruit and candy sugar.

Light-to-medium bodied and a bit dry with moderate carbonation.

Delicious. One of my favorite Browns.

This is a regular brown ale as far as I know, but somehow is tastes barrel aged, and in a very good way.

The nose has a medium maltiness to it, some bread and a little sweetness, but there are also hints of wood and bourbon. This continues into the flavor but with more intensity. This beer is a wonderful, medium caramel, malty drink with huge bourbon and oak notes and a touch of vanilla. It is possibly the best brown ale I have ever had.

A: chocolate, mahogany, mostly clear. Nice smooth tan looking head, finger width.
S: all kinds of roasted malts and bready notes. Perhaps some nutiness as well. I believe there is some floral hop aroma as well.
T: very nice roasted malt flavor with some toasted notes and carmel overtones. Impressed with the bit of citrus that peaks through and prevents from being a malt bomb. Nicely balanced.
M: medium bodied, slightly creamy. Nice malty after taste. Really coats the pallet.
O: very nice brown ale here. Great flavor, great drinkability.
