Bought a 6-pack $5.99 Don Quijote
Smell of chocolate roasted malts
Medium-low carbonation
Dark black color
Medium mouthfeel
Smooth, creamy, light roasted malt flavors
Overall pretty good for the cheap price. It's not craft beer level, but for a macro brew type its good.

Another bottle bites the dust in today's attempt to eradicate single-O Porters, Stouts & Old Ales from the insidious Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody. This one came to me courtesy of my local, in-person trader, tone77. Many thanks!

From the bottle: "Since 1933"; "From German Dark Roasted Malt".

Grrr. A twisted-up, twist-off cap! I really dislike those things as it deprives me of even the satisfaction of a Pop! I hate bottles & this would be one of the few saving graces to one. You had better believe that I upended the bottle & spanked it like the guy in the recent commercial with his lunch! I got two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, light-tan head for my efforts. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with NE-quality clarity & garnet highlights. Nose was roasty & smoky, but with a caramel-like sweetness. I would have to agree that, despite its labeling, it is not a Stout. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, nothing of note, but at least it was not watery. The taste had a slight sourness to accompany the caramel & smoky flavors noted on the nose. It just seemed to be all over the map with no clear-cut destination. Finish was semi-dry, but I was having a tough time nailing down its style - Lager or Ale; Schwartzbier or Stout? This was an oddball that I will leave in my rearview mirror.

To start off this is not a stout - it's a black lager (aka swarzbier - translates directly it's "black beer") so don't get fooled by the name. Pours like a stout, smells like an amber, tastes like Hite lager with cold toasted coffee added. Surprisingly refreshing and light for a "dark beer". An interesting beer but nothing to race out and buy. I picked this up at the local Korean market just for kicks. I wouldn't buy it again.

Pours a thin head on a black body.
The aroma is roasted malt, simple and one-sided but not bad.
The taste is roasted malt with some lemon bitterness to round it out.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
It drinks more like a dark lager than a stout. Not bad.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, dark breads. Taste is malts, grains, some bread, a hint of sweetness. Feels medium/light bodied in the mouth and overall is easy drinking and a decent beer.

Dark brown with a tan head.

Smells very lager like, and fairly light.

Tastes a bit thin with loss of caramel and brown sugar.

Mouthfeel is fairly thin, carbonation is moderate.

Overall, a fairly bland brew. Tastes like it was made quickly and in a big batch.

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours a very dark brown, appearing nearly black in the glass with a one finger tan head with decent retention and lacing. Faint aroma of toasted malt, coffee; with a slight sourness. Flavor is better than the aroma, but very attenuated. Faint dark toasted malt, hints of coffee and chocolate. Finishes very light with memories of dark malt. Light bodied, but decent carbonation. An odd little beer, for a brief moment after tasting, all the right elements of an English stout are present, although subdued, but flavor fades away to a very light finish. This tastes like a high production English stout that has been slightly watered down. It has potential if the pleasant flavors present would be more intense and with a bit more body. I suspect this would still be a locally welcome beer compared to many of the very light Asian beers. Worth a try and drinkable, but most other stouts would be a better choice. I would rate this higher compared strictly to other beers from this continent, but it is labelled as a stout and has to stand up in that company.

This beer is an interesting test of how we BAs rate beers. Are we judges at a competition, grading beers in terms of their adherence to a specified style? If so, this beer grades poorly, because despite the name on the bottle, it really does not seem to be a stout. (In fact, one Korean website calls it a dark lager, which makes more sense to me.)

But if you didn't have a preconception about the style of a beer, and just judged it on its own terms, well, I think this beer is a bit better than the scores it's getting here. If you're looking for a darkish lager, this is a reasonably well done tasty beer. No, it doesn't have the creamy mouthfeel, or the intensity of a good stout. But it's a pleasant beer, and better than some other dark lagers out there. Appearance is attractive, the aroma is fine, and the taste is pretty good. I enjoyed it, and I'd have another (although I wouldn't go out of my way to find it).

A: Dark wood stain brown with slight ruby tinge, semi transparent, half a finger of tan beige head, lots of carbonation when held to bright light.

S: Coffee, floral, soda pop, reminds me of Blue Diamond’s Stout. Smells like a pop not a beer. A sort of rancid smoker’s breath mixed in. Animal offal.

T: Surpasses the smell. Its more like a dark toasted malt, some burnt toast, then the floral, smokers breath and pop like qualities come through but not as strong as on the nose.

M: Medium somewhat bready somewhat syrupy body, medium fine carbonation.

O: A bummer, but slightly better than a lot of Asian beers. The only reason to take it would be if you are in Asia and have few choices. Generally weak, but some nice stout qualities still there.

Color- black coffee. Slight head.

Aroma- Very roasty malt with hint of coffee.

Taste- A light stout with definite coffee and roasted malt tones finishing clean with a hint of over-toasted bread. I agree with other reviewers that the light body of this brew is more lager-like than stout. But it's an drinkable brew from Hite from South Korea.

Poured from 355 ml (12 ounce) bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted on 1/25/2013. Purchased at Super H Mart (a Korean market) in Dallas.

Poured into a Nonic pint.

Look : Chestnut colored body, 70% opaque, 2 finger cream colored head. It looks more like a brown ale at this point, but the head does leave some respectable lace when it recedes to a thin cap.

Smell : Dirty, like the streets of Korea. Lots of dry barley, with burns of alcohol, and faint molasses. Ultimately it smells like a dark, grainy lager with a touch of molasses.

Taste : Dry, charred barley, a hint of smoked corn, ending with a tight snap of licorice and a large presence of dry rubbing alcohol.

Feel : Thin, thin, thin. Moderately carbonated, ends snappy. The combination of feel and taste makes this essentially a Schwarzbier.

Overall : Did these guys think they were brewing a stout and instead concoct a Schwarzbier recipe? On the bottle it says "from German Dark Roasted Malt". Perhaps they got the two styles mixed up? As a Schwarzbier/Black Lager this beer isn't bad at all...but when you're expecting a stout....major fail.

out of all the local macro-brews in korea this was probalby one of the best ones that i have had, but that is not saying much.

pours a dark brown with a small off white head that dissaptes rapidly, some lacing.

smell is faint, malt, some caramel, and a touch of cocoa.

taste is watery, malt, some cocoa, and slightly bitter.

355ml can poured into a pint glass.

Almost black in color with two fingers frothy tan head, the head’s retention is pretty good with some quality of lace along the way down before falling into small layer atop. Some visible carbonation can also be seen.

Roasted malt and buttery diacetyl is here and there with a trait of hop and yeast that cling together. Only subtle coffee could be found while there is no hint of chocolate at all.

A bit light in taste, mainly sour from roasted, hop and grain character, a little bit sweet by malt as well as slight bitterness from hop gradually add in. Still there is no significant coffee or chocolate here.

Medium body with semi-smooth mouthfeel, dry with moderate carbonation.

Light, dry and easy to drink, there is a sign of roasted malt quality but still lack some in-depth character comparing to average in same style.
