22oz bomber, no date. The label alludes to Old Man's Cave and the Cantwell Cliff's, and other sights found amid the Hocking Hills--as well as claiming that this beer is "not just for breakfast anymore." It pours a slightly hazy pale gold color. The white head receds quickly, leaving no lace.

The smell is very yeasty, with traces of banana and spice. The flavor follows, plenty of corriander in there, and a spike of anise on the, otherwise strong banana, finish that I don't find all that pleasant.

The body is medium, somewhat lush and creamy, lacking a little carbonation however. It's very drinkable, but lacks the complexity to warrant really justify repeat visits. I'm not the biggest afficianado of Hefeweizen, but this is far from the best I've happened upon. I'd like to always support the brewers in the OH, but I can't really give this brew the bigg-upps that would like to.

22 oz bottle decanted into a large weissen glass reveals a shimmering hazed goldenrod body topped by a billowing white head. Nice patchy lacing is left on the glass as the head slowly subsides.

Pleasant hefe aroma of lemon, unripe banana, clove, white pepper, and malted wheat.

Light medium body with an ideal lively carbonation.

Taste is crisp and enjoyable, reflecting the aroma nicely. Banana, lemon, pepper, clove, and malted wheat with a touch of yeastiness.

Very well done!

Bomber bottle, w/o freshness nor bottling info offered. I rolled this one on the counter to release the accumulation of yeasty goodness residing on the bottom of the bottle. Pours medium apricot amber and very cloudy. Quickly departing head, morphs down to a thin film and leaves minor lacing. Nose is super floral and with a sweet/sugary note. Bananas, cloves, yeasty goodness, you know the deal. lacking a bit of depth, mouthfeel wise in the mid section. Medium flavor hefe, certaintly worth a try, but lacks the depth of flavor and complexity of the all stars of the style.

served into a tall wheat glass from a 22oz. brown bottle crimp-on cap.

Hazy, straw yellow with a white, pillowy head thick and retentive, large chunks of yeast afloat.Very lively looking, many strings of tightly wound bubbles racing to the top of the glass.

A very clovie aroma,yeasty/fruity very clean smelling,a pleasing aroma of bannana bread.

Tastes of clove,a nice fruity presense,sweet/breaddy,very clean a bit tart, very refreshing.

A light,airy mouthfeel,very drinkable a very good Heffe.

My bottle says 4.6% abv appears a cloudy banana sunset golden tone with big yeasty particles a float...large off white cream tinted head is produced in my conical shaped glass what's left behind is even rings of lacing with each sip I take. Aroma is filled with banana, mild citrus, and vanilla with clove accents from the funky authentic German hefeweizen yeast...smells damn good. Taste has a creamy frothy banana smoothy goodness to it, I'm sold this is a damn good American brewed hefe more light citrus, clove, and vanilla with a spicy finish and mild herbal soothing sensation in the finish. Mouthfeel is spritzy with fine carbonation light to medium bodied coats the palate and finishes slightly dry. Drinkability is good I could enjoy quite a few of these and I would like to.

20oz. imperial pint served at the Dilly Deli. Review from notes.

A: Plae golden, great clouding. Good head, retention, and lacing.

S: Sweet tasting with bubblegum. A bit of banana and clove. You know.

T/M: Taste is much the same. There's a bit more sweetness than the nose suggests. Yeast is a bit spicer and adds depth to the banana and clove. Body is medium light with lively carbonation.

D: Very tasty and extremely sessionable. 4% :D

Barrel House's hefeweizen pours a cloudy, brass body with an orange cast beneath a massive head of white foam that very slowly settles to a thin lid, leaving thick splashes of lace behind.

Sweet wheat malt, some tart lemony citrus, clove, plasticy/smokey phenolics, and a bit of earthiness greet you in the nose.... and the flavor is even fuller!

It's lush, softly sweet, fruity, very round and surprisingly complex. There's a hint of smokiness to it that's reminiscent of a rauchbier... mmmm, bacon! And the malt flavor is full, where as in some weizens it just acts as a springboard for the yeastiness. It starts wheaty and then displays a myriad of flavors including a delicate apricot-fruitiness, some spiciness, apple, pear, a candyish phenolic, dull banana... there's even a touch of vanilla in the finish!

Quite engaging, very charming, and drinkable. An excellent hefeweizen in the traditional Bavarian style. Well done. Highly recommended!

Another interesting note, and I only bring it up because I've never seen it before, is the way they label their beers. On the left hand side there's a scale that indicates how malty or hoppy it is, and on the right how light or dark. I think that's great for the everyday consumer, and even I could use that for beers that defy style.

Appearance: It's a very hazy, golden color. You can see particles of yeast floating around. Head is about one finger and left a light coat of lace.

Smell: Very sweet, fruity smell. Mostly banana on the fruit side with a slight twist of lemon. It has a malty aroma to it. Hops are kind of light. Not much in that department here.

Taste: It's a bit sweet for me. Definitely can taste a strong banana taste. Slight hint of lemon. It also has a bit of a spicy taste. Not much of a hop bite.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's light bodied. Pretty drinkable on a hot day. Honestly, it's not really my style. Something about it's just kind of bland. Overall, it's not a bad beer. I wouldn't suggest rushing out to try it though.

Watered down orange juice color with a small head that does not last long. Very little lacing is left on the glass. One of the most lifeless hefeweizens I have seen. Typical hefe aromas of banana and cloves. A decent dose of the wheat malt as well. The flavor does not suit my tastes that well. Seems a touch sour with too much citrus acidity that to me, is out of place. A little orange juice and vanilla in the finish. Weird. Flavor seems more appropriate in a pale ale than a hefe. The body is a bit thin and undercarbonated. No wonder it looked lifeless. It is not undrinkable and it is certainly interesting. Not like any other hefeweizen I have come across. My bottle lists ABV at 4.6%.

Pours an opaque orange, lots of foam, very traditional. Three fingers of foam that slowly diminish. 22 oz. is a little too much for the weizen glass, make at least two pours.

Banana and clove are present, very pleasant, somewhat sweet. Mild bubblebum and funky wheat.

Tastes smooth and wheaty, clove and bubblegum are mildly expressed at first. Wheat again in the aftertaste. Very mellow caramel aftertaste. Mouthfeel is very even and smooth. If you are a Hefe fan, two would make a nice session.

Not a bad rendition of a Hefeweizen...

22 ounce bottle, no date that I could find on the bottle. Served in a weizen glass, the beer pours a cloudy golden/straw yellow with about an inch off-white head which lingered for a while. It smelled like citrus, grain and banana. It tastes like lemon, wheat/grain, cloves and bananas. The mouthfeel is on the watery side, but it is smooth and refreshing. It goes down pretty easy too, the drinkability isn't bad at all. Not too bad of a beer, I'm just glad the bottled Barrel House beers have made it up to the Columbus area. I could drink a couple bombers of these every once in a while.

From the tap pours a cloudy, hazy yellow/straw color with a thin foamy white head. The head disappeared quickly, and there was no lacing on the glass. Smells slightly lemony. Tastes slightly grainy, then followed by sourness and a lemony aftertaste. Light bodied, with a refreshing amount of carbonation. This is very drinkable. I found this to be a nice beer. This will come in handy during the hot summer months.

A pretty good job of hitting the German hefe style on the mark. Poured a slightly hazy wheat straw gold. Some moderate yeast flavors with banana and a touch of clove. Beer finished with a lemony tartness that some might find too sour, but I thought refreshing. The tartness brought with it a bit of astingency that brought the drinkability score down a notch, though. Overall, a nicely made beer.

Into my weizen glass...

A - Solid orange color with some visible carbonation. Smooth offwhite head reluctantly fades to a quarter inch. Thin sheets of lacing.

S - Pungent orangey citrusy sugary sweet fruity smell with some light earthy wheatiness. Hints of blueberries.

T/M - Starts out smooth, a light carbonation bite hits, accompanying sweet fruity flavors and earthy wheatiness with some light pepper.

D - Overall a pretty tasty hefe, and a very good value at $3 for a 22ozer.

Appears a hazy gold with CO2 seen rising to the top before the yeasty remnants are poured into the tall weizen glass. A small, creamy head slowly fades into a 1/4" cap that never leaves. Scattered spots of lacing are left around the sides.
Smell is of crisp wheat, lemony citrus, creamy vanilla custard, poached pairs, light banana, spice, and doughy yeast.
Taste is of the aromas with a fresh bread character, light fruit, and citrus.
The mouthfeel is super smooth, light-medium bodied with banana sweetness & vanilla, along with a clean yeast along the palate. Excellent carbonation along the tongue and roof of the mouth. This is an outstanding version of a Hefe brewed in the U.S. I happen to have another bottle, which I'll savor for the appropriate time.

On draft at the Dilly Deli.
Pours a hazy gold in color with a very nice two inches of head on the pour. Smell is huge amounts of clove and some underlying banana. Taste is even more of the clove. Almost too much. Very nice mouthfeel and decent flavor, once you get past the clove. Easy drinker.

Pours a darker golden yellow color almost as if some brownish lots of bubbles rising to a off white head. The head is not as large as most hefe's and doesn't leave gobs of lace as most hefe's. That being said is the only fault if you can call it a fault, in this American Hefe.

Aroma is nice big wheaty light citrus lemon apricot lightly tart mixed with banana and good earthy yeasts cloves pepper, the normal.

Taste is lighter in fruit then the aroma but good crsip wheat notes blend with lemon and other citrus upfront. Banana and good earthy yeast show up in the middle and linger thru out the finish. Finish is also good clove flavors light pepper and some light hop presence.

Mouthfeel is a decent medium good mellow carbonation for a hefe with peppy hints where needed.

Drinkability is good, a hell of a hefe from an American Brewer, many thanks to merlin48 for this fine treat.

This beer tastes almost ciderlike-- tangy, fruity, and a little sweet. There are no banana or clove phenols, the body is thin, and the aftertaste is a little sour. I'm not finding a date, so I don't know if it's fresh or not. I would not buy this beer again, but it seems like other people have had better experiences.

Full 4 oh's! This is a great hefe. Cloudy, golden with an inch of white head that lasted about 40% of the drink. Great effervescence which left a nice tingly feeling in my mouth. Not like champagne, mind you, but great. Citrus nose with a slight smell of spice. Orange and banana encased a small hint of hops. The finish was vanilla and malt not a lot of malt but just enough to end this beer great!

Bottle with many thanks to Phaleslu! Hazy straw, pours a very fizzy and quick lived white head, that leaves just a thin ring. Nose of clove, candy, some banana, bubblegum. Tastes immediately of sweet banana, cloves, thrills gum, peach. Medium bodied, a bit thin on the finish. Very sweet bubblegum aftertaste. Good. Thanks Peter!

Best damn hefeweizen I've had in America with the exception of the Hofbrau hefe in Newport, Kentucky. This is a perfect hefe with fruity overtones in the aroma, cloudy appearance from the lack of filtration, excellent taste of a thick hefe. Holy Esters! Not for the light weight beer drinker. I'm not sure of the alc % but it must be high and getting higher. Enjoy this if you can.

The hefeweizen style is far from my favorite, but I made special effort to judge it against the style without personal bias. It had a nice unfiltered appearance, floral citrusy nose, and crisp taste. The mouthfeel was appropriate for a hefe. It really didn't require any additional citrus, and overall a nice representation of the style, just not my bag.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with OhioDad (thanks!).

Poured a medium and slightly cloudy golden color with a smaller sized white head. Aromas on the softer side and consisted of wheat, banana, and spices. Tastes of wheat, spices (stronger than the aroma), banana, and lemons.

Poured a nice golden color with a sweet, fruity aroma. Didn't have much head, and the mouthfeel, although well bodied, was pretty flat. The taste was malty and sweet with hints of bananas. Overall a beer I could see enjoying on a hot summer day. Pretty tasty American hefeweizen.
