Pours very black and thick looking with a bronze colored head atop. The beer smells very roasty with notes of coffee included. The flavor is roasted and actually quite smokey. I don't notice the bourbon as much as I hoped I would, I actually find it pretty hard to pull out bourbon notes in the flavor here. Either way, it's an excellent stout.

A - Black pour, micro thin toffee lacing ring, no carbonation.

S - Caramel, roasted toffee, sweet roasted chocolate.

T - Dark chocolate, cherries (for a brief second), some oak, a little bit of bourbon, and an astringent off flavor that's hard to peg, but it's definitely there.

M - Nice velvety feel, viscous, sticky.

O - One dimensional and the weird astringent off flavor kinda kills this one for me. :o(

Coffee, bourbon, vanilla and stout? Yes please! The flavors that find ultimate favor with stout fans make their way into the patience, preserverence and passion of Maumee Bay brewers in this epic progression in taste.

Over its ominously dark tawny black appearance, a succulent yet emboldened scent of chocolate, bourbon and caramel exude. Onyx-like through its center, the edges bleed with black cherry hues as its head is compromised by the tannins and alcohol deep within. But once those succulent burnt sugars hit the tongue, it's game on...

Getting past the obvious sweet and surly chocolates and bourbon nuances, the acrid edges of roast has been smoothened by the barrels and the beer has taken on a sweeter and melded roast that hinges on creamy espresso and burnt toast slathered with nutella. Its candied walnut finish trends bitter as the premiere flavor of bourbon eventually steals the show.

Full and lightly oily, the beer's viscosity is aided by its relaxed carbonation to create a lush creaminess but also a lumbered weight. But as the malts begin to fade, the spice of bourbon charges in and claims the finish with its wood caramels, wood spice, prickling alcohol and soft vanilla. Light powdery texture claims a cocoa powder character as the stout eventually begins to dry.

12 ounce bottle, 2015 edition. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that fizzled away quickly. However, there is a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some oaky woodiness noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and smooth with moderate carbonation. I liked the regular Total Eclipse, and I think the barrel aged version is good too. Definitely worth picking up if you come across some, I know I wouldn't mind picking up another bottle or 2!

What a wonderful, rich stout! Only drawback is the price. Widely available all over Toledo at $6.99 per 12 ounce bottle. Maumee Bay's best product yet -- thanks, Clint!

Poured from an undated bottle (2015 vintage) into a snifter. Excellent head retention and lacing. Boozy smell - bourbony. Chocolatety and sweet. Slightly dry finish. Silky smooth and light body. Not thick like an oat stout. Overall really good and happy I took the risk on a four pack! Will have again...even if I didn't have more bottles I will keep an eye out for this.

I have heard this is infected. I'm not sure it's true. I believe the coffee probably just had a slight vinous quality to it giving the impression of infection. I don't think the beer benefited from this however and it kept my score low.

12 fl. oz. bottle
Served in a snifter

This beer pours black in color and is topped with a film of tan head that leaves no lacing.

The initial smell is roasted malt and alcohol. I don't really get any bourbon notes, and a lot of the aromas that I love in the base beer seem muted or missing.

The coffee seems to have transformed into more of a roasted malt flavor with a little coffee bitterness in the finish. I really have to search for the bourbon. I get hints of caramel from time to time. One again a lot of the element of Total Eclipse seem lost in the aging process.

Full, smooth mouthfeel

I have to say that I am a little disappointed. I absolutely love Total Eclipse. It is right there with Founders Breakfast Stout. I was hoping this would transcend to a KBS-like beer, but it is far from it. The coffee and chocolate flavors that I love so much in Total Eclipse are missing in this version. All that being said, this is not a terrible beer. I like it, but it disappoints given the quality of the base beer. It is still better than a lot of beer out there. I just built this beer up too much in my head. Maybe I sat on it too long, and it is my fault. I will try it again fresh if the opportunity arises.

2015 edition, 12oz glass poured into a snifter
A: Pitch black with a thin head that quickly settles
S: Cocoa, coffee, dark malts, a bit of funk & vanilla
T: Quite tasty, matches the nose with an emphasis on the cocoa, coffee and vanilla
M: Full-bodied, somewhat sweet and a light bitterness
O: Well-made, tasty. Doesn't overtly show bourbon but the barrel-aged qualities are evident. A solid stout on its own, enhanced by the barrel

2015 vintage. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Basically pours black with a khaki head that falls leaving nice retention and lacing. Looks great. The aromas aren't overwhelming, but are very nice. Nice balance between bourbon and chocolate. Hints of caramel and vanilla as well. Cocoa malts are there. The coffee seems muted. The flavors are on the sweeter side, most likely due to the sweet bourbon. Lots of milk chocolate. Some wood/oak notes. The coffee really isn't too noticeable. Finishes very bold and rich. It also finishes with a subtle enjoyable warmth, but it's absolutely not boozy at all. Alcohol goes unnoticed and it's actually dangerously drinkable. Mouthfeel is great. It's full-bodied and very creamy. The carbonation is on the lower side making it very velvety. Very smooth and balanced.

Very nice barrel aged stout. It's balanced and enjoyable, but very sweet. The coffee seems to be lost, but it's still a great brew nonetheless.

This is a great beer. Let it warm up a little and all the flavors opened up. Nice vanilla notes
