While Total Eclipse is the base for this barrel-aged brew, many of the features that I enjoy about the standard Total Eclipse (i.e., the lactose-sweetness and coffee flavors that make it an excellent breakfast stout) were absent from the palate of this beer. What one is left with instead is a extremely high-quality barrel-aged stout (without overt qualities of breakfast stoutness) that, when fresh, is on-par with an aged Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. There is no residual hotness from the bourbon, leaving only a creamy texture and almost-buttery flavor.

12 ounce bottle, 2015 edition. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that fizzled away quickly. However, there is a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some oaky woodiness noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and smooth with moderate carbonation. I liked the regular Total Eclipse, and I think the barrel aged version is good too. Definitely worth picking up if you come across some, I know I wouldn't mind picking up another bottle or 2!

10oz pour into a snifter

A - They don't call it Total Eclipse for nothing! Pours jet black with little to no head. Minimal lacing left on the glass.

S - Bourbon, chocolate, roasted coffee and vanilla wrapped up into one punch. This is definitely not a booze bomb, but nice and smooth. Very well balanced nose.

T - As mentioned above, there's a lot going on (bourbon, chocolate, roasted coffee and vanilla), but damn...this is one fantastic stout. May be a little sweet for some, but I think the bourbon just compliments this one so well. The flavors really shine once this beer starts to warm.

F - Nice thick stout, but wish it has just a tad more carbonation/head going on.

O - Hands down to Maumee Bay for not only improving on their well known Breakfast Stout, but also getting more involved with the barrel aged program. After 20 years in the game they know what they're doing and things will only continue to get better.

Poured from an undated bottle (2015 vintage) into a snifter. Excellent head retention and lacing. Boozy smell - bourbony. Chocolatety and sweet. Slightly dry finish. Silky smooth and light body. Not thick like an oat stout. Overall really good and happy I took the risk on a four pack! Will have again...even if I didn't have more bottles I will keep an eye out for this.

I was lucky enough to stop by the brewery in time to try a few pints of the new bourbon barrel aged version of Total Eclipse, which according to the brewer, is quickly running out. As the standard Total Eclipse is one of my favorite brews, I came in with fairly high expectations...

A - Pours a beautiful oily, jet black color with nice caramel head. Minimal head, maybe only half a finger or so and so-so retention, but looks gorgeous simply on the strength of the color.

S - A nice strong bourbon/alcohol smell with sweat chocolaty notes and a very very light hint of coffee. Very inviting.

T - The alcohol taste is nowhere near as strong as the smell suggests. The chocolate hits immediately with the coffee flavor breaking in a bit with the boozieness kicking in late. The finish has the familiar warming/lingering bourbon flavor, muted somewhat by the persisting chocolate sweetness. The aftertaste is also pretty faint after a few seconds...nice flavor, but not overpowering. First reaction was BCBS with some of the boozieness replaced with chocolate. Very tasty as long as you don't mind a very sweet, almost dessert-y taste in your beer. Also, as far as I know, this is Maumee Bay's first attempt at a bourbon barrel aged beer and I have to say they did quite well balancing the flavor of the barrels with the original beer.

M - Unlike BCBS, this is not the consistency of motor oil. In fact, it is quite a bit lighter than I expected. Somehow it seems even thinner and smoother than the regular Total Eclipse. Very easy to drink.

O - This is a very well done version of an already excellent beer. It is extremely drinkable and would be particularly great as a breakfast wake-me-up drink or even as a dessert beer with a side of vanilla ice cream. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone and very much hope they decide to start making this a rotating or even permanent release.

2015 vintage. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Basically pours black with a khaki head that falls leaving nice retention and lacing. Looks great. The aromas aren't overwhelming, but are very nice. Nice balance between bourbon and chocolate. Hints of caramel and vanilla as well. Cocoa malts are there. The coffee seems muted. The flavors are on the sweeter side, most likely due to the sweet bourbon. Lots of milk chocolate. Some wood/oak notes. The coffee really isn't too noticeable. Finishes very bold and rich. It also finishes with a subtle enjoyable warmth, but it's absolutely not boozy at all. Alcohol goes unnoticed and it's actually dangerously drinkable. Mouthfeel is great. It's full-bodied and very creamy. The carbonation is on the lower side making it very velvety. Very smooth and balanced.

Very nice barrel aged stout. It's balanced and enjoyable, but very sweet. The coffee seems to be lost, but it's still a great brew nonetheless.

I have heard this is infected. I'm not sure it's true. I believe the coffee probably just had a slight vinous quality to it giving the impression of infection. I don't think the beer benefited from this however and it kept my score low.
