Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.10%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maumee Bay Brewing Company’s Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout is a hearty meal in a glass. As it pours, it devours the light and your glass is filled with darkness. This massive beer brewed with espresso beans (from Flying Rhino in Toledo, OH), oatmeal, and lactose offers a rich and complex taste that begs to be savored. With a smooth carbonation and luscious roasted malt flavor, you will fade to black as you slowly sip this finely crafted brew. We recommend serving at 45-50 degrees in your favorite snifter. It’s nothing but total bliss from Maumee Bay Brewing Co.

Decent pour, hoping for more of a fluffy, longer lasting head. Sweet milk chocolate, rich coffee on the nose. Something tastes not quite right for a coffee stout. Bitter, fruity berries finish the taste. It's not exactly off putting but not my favorite profile from the coffee. Good mouthfeel, silky. Glad I just bought one bottle.

This is okay, but anyone claiming it is as good or better than Founders Breakfast Stout is out of their damn mind. Aroma is decent...kinda like an espresso & cream, but it's a bit overcarbed with a metallic, slightly sour berry-like finish that detracts from the coffee and chocolate notes. I also wish there were more agressive roast flavors and the sweetness was toned down a bit. I recommend having this on the cold side rather than cellar temp. Again, this is no Founders Breakfast Stout, but more like a poor man's Moloko.

Really nice and balanced breakfast stout. Pours jet black, nice head that fades a bit quickly but spot on color, carb, and lacing. Lactose and coffee definitely dominate the nose but the flavor here is really well balanced. Really nice breakfast stout I think I prefer to Founders which I generally feel is a bit too heavy on the coffee.

Bottle into a Boulevard Tank 7 tulip. Pours a dark brown and settles black in th glass. About 1 finger of fizzy, khaki-colored foam initially, which bubbled down to a lacing after a minute or two. No head whatsoever after 5 minutes. Lots of carbonation bubbles clinging to the bottom and sides of the glass. Big nose on this guy - I could smell it as I was pouring. Strong notes of milk chocolate, lactose, and coffee with hints of caramel and vanilla. On the taste, bittersweet baker's chocolate, bold coffee, bitter oats, and a touch of lactose and vanilla on the back end. On the sweeter side, and very tasty. I am getting a bit of a metallic taste on the finish, but I may be drinking it a little too warm so I'll let that slide. In terms of feel, it's good albeit a tad thin & oily. Definitely thick enough the carry the flavor and alcohol. Overall, not bad at all but not my favorite.

Pours a dark chocolate color. Aroma is coffee and chocolate. Flavor is coffee, chocolate and a creamy oatmeal. The flavor is nice but the mouthfeel is a little thick. Kind of hard to describe like a rich thick liquid that turns carbonated on your tongue. Not the biggest fan of this but overall this is a tasty brew.

This is a pretty drink that opens all black and brown, as it should, with nice little bubbles. The aroma is very roasty, malty and coffee.

The taste of a thick, rich, coffee experience. The booze comes a little in the after taste. This is a very good beer from a brewer I normally do not care for enough to give blind faith to. Good one, people.

A: Upfront big coffee aroma, followed by deep roasted malts that have lots of chocolate/coffee character, faint vanilla aroma, with a light sweet finish.

A: Black, totally opaque with moderate beige head that dissipates pretty quickly. Moderate lacing evident.

T: Moderate coffee flavor, followed by lots of semi-sweet bakers chocolate from the malts. The beer has a semi-dry finish with a light bitterness.

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Pretty solid; the beer has a nice upfront coffee aroma, followed by lots of chocolate malts. Since the coffee flavor is solid, but not overly complex – the beer could use another layer to make it better and even more tasty.

12 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at ~50 degrees F.

Appearance: Your usual stout black, letting no light through, with some patches of brown bubbles along the bulge of the snifter. Forms a thin, fizzy, short-lived head of brown bubbles, which rapidly becomes just a ring of brown bubbles around the edge of the surface.

Smell: Coffee. Coffee not unlike the standard breakfast diner Arabica blend. There isn't much else to the aroma, beyond a thin sort of burnt-bitter grain smell, and perhaps a vague tinge of blackstrap.

Taste: Coffee. Coffee not unlike the standard breakfast diner Arabica blend. That's how the flavor profile opens, proceeds, and closes. A handful of other flavors pop their heads through the flavor profile door while it's open, making little cameos - blackened wheat, faint molasses, very mild chocolate, something vaguely resembling a tinge of berry - but for the most part, this is like drinking chilled Arabica coffee.

Mouthfeel: Thick and full bodied, with carbonation just this side of flat. Oddly enough, has a somewhat watery breakdown at the very end of the swallow, despite the fullness throughout the rest of the process.

Overall: While not bad, in fact rather solid, this is not a spectacular example of a breakfast stout. Coffee lovers may find it wonderful. I find it to be right around par for a stout, particularly of the double/imperial ilk.

Pitch black with a frothy khaki head. The head is soft with great retention.

Lots of coffee in the aroma. Anise, chocolate, and char.

The espresso really bursts in the flavor. Fresh cold pressed coffee. Black licorice, dark chocolate, tobacco. Slightly bitter and dry in the finish.

Very smooth and full body. Moderate carbonation. Creamy.

A fantastic no thrills imperial coffee stout. The coffee is the center of attention and mouthfeel is wonderful.

On point, solid roasted coffee and bakers chocolate note, little to no astringency. Great mouth feel, heavy body with light but creamy carbonation.

Cheers!

Bottle:
Beer pours dark brown, looking black in a thick goblet. Head grows and recedes quickly. Definitely some froth comes with just a little agitation, but it too runs back into the glass and near the edge.

Nose is a wonderful lightly sweet coffee once the beer comes to temperature. Initial notes also showed some bitter tartness and more sweetness. I like the mellowed out scents from the warmer beer.

The taste hits first with a little sweetness, but it is quickly replaced with coffee and dark chocolate roasted malt notes. Then that fruit, berry-like taste comes in and reminds me of a berry-filled dark chocolate candy bar (but not as sweet). However, as the beer warms, the strength of this fades and even morphs into a coffee-with-cream, lightly sweetened. Some sips I still get some tart-bitter notes but they seem like maybe they come from the play of the lactose and the bitter malts.

Feel is a tad oily, but it makes the beer easy to drink. Medium body, warmth makes this feel a bit thinner. There is a certain depth of flavor that sustains throughout, however. A very nice, easy drinking higher ABV beer. Definitely hides the alcohol well.

Definitely a worthy beer. With the lactose, it fits into milk stout territory, with coffee added. The type of sweetness of the "base style" is obvious, and the coffee notes are well balanced in there. I definitely appreciate this beer for the balance, and would let it warm a little more before my first sip next time I have it.

Wow! From the bottle in a snifter. This delicious stout pours a decadent black with a thick head of brown foam that dissipates to a thick ring, pooling layer, and features spotty lacing. Nose of dark chocolate, vanilla, espresso, toffee, and sweet cream. Flavors follow and surpass the nose with rich creamy chocolate on all sides, strong cold pressed coffee in the middle, a touch of vanilla and toffee on the sides and back, followed by a chocolate coated malted milk ball flavor that is roasted enough to keep from being cloying. Creamy and coating mouth feel is chewy and rich with a solid malt backbone that is roasted without being overly burnt.

OUTSTANDING!

One of the best stouts I have had this year.....a top 10 in the stout world. A new favorite.

Cheers!

Pours black with a dark brown head that didn't last. Smells like breakfast in a glass. Some coffee, chocolate, and a hint of syrup. Coffee is the dominant taste but it has a nice malt character. Feel is the only weakness. Carbonation is a bit lacking and is a bit watery.

Look: Dark body with a dark mocha head that rings the glass shortly after leaving the bottle.
Smell: Bitterness, roast, black coffee, some milk chocolate, and lactose sweetness.
Taste: The taste is similar to the smell, however, a sour twang is leftover in the finish.
Feel: The body could use a little bit more BODY. The lather in the mouth is decent, but it could use a bump up.

Overall - I don't know if I received a bad bottle, but this was unusual. The sour finish was not desirable. If I set aside the sour finish, things look better. However, I cannot, because it is there :(

Shout out to The Brew Review Crew for the trade!

Appearance: Thick black pour with absolutely no light coming through, and a two finger dark brown head. One of the better looking stouts iv seen

Smell: My nose picks up a nice balance between fresh ground coffee, milk chocolate, and caramel sweetness

Taste: Coffee and slight cocoa notes upfront with a roasted malt and caramel sweetness finish

Mouthfeel: medium body, and very light for the style. Smooth followed by prickly carbonation and slight bitter finish

Overall: This is good, but not Founders good as others have claimed. Its not as rich, the coffee flavor doesnt linger as long, and the mouthfeel isnt chewy; rather light actually. Id put a few coffee stouts iv had above this, all of which are available to me. i.e. Founders, Wake n Bake, Victory at Sea, etc. If this is available in your area, then it is a pleasant offering, but i wouldnt go crazy seeking it out

The 12 oz bottle pours a viscous, jet black into the snifter. The dark tan/mocha head is on the smaller side even wih a solid pour, but about an 1/8" ring stays around the whole time. A little bit of lacing.

Smells like coffee beans first, then some milk chocolate, roasted caramel malts, and some sweetness. As it warms, the malt really starts to shine. It's a nice combination of oatmeal and a fresh mash.

Taste is pretty sweet up front. A Twix like chocolate and milk sugar. Deep roasted malts follow, and the most coffee flavor is actually at the back end. Aftertaste is where I notice the coffee the most and is pretty bitter considering the subtle flavors overall and the 30 IBU label. Alcohol not noticeable at all.

The body is where this one really shines. Even though there is a slight tingling feel to it, overall it is very silky smooth, creamy, and slightly chewy, yet very easy drinking. I am tempted to go 5 in this category.

I have heard talk of this Ohio brew being as good as FBS for a few years, so I was glad to finally find bottles if it closer to home than Toledo. I kind of wondered how much homerism was taking place. While I dont think it is quite as good, it is close, and holds it's own for sure. If you are looking for a coffee bomb, you may be disappointed a bit. The coffee is a more subtle/balanced/integrated. This one drinks like a milk stout with coffee. It is also sweeter, perhaps a tad too much at times. I bounced back and forth between 4.25 and 4.5 on taste. An outstanding, well rounded beer in the end.

Came to Toledo with my wife for the day to visit the city's excellent art museum and stopped in to the brewery for dinner. First time back at this establishment in a little over 5 years, as my now wife used to live here for about 9 months before we got married. On to the review. Served to me on-tap in a standard pint glass, this beer is a very dark brown, almost black color that has no interest in letting in any light at all. Had a tan head that is about an in h thick when first poured that eventually settles to a somewhat thin ring surrounding the inside of the glass. Not much lacing. Aromas of roasted caramel malt sweetness that is followed by oatmeal and coffee notes. The taste is pretty much the same, with strongly roasted malts with caramel sweetness that gives way to oatmeal and black coffee bitterness and is rounded out with a slight hop presence. Has a crisp, slightly prickly, smooth and slightly creamy, slightly syrupy and chewy, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. One of the most drinkable stouts of this type I have ever had, and a very excellent beer here!

Pleasantly Surprised. Never heard of this brewery before. Dark body. Dark chocolate taste with a good helping of coffee. Like a nice espresso. I like Founders more, but this Breakfast Stout is pretty good as well.

Poured from a growler into a pint glass
A: Pitch black with a 1/2-finger brown head that quickly settles
S: Tons of coffee, cocoa, milk chocolate, dark malts, vanilla
T: Matches the nose. Lots of coffee but also some creamy chocolate. A nice balance of sweet and bitter
M: Full-bodied, again somewhat sweet/somewhat bitter
O: This is a well-made, enjoyable beer

Fantastic stout. Well balanced chocolate and coffee. Starts off a bit on the sweet side, but a balancing dark chocolate bitterness comes through on the finish. Mouthfeel is superb for the style. Thick and silky smooth throughout with low soft carbonation. Carries the flavors well. Espresso and creamy oats come through more as it warms. I'll definitely be buying more of this.

Appearance is brown-black with a tan head that fades and some nice lacing.

Nose is sweet lactose, with peanut brittle, black coffee, and fresh hops.

Taste is more bitter than sweet, with dark coffee and sweet milk, clove and buttered croissant.

Mouthfeel is easy, with mild carbonation and balanced alcohol. Warm finish.

Overall, this is not bad at all!

Look 9/10
Smell 18/20
Taste 37/40
Feel 19/10
Drinkability 19/20

Overall 92/100

Nice coffee style stout... Has nice body and a nice robust flavor without being too bitter or off balance. I think the 9% ABV is pretty well hidden. Although some booze is presence. Lacks the all world creaminess and coffee profile of founders. Still def worth a grab of you see it~
