Maumee Bay Brewing Company
Ohio, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.10%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maumee Bay Brewing Company’s Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout is a hearty meal in a glass. As it pours, it devours the light and your glass is filled with darkness. This massive beer brewed with espresso beans (from Flying Rhino in Toledo, OH), oatmeal, and lactose offers a rich and complex taste that begs to be savored. With a smooth carbonation and luscious roasted malt flavor, you will fade to black as you slowly sip this finely crafted brew. We recommend serving at 45-50 degrees in your favorite snifter. It’s nothing but total bliss from Maumee Bay Brewing Co.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Inky black in color, with a moderate head of dark tan foam.
Aroma-Dark roasted coffee
Taste-Black patent malt, roasted coffee, dark chocolate. Very easygoing and smooth for the strength. More like an imperial porter than a stout if that is possible. Lucky to have this fine offering available in bottles and in my back yard, so to speak.

Bottled, served in a snifter, purchased on 5/14/13 at House of Wine in Marietta, Ohio. Shared this with the wife.

Motor oil, no light penetrates, thin half finger ecru head with Moderate retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, dark chocolate, flaked oats, and great earthy roasted coffee. Taste reminds me very much of Founders Breakfast Stout, but this beer has a little more coffee earthiness, is dank, and has a bit of grit in the mouthfeel which I am digging. A touch of tobacco, leather, this beer is complex. Low carbonation is fitting, chewy. Nice touch of warming alcohol.

Fantastic oatmeal stout, this was a very pleasant surprise. I think this beer will do very well and may get taking away on the hype train if people seek this out.

A - Pours as advertised, a completely opaque, jet black color. Not entirely viscous, but very dark. Small, 1 finger, dark brown head.

S - Incredibly amounts of roasted coffee, sweet chocolate, and dark fruits/raisins. Very tasty smell. Almost mouth-watering

T - Again, tons of coffee--almost mocha-like. Follows quickly with very sweet chocolate, fruity in nature almost, finishing with a bitter hop bite and more coffee and dark chocolate.

M - Incredibly creamy and smooth.

Overall - Wow. This one is a game. A truly superb imperial stout. Right up there with the best of them.

A: 12 oz bottled Poured into a 16oz snifter, Although I've had it on tap poured into a pint glass as well. It's a black to brown body with a light brown head to it . The head after a moderate pour was about one fingers worth.

S: Chocolate, Mocha Coffee, Roasted nuts Cocoa Powder, slight boozey smell in the back.

T: Just like the smell, you get a big hit of Mocha in there and finish off with a the roasted malt flavor and a light taste from the alcohol warming.

M: Moderately thick and coats the mouth, which is to be expected from this type of beer.

Overall: This is easily my favorite Ohio stouts and arguably my all time favorite of the breakfast stout style (non-bourbon aged). It's right up there with Founders Breakfast Stout for sure, it'd be interesting to have a tasting of both of them back to back. This beer along with Amarillo Brillo and Maumee Bay's IPA just went to 12oz bottles a few weeks ago which was truly thrilling, and long awaited. I hope they bottle some of more of their brewery exclusives here in the near futue.

First off, I'm a stout lover and very hard to please! With that said, this is one of the best stouts I have ever had. Right up there with Founders Breakfast Stout which is hard to do. I tried this at the Big Beers and Barleywine. I had never heard of Maumee brewery before and I'm sure glad I stopped and tried it because it was awesome. Planning on making a 3 hour trip to their Microbrewery in November to fill a few growlers of this. This is a must try if you have a chance.

Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout
Maumee Bay Brewing Company
Style: American Double / Imperial Stout
ABV: 8.60 %

LOOK: Pitch black, off white tan head. Plenty of lacing, brown lacing at that.

SMELL: Chocolate, oats, coffee, and roasted/peat smoked malts.

TASTE: Decadent chocolate, bitter coffee rounds, rich roasted malt flavors all upfront. There is a good balance between the cocoa sweetness and coffee bitterness. Oats lend to the smoothness of feel and richness in taste.

FEEL: Silky smooth, creamy, low carbonated, robust finish.

OVERALL: A high quality coffee stout from Maumee Bay. Definitely recommended.

A: Served with a very small amount of dark tan head. Pours a dark back.

S: Strong roasted coffee note with hints of cocoa and a slight alcohol astringency.

T: A very well blended flavor profile. It starts off with a sweet and roasty blend that fades slowly with a hint of alcoholic heat.

M: A very thick, full bodied beer. It just coats the whole mouth leaving a residual amount of flavor long after you've swallowed your sip of beer.

O: This is an excellent stout: thick, rich, and flavorful. Not too complex, but it does a.few flavors very well. Definitely worth trying if you have the chance.

Pours a dark dark brown with little deep brown highlights and a tiny toffee colored head that lingers as a pool of foam atop the tulip.

Aroma is sweet toffee, buttery caramel, a bit of alcohol, burnt sugar and slightly toasted malts. Smells nothing like a stout. Then again it's hard to smell anything other than fried in this place.

Flavor is a bit thinner than I had hoped, but given the lack of traditional roast malt and coffee aroma, I guess I should have expected that. Still, the roast malt makes itself known in the flavor throughout. Tends toward the sweet side, burnt sugar, a slight bit of coffee finish. Dark fruits creep in as it warms.

Body is tending toward the heavy side with minimal carbonation. No astringency, bit a slight slickness is evident.

Overall a pretty good deviation from the traditional roast malt dominated stout. Alcohol is evident but somewhat balanced. Definitely worth a try.

On tap at catskeller.... Since when does maumee bay distribute?!

Pours a dark dark brown. Almost black. Some nice tan head.
Smells roasty and chocolately. Lots of coffee as well. Really nice aroma! Tastes a bit bitter. Lots of roast and coffee. Nice rich chocolatey undertones. Strong. A bit boozy. Thick, very nice body. Overall a great beer!

On-tap at the cafe in the Oliver House complex.

A: The stout is black, an ebon-hued brew. The opacity is a given and a tan colored head, more brown than white, looks stately. In fact it almost looks like a nitro pour (it is, in fact, not).

S: The nose has a strong coffee aroma, dark, roasted and sweet. Oatmeal and lactic aromas add fullness and a breakfast feel.

T: Chocolate and coffee, the stout and the Flying Rhino coffee really mixing it up. Oatmeal lends a creamy smooth aspect to the ale, a lactic sweetness that the coffee takes a liking to. The milk stout aspect is very strong, a great pairing with the coffee. The stout body isn't a distraction, just a firm base for the coffee and the milk. A big shocker and maybe my favorite of the day.

M: Creamy smooth, the oatmeal and lactose really keep the ale going. The coffee is expertly added, a fuller and sweeter flavor.

This is my first review so here we go...

Served on tap at the brewpub in a snifter glass.

Appearance: Just plain black with a carmel colored one finger head that held up well.

Smell: smells of coffee, bits of chocolate and some malty notes.

Taste: Coffee, malty, coffee, chocolate, and more coffee...in a good way. The finishing flavors are nice.

Mouth: Thick, coats the mouth like it should.

Obviously I liked it if it was worth making my first review. Need to go back and get a growler to take back to NW Indiana with me before I leave town.

Well done Maumee Bay.

Taken home three nights ago...notes are fresh.

This one pours out a deep, rich dark brown.Surprisingly, I still get a one finger head with fair retention and light to moderate lacing on the glass.
The smell is what I was hoping for: rich, deep roasted malts with all the bittersweet dark chocolate nuances and, not to seem repetitive, but a very rich dark roast coffee presence as well.
The taste follows suit, and it's no wonder; this one is a collaboration between MBBC and a local gourmet coffee and chocolate producer, and their product is excellent. This is the combination connoisseurs and beer advocates dream of.
The mouthfeel is nearly as big, thick, rich, and robust as off the tap, though it's thinned just a little.
I'd love to sip this at any time of day, all day long. A high ABV lowers drinkability, but I'd be daring enough to hold this up against Founder's Breakfast stout or any of the big boys. It's not better (they are amazing, after all), but I can honestly say I believe it's as good.

This beer more or less comes off as being some kind of coffee milkshake. It is probably the thickest beer I have ever had but it tastes like nothing more than coffee. It smells as if one is walking down the coffee aisle at the store and looks like motor oil. There was about a half an inch caramel head as well. I did not even taste the alcohol and these just kept going down so smoothly. Blown away that Maumee Bay did something so good.

I poured from my growler into my glass. I got one finger of brown head. It is black. The aroma is dark roasted malt and coffee. The taste is delicious. It has a nice coffee presence, but not a bitter, black coffee taste. It's like coffee with cream in it. It has a nice viscous mouthfeel. This is one of the best coffee stouts that I have encountered.
