Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Dark Heart Chocolate Cherry Porter is MBBC's version of love in a glass. We used 9 different grains to brew a strong and robust-style porter. Then we added cherry puree, cocoa nibbs, and whole Madagascarian vanilla beans. We used German and our own homegrown Sunbeam whole hops to balance the sweetness nicely. ABV clocks in at 6.5%. Love and decadence in time for Valentine's Day. *Ask your server for chocolate shavings and a cherry!!*

My growler purchase was actually my first try at this beer; differences are light.

This is a dark, heavy-looking brew. Exceptionally dark brown but not black, the head forms pretty way and sticks around for a time, but doesn't leave quite as much lacing. No shavings or cherry in the growler.
There's no doubt that 9 grains were used; this thing is a beast of a porter with an extremely strong backbone, and massively roasty at that. The roastiness in the aroma and the flavor almost threatens to overcome the other elements, but using half a ton of cherry puree in brewing this beer doesn't allow the cherry to go unnoticed. It offers more tartness than sweetness, but the addition of vanilla beans offers just enough of a creamy sweet note to balance the heavy roast and tang, keeping it from going astringent. Dark cocoa is also pretty heavy in here; they used cocoa nibs, so it's raw and fresh. This is powerful stuff. The addition of hops bitterness makes for quite a mix of flavors.
I'm glad this beer didn't lose any of its body in the growler; if anything, it evened out a little. It's still a heavy porter, very much American in the feel as well as the rest of it. The light crispness wasn't lost, and it actually developed a little more smoothness that was really nice.
