BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Great Northern Brewing Co. / Black Star Draught House
Montana, United States
greatnorthernbrewing.com

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.75%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Combining the best aspects of three major types of beer, Wheatfish is brewed like a German wheat beer, cold-fermented, aged like a lager, and hopped (three separate additions of Cascade hops) like an American Ale. The wheat contributes a full body and light spiciness, the hops give citrus hints and the finish is crisp and smooth. Wheatfish is low in bitterness and extremely drinkable.

Reviewing as an American Pale Wheat Ale not an American Pale Lager (change requested). Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Harriet pils glass.

Gorgeous, glowing, cloudy jonquil body with two fingers of lasting off white merengue up top. Thick lovely lacing and perpetual retention. A stunner in the looks department...

Light banana in the nose with hints of bubblegum and clove, suggesting a bavarian yeast strain. Hints of vanilla as the beer warms. Hops are absent, and wheat and malt are well balanced yet restrained.

Light yet distinctive malt flavors, Vienna malt and malted wheat work very well off each other. This tastes more like a pale ale than a lager in some ways, though it is still crisp and finishes with just a touch of wheat-y twang. Simple "American" hefeweizen profile, but well balanced and with no elements overpowering the others.

Pillowy, soft, effervescent, creamy yet still light-bodied mouthfeel.

A surprisingly good beer - I'm not usually a fan of the "Americanized" hefeweizen styles, but this one is quietly superior.

Kind of dull. Potential tastes are present which tells me that it would probably be enjoyable on a hot day after mowing the lawn or something. Looks like a light hefeweizen, smells like an unskunked corona. Decent mouth feel. Has a really bland finish. Certainly not the best offering from Great Northern.

Had a sour smell with a lot of oxidation. Diacetyl ruled the tiny 14 oz kingdom of this beer. Maybe the lines were bad, maybe the stars didn't align. Mouthfeel was weak, thin, unbalanced beer, too sweet, but there is little room for appreciation of most wheats and ambers for my tastebuds.

had with a meal at the Mackenzie River Pizza Co. in Whitefish, Montana
A - showed up with a thin covering of head, hazy straw yellow
S - mild with grainy malt, sour citrus smell, and a grassy hop note
T - sour apple and lemon dominates, grainy malt, some grassy and metallic notes, pretty average
M - medium carbonation, thin and mild
D - generally disappointed with this, very mild all around, no real character to it

Nutty butty bar melted on your dash and then froze overnight and found the next morning on your way to work some fruity richness some spices and some hmmmmk hmmmm dunno what it is but sure is tasty. Not great but Montana doesn't have much of a selection for wheat beer soooooooo

The beer after disassociating itself from the 12 ounce brown bottle sits in the glass a somewhat hazy gold color, the head is smallish and bright white with the lace a thin sheet to obscure the glass. Nose is crisp and clean, sweet malt and nice id somewhat sweet start with a fair to middling grain presence. Top is light to moderate in its feel to the palate, finish is stern in its acidity, the hops are modest but present with a very dry aftertaste that lingers long on the palate, a drinkable beer, good on a hot summer day as it won’t overload your palate or your stomach.

Sampled on tap at the brewhouse, then brought back a six pack.
Color is a slightly hazy yellow, thin white head. Foam does shrink, but leaves a little bit of lace. Not alot of aroma, light malt and kind of grassy, but not a strong hefe smell. Taste is good, not much complexity, mix of malt grain and hop bitterness. Well carbonated gives a nice body. A touch of bitter finish. Nothing spectacular, but easy to drink and thirst quenching.

After trying this beer on a sampler tray at Great Northern Brewing Co., I picked up a sixer to take back to our cabin in Glacier National Park. Poured with a large, frothy white head with good lacing. Body was cloudy and yellow. Great aroma of light yeast, wheat, and some fruitiness. Medium-bodied on the palate, thin with some oiliness, and average carbonation. Great flavor with average duration that was lightly sweet... you can taste the wheat, but not in amounts as high as some other wheat ales. Overall I thought it was very enjoyable, and a great summer ale. I could have several of these out on the deck.

A - Poured a hazy pale golden colour, thin film of head with little retention and no lacing.

S - Grassy pilsener hop scent with a wheat finish, some sour lemon and light biscuit malts.

T - Much like the scent with the sour lemon coming through alongside the pilsener style hops. The wheaty flavours linger with some bready malts.

M - Too thin for my liking, and rather disappointing.

D - Overall, it was well paired with the pizza I ordered, but was a little disappointing. The flavours were mild and unadventurous. Easily drinkable, but a little too thin. If given the chopice I would've ordered something else.

Had on tap at some lounge in a lodge just outside of Glacier National Park. Really had no idea what I was ordering here, as I chose it on a whim even though I usually don't care for wheat beers. Turned out to be blown away.

This is a beautiful beer, golden-orange and hazy with a foamy head, just all around great appetizing appearance.

It smells citrusy and bready, a unique smell compared to the banana/clove smells of many other wheat beers. Strangely enough, a woman at the table next to me commented that she thought it smelled wonderful so she decided to order one too. I have no idea how she could smell it from so far away; she must have superhuman olfactory abilities.

Tastes malty and bready and sweet, but not too sweet. I had one pint without the orange slice that came with it and one pint with the orange, tasted fantastic both ways. The fruit is not necessary as it is with some lesser beers that need their flavors hidden with added citrus...

Others have mentioned the creamy mouthfeel, and I agree. It's creamy but light, and is certainly refreshing after a long hike through Glacier.

Overall this is one of the best beers I had on my recent trip west, and I wasn't exactly expecting to find that in Montana.
