Brown/amber pour with minimal tan head. The big plus here is complexity. Toasted malt up front, followed by a rotisserie of flavors--caramel, dark fruit. There's a funky start and a sweeter finish. Nicely balanced, ample flavor.

Pours a deep mahogany coloration that turns ruby red when held up against the light, with a medium fluffy head. Smells of bready, grainy, caramel malt and distinct peat smoke, as well as notes of dark and red fruit, brown sugar and hints of honey. Taste is an excellent balance of bready, grainy, caramel malt, dark fruit and red berries, with notes of plum, fig, cranberry and red currant, some peat smoke and heather honey, as well as hints of walnut, spice and bitter, herbal and earthy hops. Finishes bittersweet, with some heather honey, peat smoke, dark/red fruit and brown sugar lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

Reading some of the other reviews, I was afraid that this would be way too sweet for me, but I did not end up feeling like that at all. While there are some rich caramel malt, brown sugar and heather honey notes to this, they are balanced very nicely against some peat smoke, bitter hops and subtle spice here. The dark fruit and particularly red berries are coming through strongly as well, lending some certain sherry undertones to this along with the warming alcohol presence and hints of spice. Overall, this makes for a very rich and complex example of the style that balances sweet malts against spicy and bitter hop notes very well. Maybe it's because, assuming a 12-moth best-by date, my bottle is quite fresh at less than 2 months old.

Time for round 2 of this weekends tasting thread, this time with a Wee Heavy. I've only had a few of the style before, and this is my first one that's genuinely from Scotland. I'm wondering how it will stand up the the American and Icelandic takes on the style I've had previously. Let's find out

Pours a deep reddish brown with 2 fingers of soapy tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves nice lacing

This is super malty and rich in the nose, nearing the border of too sweet but still is great. I'm picking up on aromas of golden raisin, dark bread, toast, caramel, sweet toffee, and a touch of smoked malt

There's a little more bite in taste, but it still trends quite sweet overall. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting dates, earthy hops, dark bread, peat smoke, rich toffee, and light raisin. The swallow brings notes of dark bread, peat smoke, raisin, caramel malt, earthy hops, and burnt sugar

A medium body pairs with moderate carbonation, resulting in a surprisingly crisp beer. Finishes mostly dry with a lingering sweetness

This isn't anything revolutionary, but it's damn solid, and a nice reference point for the non-Scottish versions I've had

Two fingers of tan foam, dark reddish amber tone with bright clarity.

Mild malty aroma, caramelized sugars.

Flavors of caramelized sugars, tobacco leaf, toasted bread crusts. Malt forward with a comforting feel, medium bodied and smooth, ample carbonation.

Excellent example of the style, despite the initial metallic note.

11.2oz bottle (SEP2022 etched on the neck-nearly impossible to see when full) poured into a tulip glass at 47° Fahrenheit 7.4% ABV. The beer pours brownish amber in color with mahogany highlights and khaki head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of uneven sizes bubbles. Slight lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring dried fruit and rich malt. The taste is semisweet toasted malt with a hint of smoke. There's burnt sugar caramel, cherry, raisin, prune and moderate earthy bitterness as well. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, excellent. I first tried this beer many years ago and it is still wonderful. I wish it was more readily available.

Pours a dark ruby red with a fluffy beige head and almost no lacing.

Tastes of malt sweetness and dark fruit up front with a little spice/caramel mixed in and has a mild-med bitter finish. It seemed lighter than what I was expecting.

Very dark brown, beige foam, ok.
Mlaty and full smell, hazelnut, nut fruits.
Malty taste, toffee, hazelnut. Some herbal notes, too, for a bit of balance.
Toffee, vanilla, hazelnut in the (intense) aftertaste. Herbal finish.
Average body.
Not bad.

Poured from bottle to mug. Pours clear deep ruby/dark brown with off white head falling to a collar ring. Aroma is sweet dark bread, brown sugar. Pretty much straight malt. Taste is similar to smell. Lots of brown sugar, raisin, bready malt. Feel is medium bodied, decent carbonation, a bit chewy. Overall this is a sweet beer that to me is a bit filling. This is good though. I enjoyed it very much.

Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into teku glass. Pours a beautifully clear dark amber with 2 fingers of off-white head. smells like christmas pudding with brown sugar, dried currants, and warming spices. Taste follows the nose but adds an undercurrent of dark toffee. Fantastic example of a wee heavy. There is a reason these guys have been around for so long

This is a different Wee heavy than I reviewed 16 years ago, Belhaven now calling it 90 Shilling.
It pours a beautiful deep, garnet brown, crystal clear with a creamy tan head that hangs around a while. Specks and smears of sticky lace cling all around the goblet.
Aromas of boiled sugar, apple sauce, molasses and granola dripping in honey. Richer caramel notes come forward as it warms but not a huge malt bomb blast to the nostrils.
Flavor mirrors the nose but bolder - full of ale fruity flavors only hinted at in the aroma.
Apples and cherries stewed in molasses and brown sugar plus a great grass and leather hop bite that adds depth, balance and complexity to the malt dominant beer. The dark and caramel malts lend a smokey aspect but no true peat smoke really, just the warmth of slightly charred notes of the dark grains.
The body is medium and the finish is clean and surprisingly bitter - mildly for sure, but more lingering hop bite than I remember. Still a classic example of the style with a bit more alcohol and a little less smoked malt I think.
This is a treat. Flavorful and not heavy or cloying with terrific balance that appropriately leans to the sweet side.

A rare beer, it seems an antithesis of the ipa style. Like an old beer. Very malt, little hops, sweet, with little bitterness. Despite the low density of the water, a beer that needs a quiet, rested sip, without stridency. Although not a wonderful beer, I liked it, I will repeat, I found it very authentic

As a more knowledge beer friend said to me about this beer...is it a 90/- or a wee heavy? Apparently two different things.

Deep ruby color, brilliantly clear. Pours a large off white head, creamy and lingering.

Strong malt aroma with some raisin and plum. A hint of booze? Maybe a hint of diacetyl?

Very intensely malty flavor as would expect from the aroma. Some baked bread flavors, and a bit of an estery floral note that didn't notice in the aroma.

Medium-high body and medium-low carbonation. Has a nice, rounded mouthfeel.

Definitely a rich beer that seems like it would be bigger than its 7.4% abv. Definitely a sipper for a cold night around the fire.

No indication of date on the bottle, so this could be a month old or 10 years old....I am a huge fan of Wee Heavy ales, so I'm excited for this one. Let's get going. Pours a nice dark brown with tons of carbonation. Bubbles throughout and quite persistent. Quickly escaping head. Nose is toffee, malts, raisin, bread, walnuts. Taste is really nice, and a bit of a 90 degree shift from the nose. Much sweeter than expected, but in a really nice way. A touch of caramel candy. It even has a touch of German dark ale to it - kind of reminds me a tad of Celebrator. Raisins, blackberries, bread, dried apricots, and maybe a bit of cherry. This is really smooth and super easy to drink. Mouthfeel is just right - medium bodied with a perfect lingering sweetness. Overall, a fantastic beer that I will definitely buy again!
