This is undoubtedly one of the finest scotch ales I have had. The key characteristics are balance and drink-ability. Poured in a snifter and paired with some smoked gouda cheese. Deep amber brown with a light white head that dissipates soon. Sweet caramel aromas, a bit smoky. Taste is sweet, bit not too sweet. Love the balance, you cannot taste the alcohol, or any fruity esters, or any bitterness yet it is a blend of it all. I would rate a 'wee' higher than even the Traquair House Ale which is my standard when it comes to Scotch Ales.

Pours a very dark amber to brown, with a very nice off white head. Scent of caramel and toffee dominate. Taste is very malty with notes of brown sugar and toffee dominating the beer. Very sweet, possibly a little overly sweet. Medium bodied and fairly lightly carbonated, this beer is smooth and easy to drink. If it wasn't quite so sweet I could enjoy multiple at a time, but its just a little too sweet in my opinion. Overall this is a good beer.

For me this is a revelation in beers from the UK, for the style, for the country, now Scottish beers have a reason.
This Ale is simply wonderful, balanced, tasty, good looking and good smelling, full bodied and creamy (for the style)... very enjoyable.
They say it's like a cake in the glass, and they are right. Chocolate and molasses in smell and taste, I had it with some roasted ham and soft gouda cheese and it worked fairly good, but it was pretty good even with dark chocolate.
This is simply amazing, highly recommended.
A very good surprise, like Fuller's ESB was (UK, but different style and unfortunately far more pricey).

Wee Heavy is one of my favorite beer styles and I've had several, but this my current favorite. Would love to know what The Bros. feel about it. It's rich and malty, more sweet than bitter. Just enough carbonation. Kind of indulgent. Had it at a restaurant from the bottle. Would love to find a sixer of it somewhere. It would be a regular occupant of my fridge.

Look: dark brown/amber
Smell: Sweet and warm
Taste: More on the sweet side for sure. Very malty, very little hop flavor
Feel: Rich, creamy

Undated bottle into pint glass. Thin tan head, light carbonation. Clear, deep amber-brown; translucent - kind of looks like a Coke.

Doesn't TASTE anything like a Coke, however. Sweet malt up front, with caramel predominating. Refreshing mouthfeel - carbonation, while light, is just about perfect. Very smooth and drinkable. Not very sessionable at 7.4%, but a very pleasant taste experience.

This beer is now my go-to product for Scotch Ales. Since about 2008 my favourite in this category was McEwan's Scotch ale. Unfortunately, Belhaven 90/~ Wee Heavy wasn't available at BC liquor stores in Victoria until only about a year ago. It's now a rare commodity in this province again so I bought up about 60 bottles. I find it interesting how what I consider such a premium beer like even McEwan's has a slight bit of bitterness compared to this Wee Heavy. This beer has a significantly reduced smell in the glass, less than I would like, but it does very little to impact the flavour or overall experience. Lower carbonation prevents the beer from biting your tongue and muting all the wonderful flavours. I love the sweetness and especially the "weight" and substantial mouth feel. One (or 2) of these feels like a small meal!

I found this to be quite enjoyable. Very much a scotch ale, with toffee, brown sugar, golden raisin, honey, caramelized sugars, and a little smoke, but then has some lager elements, with a bready and yeasty finish and effect on the body. Smooth and very drinkable, will be perfect for fall evenings.

Poured from the 11.2 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip pint.

a: Clear deep ruby with an inch and a half offwhite head which slowly receded to rocky surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Caramel malt and ripe light fruit. Later some spice notes creep in. Scottish heather?

t: Caramel malt up front with slight fruit notes, followed by a moderate hop bite and some smoke notes.

m: Medium, good body, lots of carbonation tingle.

o: A very fine Scotch ale, tasty and highly drinkable.

330 ml bottle purchased as part of the Merry Craftmas holiday pack. Served cool into a tulip.

Appearance - Pretty much the darkest shade of mahogany every. A small thin layer of foam rests on top and dissipates quick. Some clarity but hard to see since the base beer is so dark.

Smell - Oodles of butterscotch and toffee. Some molasses. A malt bomb if there ever was one. Super inviting on a cool halloween night.

Taste - Lots of toffee and butterscotch again, like a decadent dessert. Mild bitterness and a slight wood toasted characteristic. Maybe trace amounts of vanilla. Butterscotch rules though.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and thin bodied yet syrupy in the way the beer clings to your lips. Carbonation is more expressive than you'd think.

Overall - The Belhaven Wee Heavy is probably the winner from this pack, the nose is fantastic and the taste isn't too far behind. Definitely one of the better representations of the style that I've had and certainly the best of this pack.

Generally a big fan of Wee Heavy. Picked this one up because I very much like the Belhaven Wee Heavy and had not see this 90/~ before, had to give it a try. Was not disappointed, this one is even better tasting, higher ABV and at an excellent cost. I am going back tomorrow to buy many more of these for the fridge. Great Wee Heavy.

The look is uninspiring. Taste is more bold than the original wee heavy. Is it better? I don't think so.
