This place is alright. The guy behind the counter seems a little pushy and the prices are way jacked up. Plus there's beers that never went into distribution on the shelves at ridiculous prices and I know my buddy bought a bomber of homebrew here too that was infected and gushed everywhere.

They have a home brew shop inside now. I took my CO2 tank inside to get filled, they over filled it and blew the safety valve on it then tried to charge me $20 to fix it. In the long run they paid to get it fixed but argued with me about how much it should cost.

I only go here when I'm desperate for homebrew supplies.

This is a must place for anyone who is on a quest for excellent beer. I am not from Califonia but if I lived there I would find a place closest to Beverages 4 Less to reside. Freddy (owner) is extremely knowledgable and helpful in providing the hard to find, most amazing beers around. friendly and fast service, selection is off the charts and the prices can not be beat!

For all the hopheads out there, like my self, they have a great selection on IPA's and many other types of Ales.

Freddy will go out of his way to help you out and find what you are looking for and keep you moving forward on you journey for great beer!

Yeah, was in here a few days ago, and he does seem to raise his prices. Very pushy like a used car salesman. Was looking for a few hard to find bottles and was pushing some more of the expensive stuff saying that he is the only one who carries them only to find out that he somehow gets them before anyone, but is cheaper anywhere else. He was rude and cocky too. Stay away from this place and go to places like BDBS or OLIVETREE or even SOBAYLIQUOR. You will save yourself a lot of money and feel good about your purchases. This place is a ripoff.

they have a very nice selection and they seem to get the rare stuff when other places dont. i got the sense that a good majority of his business is mail order...he'll ship just about anywhere

the prices he sells his beer for seem to be slightly higher than you might find at other retail locations. but it's his store and he can charge whatever he is a luxury item and if you dont like the prices, you dont have to buy anything.

he'll put stuff aside for the people he likes and he won't sell stuff to you if he doesn't like you. it's a strange operation but like i said's his store

I enjoy going to Beverages 4 Less to pick up some good beers every so often. They always have fresh and cold Alpine beers and have a good selection of rare beers. The owner Freddy might seem over bearing to some, but I really enjoy shooting the shit with him as I look through the beer and he usually hooks me up with beers I just can't find at any other bottle shop. A little pricey on some selections, but if I can't find it anywhere else I don't mind shelling out a few more bucks to get to try a new beer. Overall, another great San Diego bottle shop.

Here is my quick capsule review. I live on the east coast and searched for hours on end on the internet to no avail to find a rare beer that is only available in California(unless this is your first day on Beeradvocate, you can probably guess what it is). That all changed when I by lucky chance found Beverages4less. Fred had said beer delivered to my door in no time and the packing was terrific.
A+ customer service and a really cool dude to boot. Fred, you've got a customer for life, thank you!

I had previously rated this store at a perfect 5. However, once i realized that Freddie was not only shipping older than told Pliny to me, he was actually ripping me off as well. We made an agreement to trade 1 case of Pliny for one case of Heady topper i had access to. I can't begin to tell you how much business i have not only brought Freddie but done with him. I would say well over $6,500 worth from just quickly looking over my receipts from him. I would not only order many many beers from him usually 24 to 48 at a time, we would exchange Pliny the elder for my header topper. But the first time i received the case from him there was only 12 and he told me that is a full case/ since its 16 OZ its only 12 not 24. Thinking from what i knew that sounded a little absurd but then i decided no what "he won't lie to me" so i let it slide and believed him. After doing business with many other of my own customers, i shipped a case of Pliny to a good friend of mine who said "you only shipped me 12" i told him thats all that comes in a case. Well he informed me that he called Russian River and that 24 is a case for them. So i called Freddie and asked him about this and requested that he either send me the remainder of the cases he owes me or i would not be sending the 2 cases of header topper for the ONE case of Pliny he shipped me. He would not budge and said that we agreed on 12 Plinys for 24 Headys, which is true BECAUSE he told me that was a case. Which he knew was a lie and had pulled one over on me. I felt horrible about not sending him the heady topper (even though i have sent him at least 14 cases of header topper which he sells through his online beer business at $12 a can, for a lousy 7 cases of pliny at $7.99 a piece w/o shipping) Long story short he never would make up for lying/ purposely mis informing me about the true quantity of a Pliny case, he then called me daily for about a month and then monthly still to this day, has been about a year. All he had to do was make it right or at least act like he was by sending me a case or two. He then tried to charge my credit card i had used to make previous purchases through him for $174 for the one case of PLINY he sent me for the TWO cases of Heady topper. However, I had to get a new card (thanks hackers of Target) and he informed me he was charging my card now because i didn't send him his cases. I thought he was a stand up guy and had no doubt he would make this right once i brought it to his attention, but no he didn't. So therefore, he lost my business completely and a few friends of mine. Also I wrote this statement below because he called and told me a former employee was making lies up about him. so i wrote a good review about him because i felt he deserved it. well now his true colors have shown and i completely retract my previous review. I did however leave it up so you can see how quickly it went from being a great guy to deal with to the review i have just written. however he does have a great selection and rare beers. UPDATE... Just received a text message from Freddie " thanks for the review low life" if you would like me to send you a picture of this text message, message me! I am going to create a link however that you can click on to see the text message also.

Where do I start?? The beers...Alpine, Stone, Lost Abbey, Alesmith, Green Flash, Ballast Point, ect...Some of the beers are cold and other are just shelved. I always question warm beer...unless it's very fresh. However, I picked up a few that were warm and all drank well! Fred was a great help and pointed us to everything we needed and then some. We were able to pick a few things that you couldn't find anywhere. They also had a good selection of liquor if that is your thing. It was a little bit out of our way but well worth the trip! Thanks again Fred!!

it is obvious when someone really loves beer. someone who doesn't horde. or doesn't allow one person to buy out the whole supply of something. when he wants everyone to at least get a taste. this person is fred. the guy is a champ. a nice little bottle shop in santee. with a wide variety of harder to find and good old favorites ranging from alesmith decadence to pure hoppiness from alpine freddy even had a few bottles of gift of the magi from last year. with the amazing customer service i will definitely be making the trip down again.

Found my way in here today to look for a bottle of something rare and boy did I find more than a bottle. This is the best place I have found in San Diego. The selection is remarkable. Not only do they have most everything you could want for this year, you can find past years as well. Freddy the owner is a remarkable man who really knows beer. But better than knowing beer, he knows people. There are just not alot of beer stores where the owner himself is willing to open a beer because you a sheepish about buying it. He would rather spend the money so that you know what you're missing or getting into. Networking is his thing and he is remarkable at it. This place is a true "diamond in the rough" and should be the first stop of every visiter looking for a great beer store and should be the only stop of those that live in the area!

Basically, it looks like any other strip mall liquor store in Southern California. Then you go inside and above the refrigerator is a shelf with Black Tuesday, KBS, Dark Lord, etc. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I asked the guy behind the counter whether those bottle on the shelf were for sale. He said it depends on which bottles you were trying to get. Of course I ask about the Black Tuesday and Dark Lord which were not up for grabs. He starts asking me about which beers on the shelf I haven't tried. I pointed out Ballast Point Sea Monster, he pulled it off the shelf and cracked it open and poured me and my friend Charles a taste. This man is Freddy, he owns the place, he LOVES beer, and loves to meet beer geeks. I ended up dropping $130 and my haul included a couple fresh PtE's (which at the time were pretty hard to come by), an Alpine Ned and Madarin Nectar, and.... wait for it... a Veritas 007!!!! I missed that release and was happy to pay $75 for a bottle. At first Freddy wasn't sure he wanted to sell it to me at all, because he thought I would give him a negative review on beeradvocate since it was $75. Considering that they go on the bay for $150 easily, I thought it was a very reasonable price. Everything else there was priced reasonably as well. Some things were marked up a dollar or two more than other places, but that's usually only on the rarer stuff. Freddy also had both the Ballast Point gin and rum. I was gonna buy the rum until he showed me the Veritas he had in the back. Basically this place is awesome, a must visit if you are in the area. Get there before 4 o'clock so that you can meet Freddy, and chat about beer/ask about what he's got in the back. Also, check out the website. He ships beer.

Illegal beers sales, improperly stored IPAs, hassling used-car-salesman attitude, price discrimination, fake reviews, I can go on-and-on about how terrible this place is.

To elaborate:
As of today (July 12, 2011) the website lists "Three Floyd's Dreadnayght" [sic] & "Arltil Panzer Walf" [sic] as well as Bell's Expedition Stout, and Double Trouble. All of which are not distributed into California, and therefore, ARE NOT LEGAL TO SELL IN THIS STATE. And another time it was $9.99 for a single bottle of Founders Breakfast Stout (also illegal to sell in CA). He said, "It's $25 for a 4-pack of this stuff. And I'm the only person in California that sells it." No kidding. You're probably also the only person in California taking advantage of locals and non-locals alike by selling beers illegally through your store. BTW the stuff retails for $9-12 for a 4-pack.

As a former local customer I only bought IPAs from the refrigerator, not from the humongous stack of IPAs sitting in the middle of his store at 90*F+ temperatures (this is Santee, one of the warmest places in the entire county). Alpine, Ballast Point, Stone, etc., are all just sitting there ready for unknowing online customers to purchase. Not to mention seeing his minions at brewery-only releases buying their allotments and reselling them at his store to "online customers only" at absurd markups (Veritas 009 for $75+ a bottle!!).

Take one step into the store and get immediately hassled by Freddy, the owner. "What are you looking for?" "I get beers that no one else can get." "Look me up on BeerAdvocate - they all love me - they all know Freddy is the shit." This is not a dramatic reenactment.

Regarding the price discrimination, I have experienced it firsthand. He charged me $3 less for a bottle of a particular limited release beer than he charged my wife for the same bottle. Just read the other reviews, too.

How many of these reviews can possibly be real? Just look at how many people join the site, review Bev4Less the same day and never contribute anything else to the site, let alone even log on after that.

The selection is pretty damn good, considering the illegal beer sales and brewery-only-release muling. However, it's all more expensive than most other stores around the county.

I used to keep quiet and simply choose not to shop here anymore, but now I am just appalled by the practices at this store. It's time to let people know about this shady place. Its a good thing the ABC doesn't come in here and audit his sales to see that he's illegally selling beers that aren't distributed into California. But then again, how do we expect him to pay for the 7 series beemer out front?

Bottom line: Avoid at all costs.

I just did my first mail order with Beverage 4 Less. Fred was very helpful and willing to please. I am extremely happy with his service. The selection of beer was very good and the beer list on the website is up to date. Beverages 4 Less seems to have an "inside track" to some of the more rare beer releases.

The beer was professionally packaged and shipped. It arrived within a matter of days

Beverages 4 Less is a great place to look for those hard to find West Coast beers. I will be ordering again soon.

Thanks, Fred!

So I went down to Lost Abbey to pick up my oldER viscosity bourbon barrel for homebrewing and my buddy told me that I had to stop by here to check out their beer selection. I stopped by on a Friday and Fred had a few beers open for customers to check out.

First off I had emailed the owner, Fred a few times about a certain beer and he was responsive. When I finally met him for the first time he made me feel like a regular customer - we shared a few beers and he directed me toward some beers that I had never had before, but needed to try. One of those was Velvet Glove by Iron Fist, which was totally awesome. It was pretty cool. I ended up hanging out there for a while and met a few other people.

Fred's selection of Alpine was amazing. Overall, I'd recommend this place to anyone in the area as the selection was superb and the prices were fair.

Hopefully some day I can get in the cooler to see what treasures are hiding in the back!

Freddy and his helpers are always willing to go the extra mile in order to help out a regular customer. They pay close attention to those who frequent their store and it pays dividend's when you do.
Every Friday they are willing to crack a couple bottles of their new shipments and let you try it out. I know this is not common practice, but it really helps when you are looking for something different and don't know if you want to spend the $5-$7 dollars for that bomber.
The store has a large selection of craft beers but most are very over priced for what you get. I don't recommended buying your locals here as they are price gauging the local customers....It's really unfortunate as this is a great beer store ran by greedy people who are just looking to make a quick buck on the mis-guided, uninformed joe smoe off the street.
The only positive I can say about this establishment is that they also sell brewing supplies and can come in handy in a bind if you live in East County. They do sell their products quickly, so you get fresh brewing supplies.

Bought on line so some of the above criteria don't apply. A 1st rate on line store, has rare stuff and most brews anyone could possibly want. Great service, prompt delivery, fresh beer as promised. This is an A+ on line operation, that I will do business again with, I'd also recommend to friends. Try for yourself and don't fall to the negative whispering, that's the best way to judge. Bring from NC I get get brews I've only read about, and IMO buying online is easier and more cost effective than trading $4$.

I've read the reviews and now I've placed an order and received the merchandise. I've tried to be objective, critical, and fair so let me break it down.

Atmosphere - Just rating the online experience. Not the prettiest website but it was cool that it showed many of the beers that are in stock. It was not a gimmick as I called for a couple of specific items and he indeed had them.

Quality - I'm dinging this category a little. A 3.5 is still above average, by the way. But, I was a little critical because some other reviewers mentioned that some beer styles were not properly stored and that there were bottles covered in dust.

When I received my package, which was excellently packed (although it should be since I paid $12 for packaging materials), I did note that several bottles had a gunkiness - that sort of gunk you get when something has been covered with dust and other atmospheric elements for some period of time. This gives me some pause about the storage.

Service - The service was spectacular. Freddy took my call right away, was friendly and helpful. He was responsive and moved quick on the order. Yes, it's in his best interest and he's motivated to make the sale, but that's what's supposed to happen. Too many people in customer service act like they don't need your business or care for it, drag their feet answering questions or responding, etc.

Freddy got me a Fed Ex tracking number by email within an hour of my placing the order. I received the package the next day.

This was a phenomenal customer service experience that can't be improved on much. 5 out of 5 on this.

Selection - Freddy has his hands on some good stuff. I personally didn't see anything that he "shouldn't have" as some other BA's allege. I'll divulge my haul below - perhaps not a bewildering selection, but you can get some interesting stuff.

Value - This one is interesting. Here is what I received:

1 Dogfish Head Red & White - 750mL
2 Ovila Dubbel - 750 mL
1 Stone Imperial Russian Stout (1 year old) - 22 oz.
1 Lost Abbey 10 Commandments - 750 mL
2 Russian River Salvation - 375 mL
1 Sculpin IPA - 22 oz. (curious how this one will hold up given recent questions about Sculpin's freshness and the storage problems for IPAs cited in other reviews - I'll try to remember to update after I crack this one open)
1 Abacus - 650 mL
1 Lost Abbey Angel's Share - 375mL
1 Karl Strauss 22nd Anniversary Vanilla Imperial Stout - 22 oz.
1 Karl Strauss Parrot in a Palm Tree Baltic Porter - 22 oz.

Beer = $151.25
Packing = $12.00
Shipping = $28.88
TOTAL = $192.13

Some reviewers stated that Freddy was charging more per bottle to online customers. That may be the case, but that would mean that Freddy was putting price tags to match his online price on my bottles. Seems like a little bit of work, but maybe. It would be nice if Freddy posted his pricing on his site.

Based on some of the pricing, I am inclined to say his prices were a little high. However, I am a subscriber to the philosophy: "cheat me in the price, not in the goods." He did get me access to some nice bottles, some of which are tougher to find so there may be some premium in that.

By my recalculations, for this haul, including CA sales tax and CRV I would have expected to pay about $130. So a little additional markup of about $1.75 per bottle on average.

Example: Ovila price was $13.99; I have seen it advertised for $10.99 elsewhere. The Salvation was $6.49 - I have seen it for closer to $5.

However, the shipping seemed low by about $20. We're talking about shipping about 25 pounds of beer and packaging, Fed Ex, next day afternoon delivery for $29. That seems like a good value to me.

The packaging was expensive - $12; however, it was good quality and I will be reusing it in beer trades in the future.

There are some lingering questions about bottle storage and pricing. However, there might be items in Freddy's selection that you have trouble finding anywhere else and the service is exceptional.

I think this is a decent place to shop for the savvy beer buyer that follows these rules:

1) Ask about the price you're paying for each bottle. If you feel it is high, check around and see if you can get it somewhere else for less. Decide from there if you still want to get it from Freddy.
2) If you're concerned about it for a particular brew, ask about the age and storage location of bottles.
3) Don't let yourself get pressured. If you're not comfortable with anything, don't execute the purchase.

I will be checking up on Freddy's stock in the future and would order from him again, observing the above rules. He's also someone I'll give a call or check on the site if I'm trying to track down a particular bottle and can't get it through my usual avenues. That's why I went to him in the first place and I'm sure we'll do business again in the future.

I've been coming to Beverages 4less for about a year now! Very great selection of rare beers! The freshest Pliney in the bottle in town. I'm very picky about the bottle dates on that beer. One of my favorites. Freddy is very helpful with finding and ordering me beers he didn't have that I was looking for. He's got some Rougue VooDoo Maple Bacon Ale coming in and Freddy is cool enough to reserve a couple bottles for me so if I don't get there in time, I won't miss out on this limited production beer! Not only that but his price is better that other stores in San Diego. Every few months the owner Freddy generously has a BBQ for his customers! Great food and for free! How can ya not like that? This place rocks!

Just visited San Diego for the first time last week and I made this my go-to bottle shop based on the reviews here and wasn't disappointed!

I don't know the market very well or what the competition's shelves look like, but I'd imagine this place probably has one of the better selections in SD.

What went above and beyond for me was the owner, Freddy. I love places that offer good customer service and he delivered. He greeted me as soon as I entered the door, when there were a couple people in there, he was offering samples of a beer he was excited about and helped me out with the local selections.

It looks like a high volume shop which is great for the freshness of the selection. I bought almost entirely IPAs (hey, I was in Cali...when in Rome right?) and they all were nice and fresh.

One key thing is that if you want the hard to find selection, you have to ask about it. He keeps the limited release beers in the back. Also if you are looking for Pliny, just ask when he's getting it in. It moves quickly, but he seems to get a weekly delivery of it and you just have to swing by then.

Not a local so I haven't been in the shop but have had no issues in dealing with them. Purchase was made, products were sent, well packaged and in timely fashion. Even changed my order and they were a great help. Prices are a bit higher but for someone on the other side of the country it is great to able to have access to this stuff so what's a couple bucks? Deducted points in "vibe" cause you can't order certain things without spending more on other stuff. The service as I said was great

update - January 10, 2011
Been going here two years. My review still stands! Getting to know the staff and sharing adventures and beer stories has made me feel like a regular, but they treat everyone the same!
It's Freddy's knowledge and customer service, and the awesome inventory that keeps me coming back!
If you read the reviews, you know there's nothing bad about this place, other than he moves alot of beer, and alot of it is stuff you cant find alot of other places! I travel the world for business, and I search out new and interesting beers wherever I go, and its always a pleasure coming home and finding alot of those "rare" or 'special' beers here!
The only reviews that arent A+ are from those who dont know what they want!
Come see Freddy, learn a little and expand your horizons!

Lets just say that I have not seen anything like Freddie's stock anywhere in San Diego, let alone most of California.
Freddie is the real deal. He has stock that you cant find anywhere else in So. Cal, unless you have a special connection to relative.
I happened into his place a few months ago on a local brewery recommendation (Alpine Brewery). Holy cow. Not sure about some of the previous reviews, but they should stop drinking the good stuff and go back to the crap they are used to.
If you know great beer, you know Freddie is the real deal. Who else, upon chatting with for 30 minutes about the So cal. brewery scene and people we had in common from local breweries, would crack open a new $15 special edition Mirror Mirror and let me taste it!!
Says alot for a guy who some label as "overpriced" ( you know who you are - go back to PB and drink some swill!)
Have been back many times, always able to get the hard to find items I want and will keep going back because he is the place to go for great beer!!!
If you have a chance to visit San Diego, make this one of the places you go to visit, right after O'briens!

Selection is over the top. Great customer service. Owner opened and shared a couple rare gems for a 1st time customer. Very nice. Nice brews kept in the cooler. More Alpine beers I've ever seen in 1 place. Super fresh Pliny. Lots of rare stuff in stock and at prices that were pretty good considering the inventory and the amount of stock that is held back that the owner pulls out of the back and has to sell. Costs a lot to keep that much inventory and they are basically cellaring it for you in many cases. Thought it was "to far" but it was right off the 125 so not bad at all. Supports the local brewerys to the extreme which for me is a good quality in a local beer shop. Maybe under rating the shop but I've only been once.

I gotta say, Freddy over at Beverages 4 less owns and runs one of the most exceptional beer stores that ive been to. he is not the biggest of them all but his selection, prices, and especially his service is incomparable. I come down to SD from LA to visit a friend and every time i come i make it a point to hit up this store. Freddy will even go to the lengths of trading his other customers and beer buddies for rare and hard to find beers for you to try. I always enjoy having a chat with him and kicking back in the store for a bit of time. Sometimes he even cracks open something special for you to try. Go check it out!!!

This was my first stop after coming in to San Diego for a week of vacation. Absolutely one of the finest beer stores I have ever been to. The owner was extremely friendly and welcoming to me as well as being very knowledgeable about all things beer. I ended up spending almost an hour just talking and browsing the shelves. The selection of west coast beers was top-notch and I was able to find everything I was looking for. They also provide kegs and jockey boxes, CO2. Basically anything you need that is beer-related this is the place. Highly recommended!

I have gone here several times now. They have a much better selection of semi-rarities/rarities then say, BevMo! for instance. The service is top-notch and everyone is very friendly.

Also a convenient location for me as it is just a couple miles away from my work. It looks like an average liquor store from the outside, but inside you will see half the store(and fridges) are dedicated to great beer.

They also keep on top of new releases efficiently. Its not the biggest shop, but I could easily spend 30 minutes in here with the selection and the good company.
