Notes / Commercial Description:
We initially released BORIS The Crusher Oatmeal-Imperial Stout when we first opened our brewery's doors over 8 years ago, and it instantly became our biggest seller. Didn't know this existed until it was offered to me in a trade, but I love reg, BA, and Royale (van wink was not as good and over hyped) so I thought I'd give it a try. I haven't had BA BORIS in a couple years, but comparing it to memory it's just as awesome, but not more awesome. BA BORIS is great, so this is not a negative review, but idk if the extra barrel treatment did much.

EDIT: After letting it warm to room temp (currently 80°F) I think there is more barrel, but not more bourbon.

I wasn't sold that aging BA BORIS that much longer would improve it that much but I was wrong. The aroma is fantastic and the mouthfeel was spot on. Definitely not boozy.

This was bought at the brewery and consumed within 3 days.

A: Pours jet black as most of the BORIS line does. Very little carbonation.
S: Heaps and heaps of bourbon and vanilla. Maybe some light tobacco smells to it as well.
T: It's unfair to have to compare this to the BORIS Van Wink which I found to be fantastic and drank prior, but this is a damn tasty brew. Plenty of bourbon and vanilla to be found. There might also be some toffee lurking down there as well. It starts off on the sweet side but then a little bitter roast (coffee-like) shows up to balance it out.
M: This is in my wheelhouse. It's thick and rich and really seems like it should be a higher ABV, not to say that it's hot or anything, but it drinks like much richer and decadent stouts out there.

Overall: This is one of my first "true" reviews but I was greatly impressed by this beer. It won't compete with beers like BCBS et al, but considering Ohio has the 12% ABV max rule, it's nice to see that they're producing drinkable beers under 10% that taste so damn good. Definitely worth seeking out, as I think it's a vast improvement over the regular BORIS and standard barrel aged BORIS.

Pours with some viscosity, generating a few inches of mocha head. Modest retention. Smell is nougat, roast malts, chocolate, oak, bourbon sans heat, demerara sugar. But taste definitely skews less in the sweet direction and more in the roasted malt and barrel. Incredibly smooth, balanced ... benefits from sipping and contemplation but it's so damned easy to drink you'll find the bottle disappears quickly. Was that really 22 ounces?!? Full bodied - though, at under 10%, don't expect sludge - with no heat from the extended aging.

In the ever escalating ABV games, it's refreshing to find a barrel aged stout of this quality coming in at under 10%.

Bottle poured into a Bourbon County snifter glass at 48 degrees.

A: Pours pitch black with a thin line of khaki head that reduces fairly quickly and leaves a tiny collar. Viscosity appears much thicker than what I would expect for 9.4% abv.
S: Bourbon, lots and lots of bourbon. A fair amount of chocolate and dark malts coming through as well. As it warms up, the bourbon stays in the lead and starts to overtake everything else even more.
T: The bourbon, while very present, doesn't overpower as much as I had anticipated given the aroma. Chocolate notes make it through very nicely, as well as a roast and dark malt profile.
M: Feel is very thick with a low level of carbs. Leaves a rich aftertaste which lingers with the heat of bourbon.
O: As a fan of bourbon, I really enjoyed this one. The 5 times longer in the barrel really comes through and does this one well.
