22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Had 7/8/17.

Pours dark and opaque, with a half inch head of darker foam and a fair amount of foamy lacing. Smells of whiskey, malt, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, molasses, raisins, some oak. Great aroma. The taste is also whiskey first, then malt, caramel, chocolate, oak, molasses, light licorice. Some alcohol and a light bitterness throughout. The flavor is as good as the aroma. Mostly smooth, a good full body, well carbonated.

The whiskey barrels are the star, and demand your attention. Still, there’s a good balance with the base beer. Strong flavor and aroma, if straightforward. Glad I had a chance to get this.

Black color with dark brown head. Aroma has nice chocolate malts and caramel with some bourbon in the background. Taste is smooth, fudgy, chocolatey with brownies and cake flavors. Really well balanced, slightly bitter on the finish with cacao and dark chocolate. Medium to full bodied, really smooth on the palate. Overall it's a really well balanced imperial stout with rounded flavors.

Pours an effervescent ebony with a sliver of cocoa colored head. Not really much head retention & lacing

S: Barrel, booze, vanilla. Full whiskey flourish at the end

T: Dryness, peat, oakyness, a little charred grain & faint chocolate and vanilla up front. Baker's Chocolate, dryness, charred grain , a little peat as this warms, a little vanilla also, some caramel in the mix. Finishes oaky dry, some charred grain notes, some molasess sweetness lingering on the edges, just a little vanilla

MF: Fairly subtle carbonation, medium body, thickens up as this warms

Tasty, pricey, not exactly a shock from these guys. Still wil ltry damn near anything they make

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass.

Slightly inky presence, but with a dark walnut nearly black body. Faint hints of head creation, and very impressively dark mocha in color, but doesn't really get there. Manages a solid good fine pencil collar, slightly taller too, and also very dark which is impressive. Empty top.

Aroma is big. Large amounts of thick molasses and roast. Hints nearly husky but with a thicker body. Sticky sensing with little sensing nuances though but a big powerful rush to the nose. Faint touches of chocolate but is more milky than dark. Very nice.

Palate is exquisite and varied. Rich chocolate darkness hits first, with almost tart raspberry hinting in the back (there is no infection not even close so stop panicking). Rich mikes of ganache and gooey tasting dark chocolate mixing with molasses. A surprising sharp almost hop bite hits on the tongue, and a surprising full rounded really front palate, as the finish is nearly airy, not coating, and sort of non-existent. All this delicious power is just right up in front of the palate. Silky faint tones, but an airy grain and dryness makes it feel the beer evaporates right off the swallow.

What a unique pleasure and contrast. This one is a fun one in the barrel aged stout realm.

I had this on draft side by side with Rocky Mountain BORIS.

This is black with practically no head. Considering DORIS is the base brew, this is the first time I've ever seen it suppressed in this way. Usually DORIS has a massive, really dark tan head that is super thick, even after other sorts of barrel treatments.

The flavors and aromas of the base stout here still hold up quite while to the whiskey barrels compared to BORIS. This version displays woodier aromas, and in flavor, is far nuttier, with much bigger chocolatey, almost fudgy elements, with a sort of spice and black licorice arising in the background. This has a very dry finish compared to the BORIS version.

Two other completely shocking results came out of these barrels in that it is less boozy yet somehow less frothy than the BORIS version, showing you never know what's going to happen when you put beer in a liquor barrel.

It's well known among those that know me that I'm not a huge fan of bourbon or whiskey barrel aged beers, but I prefer this over the BORIS version due to how well the aromas and flavors hold up to the barrel, even developing new characteristics, especially on the flavor front.

Pours black with a finger of caramel foam. Head retention is fair. Aroma is roasted, toasted, and caramel malts. A little whiskey with a touch of heat follow it up. Caramel is present as well. Flavor profile is roasted and toasted malts with a background of oats, caramel, and toffee. Whiskey is present, but kept in check, just adding a little extra complexity to the flavor profile. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a velvety, fuzzy texture. Overall, a good stout with a kiss of whiskey. Nice depth and complexity. Dropped overall score 0.25 for lack of bottling date.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.

Hoppin' Frog Rocky Mountain D.O.R.I.S., 10.5% ABV, 70 IBU. Pours thick and black, with a one finger brown head. Nose is bourbon, roasted malt, and chocolate, taste follows with the bourbon out front, some sweetness, and only slight bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. I can't help but compare this to the Hoppin' Frog Extended BA B.O.R.I.S. I had last weekend. That was slightly better than this one, but both outstanding.

Pours a motor oil black with a light brown head that has a little staying power and laces the glass. Aroma is smokey and sweet, there were some vanilla, cocoa and marshmallow notes.

In the taste this beer is roasted malt and smoke forward but not overly done. Vanilla, marshmallow, dark chocolate and mocha coffee flavors are there midway and it finishes with robust notes of malt and oak.

Full bodied and silky smooth with a medium carbonation level.

Sampled at the brewery, this was the best stout on tap in terms of depth of flavor. World class.

A - Pitch black pour with a creamy toffee colored, dense lacing.

S - Dark chocolate, cocoa, milk chocolate, light smoke, vanilla, and bourbon.

T - Dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, lots of bourbon, a little heavy on the oak tannin, boozy. Lingering chocolate bourbon and alcohol.

M - Medium body to big medium body. Dry finish with lingering chocolate and bourbon.

O - Worth the price.
