This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.

This smells like rich espresso, dark bitter chocolate, roast, smoke, caramel, and a touch of booze.

I'm not going to pretend like I can't detect the booze in this one - it's super high ABV. However, the booze is not as strongly evident as you'd really expect. There's loads of dark chocolate and roasty espresso/coffee type flavors, with some caramel, a strapping leathery and nutty character, and a big hop bitterness. It's not quite as sweet as I would have expected, given the heavy duty ABV here.

This is way more drinkable than it has any right being, with a nice creaminess, and very little booze burn on the back end.

I'm somehow always still surprised when I really enjoy a Hoppin' Frog beer - their stouts are still of the some things out there.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a collar of mocha-colored bubbles around the edge of the glass and some wispy lacing on the surface - both of these completely faded away.
S: Moderate aromas of black licorice are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of black licorice and burnt malts with hints of dark malts and chocolate. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness. The flavors of burnt malts stand out and linger into the finish, making this taste a bit like tobacco.
M: It feels full-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some dryness in the finish.
O: You can tell that this beer is quite strong from all of the malts in the taste, but it does well at hiding some of the alcohol from the taste. The oats also help out in lightening up the body a bit.

Love this series, but this entry is the "one step too far" for me. Appearance is still a wonderful tar black with brown highlighting and ring. Smell and taste however are evidence for my claim: heavy cocoa, huge booze, licorice, leather and earthy coffee grounds star, licorice gains as it warms, pungent raisin, smoke and anise. It's good, but any semblance of nuance and balance is gone. Feel is heavy, smoky, boozy, and surprisingly leathery.

Stark black with an angrily roiling burnt mocha head that dies more quickly than its older siblings, leaving wobbly lacing behind.

This exhibits a pretty stellar marriage of ultra roast and mature booze. It's like mocha liqueur and cacao extract, reduced to a viscous but fine silky fluid that's a little sticky and warming, but ultimately comes to a semi-dry finish. The signature Hoppin' Frog nuttiness is lesser and finer here, while notes of dark roasted cacao-like malt are amped up.
