Poured from 22oz bottle. Many thanks go out to brokenleadedcask aka Darren for this beauty. Review from notes a couple months ago...gotta play catch up!

A- Pours a black color which no light goes through when held up to the light. Nice 2 1/2 finger tannish/mocha colored head that sticks around for a little bit. Nice light lacing left all over the glass during the beer.

S- There is a nice bourbon barrel scent to this. You really do pick up on the oak and bourbon both nicely. Nice big notes of coffee and roasted malts in the front of the nose. Chocolate and darker fruit bring up the backbone of aroma along with a light hopping. Overall this is a big beer smell but nothing too overbearing.

T- Big bourbon notes right off the bat with this beer. I wasn't expecting it and it was a nice surprise. Nice chocolate and coffee notes come along with the bourbon mixing well on the palate and stay there throughout the entire sip. roasted malts come into play but I thought they would be more than what they were. A light vanilla note come and goes with this beer in the backend of it I thought. A very nice complex but simple taste.

M- Heavy mouthfeel. Carbonation is good with this beer as in light for it being barrel aged. Big roasted malts and light chocolate hints with light bourbon notes are left on the palate long after the sip. Aftertaste has a nice roasted malt with touch of bourbon. Nice chewy beer.

D- This is a very drinkable beer that is good to split with a friend. Unless you are me and just want to drink it all yourself. After one bomber though it is nice to move onto something else. Would recommend this one to anyone who is a stout lover. Also this one would be a good beer to stick away in the cellar for years to come.

A: Black as black can be. Nice creamy coffee colored head on the top.

S: Huge chocolate, bourbon and oak. A bit of a bite from the alcohol. Smells really nice to me.

T: Drumroll please... Yowser. Smack in the face! Big Bourbon and oak flavor up front. Then comes a strong vanilla flavor, and it ends with a nice toasted malt flavor with just a hint of smoke. As this warms the smokey oak really comes out.

M: Creamy and smooth, just a little bite from the alcohol. Very nice.

D: Oh yes. Anytime.. tastes great and is creamy smooth. Definitely something I would drink again. Very nice beer.

A normal pour yielded a black liquid with a 3 finger head of tan foam that threatened to go above and beyond the lip of the glass but it didn't.

Smell wise, I'm getting strong notes of roasted malt, some sweetish fruity tones, good chocolate and coffee aromas, and a nice light nose of the barrel aging. A very nice, not too strong nose that pleases me.

First sips in and the roasted malt comes with a light graininess, nice chocolate of the sweet kind coffee bringing some bitterness, a little bit of a fruity(black cherries?) character that's very faint but there, and a light but right presence of Bourbon that is growing a bit after a few more sips. Very tasty.

It's close to full bodied with a lightish amount of carbonation. A very smooth mouthfeel overall.

Drinkability? This certainly is drinkable enough because of the taste and mouthfeel and the alcohol is pretty well hidden. A nice twist on the regular B.O.R.I.S and I like them both very much. A very nice brew!

bomber split with my best friend while he was home for christmas..batch two

a-pitch light penetration and no head...little khaki lacing on top of the beer....small tight clollar on the bubbles in my glass but his had them stuck to the sides

s-sweet whisky and chocolate..roasted coffee and slight toffee...

t-roasty malt up front..some bitter coffee rushes in before the whisky really takes hold...whisky dominates in the middles and pulls out just as the bitter coffee comes back in and a bit tannic...finishes dry

m-creamy smooth from the oats...a little boozy...warms the mouth and the tummy when it goes down....almost chewy but not quite...carb is good for a barrel aged brew...

d-could split a couple bombers of this in a night and not feel bad...the booziness is a little distracting but overall this is quite a brew

nicely done and not over the top...the oatmeal aspect i find interesting with the barrel aging...a true winner imo

Purchased from the brewery about 2 weeks ago. (The brewery is a little hard to find, its on the south side of Waterloo, within a stones throw of the Hobby store.)

Look: Poured about 12 oz from the bomber into my favorite stout glass. Dark as night with a milk chocolate foam on top, about 1/2 inch. The foam dissipates in a minute or so.

Smell: A few quick sniffs and you're treated to a collection of: bourbon, chocolate, and expresso. This is going to be good. There is a whiff of something sweet, almost fruity that seems out of place.

Taste: The smell of bourbon dominates your first taste so you're thinking bourbon for the first few seconds. Then the dark chocolate kicks in and stays there for the remainder of the first sip. It covers the palate well with chocolate, you can still taste it minutes after your first sip. A few more sips and you really start to experience the blending of charcoal-bourbon, chocolate and some hints of coffee. It has a nice balance.

Mouthfeel: Like I said, covers the palate well. Not overly carbonated. Swish it around like a single-barrel bourbon.

Drinkability: Its a great beer to sip during and after a good meal. Serve with a small quantity of red meat. This would make a nice dessert beer in small quantities after a hearty meal.

This is a handcrafted stout from one of the masters. I really enjoyed this beer's flavors.

22 oz bottle poured into a flute glass, shared with two other BA's.

A - Pours oil slick black, one of the most viscous beers I've ever seen. Leaves about a 1/2 inch head which recedes to almost nothing. Little lacing.

S - This is my only knock on this beer. Oh, the roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, oak, vanilla, and bourbon are here but also an odd twang. Note sure if it may be the citrus hops clashing with the bourbon but whatever it is seems out of place.

T - Everything you loved about the Version 1 plus bourbon! Big times notes of vanilla and oak make this extremely smooth even with a big bourbon presence.

M - Medium to heavy bodied, slightly chewy and very rich. This differs from the regular B.O.R.I.S. in that the vanilla and oak tend to wash over your mouth not leaving alot of burnt oats.

D - This is without a doubt a sipper but high drinkability for being 10% and bourbon laden. Everything is extremely robust without being abrasive in any element. Pretty upset I shared this with other people.

A: Pours black as night with a nice (but small) tan head. Very little lacing.

S: Bourbon, vanilla, oak, light hints of chocolate, and subtle booze. Wonderful!

T: Bourbon, oak, burnt coffee, and bitter dark chocolate. Good amount of warming alcohol as well. Not quite as complex as I was hoping, but quite tasty nonetheless.

M: Full bodied, thick and chewy. It's pretty hot from the alcohol as well. Not a ton of carbonation.

D: Reminded me of Black Tuesday in many ways, but isn't quite as good. BT is the best IMO, though, so that shouldn't be held against the barrel aged BORIS. This is a great bourbon barrel aged stout and I'm thrilled I had the chance to taste it.

A - Pours very dark brown with no head whatsoever. You can hold this up to a spotlight and see nothing through it.

S - Stout + Bourbon + Stout...and then some bourbon. That about sums it up.

T - Fantastic barrel aged stout with lots of dark thick rich coffee and malt, with the bonus of mouth filling whiskey. Rich, thick, and a real mouth filler

M/D - Mouthfeel is creamy, rich, but also strong and hearty. THis is as drinkable as 10% barrel aged stouts get, it's still a slow sipper that the taste character continues to come out as the beer warms up.

22oz bomber purchased for $15.99 at DeCiccio's in Ardsley, NY.

Appearance: Opaque brown black oil slick with a brownish slightly grape 1 finger rocky foam head that dissipates quickly and leaves mild amounts of lacing.

Smell: Mainly whisky barrel over roasted coffee with some caramelish sweetness and oats.

Taste: Over roasted malts couple with some chocolate bitterness and coffee flavor. Oatmeal is a bit masked compared to the non-BA version. The whisky barrel adds a touch of heat and a sweet tinge that really "awakens" this RIS.

Mouthfeel: The oats really add silky smooth softness to this brew that I find very enjoyable. Honestly this RIS has one of the better mouthfeels for the style in my humble opinion.

Drinkability: Very drinkable for the style.

Appearance - A beautiful dark pour that leaves a fluffy, tan, creamy ring of head around the glass. Leaves little lacing upon sitting.
Smell - The barrel aging is apparent, with hints of sweet, roasted coffee, and a light hop aroma to finish it off.
Taste - Again an initial hit of the wood barrels, followed by the roasted coffee, as the sweet sugary flavors come out right in your face. The finish is a fantastic combination of the woody, roasted flavors and the sweet creaminess.
Mouthfeel - The creamy texture of the stout is slightly lighter due to the barrel aging, with appropriate levels of carbonation.
Drinkability - The weakest asset of this beer, due mostly to the harder woody, bourbon flavors brought out due to aging.

Overall I loved this beer, one of the best OIS I have had in a long time. However, with some aging the balance in flavors will have a chance to settle to complete awesomeness!

A big thanks to Matt from Capones who kept a bottle of this stashed away for me until I could make my way down to Norristown. Shared this beer with some friends at a holiday party.

Appearance: A deep, dark black colored brew. No chance of any light getting through this bad boy. There is a nice inch worth of thick, fluffy, light chocolate/mocha colored head. The head faded a bit quickly, and there wasn't much lacing to speak of. On swirling the beer in the glass, it seemed to want to stick to the sides. This is going to be good.

Smell: Strong, not a beer for the faint of heart. Plenty of chocolate and roasted malt, but also a big dose of booziness. This beer does have a fairly high ABV, and it was aged in whiskey barrels, so I guess that this smell should be expected.

Taste: This is a sippin beer. The chocolate and roasted malts from the nose is dwarfed by the strong taste of what reminds me of whiskey burn. This is one potent beverage. While not bad by any means, a bit of age would certainly mellow this brew out a bit and blend the tastes together a bit better.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation for the style with a thick, viscous, full body. Well done here.

Drinkability: For a barrel aged RIS, this beer offers a plenty of complex tastes to confound the palate. Take your time with this one and it won't come back to bite you. I have one more bottle of this, I think I'm going to keep it down in the cellar for a bit just to let it mellow out. A tasty beer fresh, it can only get better with a bit of time on it.

Batch #2, 2009 vintage, poured into nonic.

A - Pours black with a fingers worth of tan colored head. Some lacing, no retention.

S - Slight bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, toffee.

T - Same as nose...milk chocolate, malts, caramel, vanilla.

M - Full, rich and smooth, slight carbonation.

D - So smooth but I think I prefer regular BORIS.

Picked up a bottle of the most recent batch of BA Boris (green cap) at From the Vine in Columbus. My first time trying the beer but I've got another (gold cap-batch 2) aging in the cellar for later.

Appearance- Pours opaque black as per the style with a minimal ring of tan head around the edges of the glass. Appears to be very mild carbonation and little to no lacing left as I drink.

Smell- Very up front with the whiskey and oak. Lots of boozy whiskey and vanilla. A faint whiff of coffee roastiness and chocolate.

Taste- Again, the whiskey dominates here. Huge amounts of whiskey and wood are the most prominent flavors and really take up most of the flavor profile. In the background are some of the notes of bitter chocolate and roast that came through in the nose, but they are very secondary to the whiskey and wood. Astringent alcohol on the finish, and I fell as though this would benefit and round out from some aging.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Mouthfeel is pretty spot on for the style, a bit thin from the barrels but with appropriate levels of carbonation. However, in terms of drinkability for the style, I found this one to be much to far towards the side of bourbon and alcohol to get better than average marks on drinkability.

Overall, this was a beer which I feel has a lot of potential and was decent but could be much better if aged. If the alcohol and whiskey profile had a chance to settle a bit it would probably have a much more rounded flavor profile in my opinion. Will have to revisit the second bottle in the future.

Thank you Jerk44 for this wonderful brew.

A - Pours viscious Black. Very subtle light tan head that dissapears. Laces, so thats nice.

S - Smell starts off sweet. Hints of coffee come through. Smell is then a little roasty, then hints a slight hop aroma. As it warms up, the sweetness comes through more.

T - I like this. It starts off heavy in the roast. Then the sweet sugary maltyness follows. Next is a taste like a cup of joe is fresh in your face. Finish is bitter roasty.

M - perfectly carbed, just wish there was more aftertaste and wish that the mouthfeel was sticky enough to give that.

D - Damn good for the style, not perfect, I am not asking for another, but it was nice while I drank it.

O - I liked this beer. Not sure if the 9 dollar price tag is worth it with that fact that I can get a 4 pk of rasputin for less. But, It is not too shabby.

Side-by-side, it's apparent that regular BORIS is actually better. This beer gets a little drowned out by the barrel, believe it or not. Lowering my 4.5/4.5/4.5/4.5/4.5 to 4.5/4.5/4/4/4.5.

Pours jet black and thick with a small tan head and some good lacing.

Aroma is caramel, toffee, whiskey, roast, wood, and chocolate.

Flavor is similarly complex, yet balanced. All the typical imperial stout notes are in there - roast, chocolate, and coffee - as well as oak, whiskey, dark fruits, and spice. Whiskey flavor is balanced however and does not overpower like it does in some barrel-aged beers.

Very smooth and creamy palate with low carbonation and fairly full body. Not at all boozy. Excellent beer overall. A sipper, but drinkable given the style and -bal-agedness

Oil black with a creamy cascading tan head. Smell of bourbon. Bourbon hits you up front but is smoothed out amazingly quick. The oatmeal must really be smoothing things out. A slight burn on the finish but for such a high ABV it finishes smooth. Overall I enjoyed this one quite a bit. The only reason it didn't score higher is that there is nothing that really stands out. It is what it claims to be, nothing more, nothing less.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into two St. Bernardus goblets. Special thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist! Extra special thanks to FlandersNed for trading me this at DLD '09!

A: Pours black with a dark mocha colored head. Retention is ok with very little in the way of lace left behind.

S: Bourbon, pan roasted caramel, burnt malt, dark fruit, chocolate covered cherry, and caramelized sugar candy.

T: Burnt caramel (in a good way, seriously), bourbon, charred barrel, dark chocolate, and bread pudding with a caramel/maple custard glaze.

M: Slick and very slippery. Sweet and creamy. Coating. Delicious sweet finish.

D: OMG! Where is the alcohol? Some RIS's clobber you in the mouth with sweetness, booziness, bitterness...sometimes all three at once. This one shows restraint and balance and that results in perfect drinkability!

A - Pours a super rich looking black, with the slightest mahagony highlights when held up to the light. Dark khaki head that dissapates quickly.

S - Smokey, chocolte, coffee. No smell of the barrel in the nose. Slight touch of woodiness, but nothing that screams barrel aged.

T - Very well done. Tastes of coffee, toffee, dark cocoa. Lingering tastes of smoke. There is some woodiness in there, dries out the finish. Very nice. Hops are present, but not overpowering.

M - Oily but not necessarily full bodied. Would like it to be just a bit more chewy, but it is adequate. Very low carbonation, could use a tad more. The finsih is crisp and dry.

D - Overall, a very well made beer. The flavors are great, and richly layered. The nose is inviting, and the appearance is great. Just wish the mouthfeel was a bit more up to standards. Overall, I'd drink this one again, over and over, very good stuff.

A 650 mL bomber from the first batch. Thanks to Deuane for picking it up for me. Shared with janlud and ksak.

A: The stout is dark, a thick oily morass that absorbs every spectrum of visible light. Opaque? Nope, this one is a bird's eye view into the heart of darkness. Albeit a heart of darkness with a thin tan-colored head.

S: Cocoa powder, oak and vanilla drive the aroma, a soft nose that doesn't come across as overbearing. Dark malts emerge on closer inspection, smelling like a good stout.

T: The regular BORIS does its best to stand out up front, throwing out dark roasted malts, chocolate and coffee flavors. After the initial stout flavors, the bourbon and barrel gradually emerge. Oak and vanilla stand out, softening up the stout to a cocoa powder sweetness. A flourish of booziness peaks through near the end of each sip. The bourbon adds a bit of burn to each sip.

M: The mouthfeel doesn't skimp on either the stout or the barrel. The bourbon isn't as crisp as in some stouts but you can tell that it is there.

D: At nearly 10%, this is a sippin' stout. I've had both Batch 1 and 2 and I cast my vote for Batch 1.

Received as an ultra-generous gift from msubulldog25, who had an extra bottle thanks to tapoutjoe. It is about 20 degrees outside, so the bottle was extremely cold when it arrived at my doorstep. No need to wait, I cracked this one within the first 10 minutes of opening the package. What a great surprise to make my night memorable!

Pours pitch black with a very late cascading brown head that settles down to a thin collar and some bubbles. The smell is deeply roasted malts, marshmallows, oak, vanilla and toffee barrel notes, and some coffee beans. Very inviting, although the oak seems like it may potentially be harsh on the tongue. I guess we will see...

...and it turns out that a bit of the wood harshness does carry over, although it is luckily in a manageable amount. TONS of coffee bean bitterness breaks through, far more than I remember there being in the regular B.O.R.I.S. although I think the oak is magnifying it. Dark fruits lie in the background and must be hunted for. Marshmallows and earthy hops round out the flavor profile.

Mouthfeel is definitely this beers weak point. It is medium bodied, but I would expect a near 10% barrel aged imperial stout to have the full bodied, creamy palate that I desire. The carbonation levels are low and pretty much perfect which saves this score from being lower.

Drinkability is only slightly above average. The massive bitterness dominates the flavor profile so much that the complexities underneath never fully develop. Thus, it becomes frustrating after about 8 oz. because there is just so much potential that is not being met. Still, this is very tasty for what it is and a very fine brew. I am being extra critical since the base beer is such a good one, and in this case the barrel aging didn't improve it.

Nonetheless, I am so happy to finally get my hands on this beer. Thank you again Brian for the opportunity. I would recommend that others make the purchase, especially if you like your stouts coffee and hop dominated.

Bomber pours out black with about one finger of mocha colored foam. Some lacing is left behind while it dwindles down at moderate rates to a ring of fine bubbles. Scents of wine grapes, bourbon, oak, and tobacco fill my nose. Flavors of waxy and estery fruits are upfront along with a generous amount of wine grapes, toffee, and bourbon. The barrel aging has really ramped up the dark fruits in this brew to a shocking degree. The finish has tobacco, herbal notes, coconut, and a biscuit and cookie kick. I even get a little bit of pumpkin seed to it. Tasty stuff, though the barrel seems to have ramped up the fruity and herbal elements and hidden a lot of the earthy and roasty balance present in the original, leaving a winelike finish. Feels chewy, slick, and creamy. Recommended, but not quite as perfect as the original BORIS.

Big thanks to a very generous sproser for the bottles.

Pours death black with a tan head that retains for about a minute and then leaves ok lacing from there out.

Nose is alot of roasted malt, a wine-like character and some chocolate.

Taste follows with huge roasted malt, some chocolate and definite whiskey booze presence. The finish has that signature slick giant oatmeal flavor, and roasted malt lingers with whiskey on the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is super viscous, although still less than i expected, but pretty much where it should be in a beer like this. Madly slick on the finish, carbonation is medium where it should be.

Drinkability is ok, but this one is pretty heavy, and i can't see having more than one bomber alone.

Overall, a very pleasant, and well made barrel aged stout. I would like it to be a little bit more robust, but when you want that oatmeal action this one suffices for both that and that classic barrel aged awesomeness. A very nice beer. Overpriced like mad, but still quite good.

Aftr a hard pour, only a flash in the pan black foam lasts for about ten seconds. Pitch black, viscous liquid that leaves a light brown syrup on the inside of my glass. Chocolate, roasted oats, and creamy bourbon greet my nostrils. The taste is full of rich, roasted malts, molasses that sweetens the dark coffee and chocolate flavors. While the whiskey and wood adds depth and warmth. The palate is silky smooth and warm with just great balance and character. One primo nightcap, thats for sure.

Served from a 22oz bottle into my Brooklyn snifter (11/19/09) courtesy of Wespatrick (thanks man!) as a very generous extra at cellar temperature.

A: Pours a very thick motor oil black with a slight mocha colored head that fades to just a skin leaving a little bit of lace.

S: A complex and rich aroma of coffee, roasted malt, oatmeal, chocolate, vanilla, and fudge surrounded by a layer of bourbon.

T: Extremely complex taste including; chocolate, roasted malt, fudge, bourbon, oatmeal, vanilla, fresh roasted coffee, raisin, dry cocoa, and a touch of woody alcohol especially in the finish.

M: Wonderfully thick and syrupy with an approximately mild carbonation.

D: Very drinkable for such a rich and full-flavored beer, but the 9.4% abv. will catch up to you along with the heaviness of the flavors.

Overall this beer was such a welcomed surprise as an extra in an already superb trade with Wespatrick and it was indeed on my want list to boot. Truly an exceptional BA Imperial Stout with great aroma and flavor that is sure to impress fans of the style. Highly Recommended.

Appearance: Black with ruby highlights. I always think these oatmeal beers look oatmeal-y (I look for chunks every time), but I doubt they really do. Decent cappuccino head.

Smell: Big roast malt, caramelized/burnt sugar, cocoa, vanilla, fudge coffee.

Taste: Molasses, roast malt, chocolate, fudge, espresso, vanilla, coconut. Not nearly enough bourbon. A few plums and dark berries as well.

Mouthfeel: Heavy and thick.

Drinkability: Average for the style. I was not particularly impressed by this one.
