Just had the latest release of Barrel Aged BORIS Oatmeal Imperial Stout aged in whiskey barrels, from Hoppin Frog, and it was delicious, top notch. Might be the best Imperial Stout I've ever had. Akron seems to have a great brewery in Hoppin Frog. A friend mailed the beer to me.

(L) The color is dark brown almost black with a two inch thick light brown head

(A) The aroma is roasty malts, coffee, and bourbon.

(T) The taste is chocolate, coffee, oats, bourbon, sweetness, pine, all together in a really nice flavor.

(F) Velvety, creamy, thick, easy drinking, and barely a hint of the alcohol.

22oz bottle poured into a globe.

A: Pitch black. One finger brown head retains well. Spotty lacing.

S: Brownie batter and fudge sauce. Good amount of roast. Whiffs of mocha. Some earthy and piney hops. Chewy caramel, whiskey, and wood.

T: Good and roasty up front. A bit ashy even. Fudge sauce and brownie batter. Mocha. French roast. Big spike of hop bitterness and a lot of earth and pine hop flavor. Hints of vague dark fruit. Bite of whiskey is quite potent. Woody barrel. Bitter finish.

M: Huge, thick body. Weighty, chewy, viscous, and slick. Fine carbonation has some bite.

O: I'm a big whiskey drinker too, but the bite of the whiskey in this one did become a bit distracting. It's kinda hot. It isn't enough to derail the experience by any means, but I suppose I do prefer the base BORIS. Perhaps the batch I got just ended up hotter than usual.

Most over priced beer ever. It's not a bad beer but $15-$18 for a so-so 9.4% bb stout? Lol.

Black in the middle, brown to the edge. Small 1/5" brown head. Aroma was a delicate touch of bourbon, not too small, just, small, with a little bit of chocolate.

Taste was an appreciable beer that wasn't the biggest at anything it did, the base was veritable and sturdy, but wasn't the sludgiest of imperial stouts, allowed for the minor bourbon touch to sit confidently. Warming, smooth stout, would bang again, good price, good availability. Have had batches 5 & 6.

A beautiful thick dark pour with a nice inch light brown head. A light sweet smell and a great mouth feel. It goes down VERY smooth. It has a full bodied sweet taste traditional of oatmeal stout. It's such a smooth drinker it really packs a punch at 9.3% abv. It has a nice added flavor with the barrel aging. This is an amazing beer. I paid $18.00 for the 1 pint 6oz bottle and i'd buy it again. I am very impressed.

Pours dark black with a one finger mocha head. The aroma has chocolate, dark roasted malt, molasses, whiskey, oak, vanilla, and dark fruit.

Tastes just like it smells. Sweet, without being overly sweet. There is no alcohol taste, which is great for a 9.4 % abv beer. Gets sweeter as it warms up.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Has a chocolate and molasses aftertaste. An enjoyable beer, which i will gladly buy again.

On tap at the Lark in E. Northport, pours pitch black color with a small beige head that faded quickly and left decent spotty lacing. I suspect it was the bartenders pour that produced such a little head.

Smells of smoked malts, coffee grinds, piney hops, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, oats and some earthy notes. Pretty basic with not as much barrel influence at first, coming out later as it warmed up with minor oaky and vanilla notes.

Tastes much better than it smells with a nice roasty malt foundation that then turns to cocoa powder, dark chocolate, oats, vanilla bean, toffee, brown sugar, molasses and what seems like espresso. The next wave of flavors tie it all together with piney hops, earthy notes, oaky barrel notes and a little sweet booze. Minor oat presence for an oatmeal stout, but the char, barrel and chocolate accents more than make up for it and mask the ABV well.

Mouthfeel is thin and slick, sliding down easy with almost no carbonation, a medium feel that has a little texture but is generally thin and not boozy like I expected from a barrel aged stout. Complex, smooth and tasty, overall this was quite enjoyable and much easier to drink than a 9.4% ABV beer should be. No clue what year this stout is but I bet it's better aged longer.

22 oz bottle

A- Pitch black with a thin tan head. Slight sticky lacing on glass.

S- Dark chocolate, bourbon, coffee, vanilla beans. Smells very sweet like molasses.

T- Heavy bourbon flavor throughout. Also coffee, chocolate, oak, vanilla. Very sweet. Boozy as expected with a BA stout.

M- Medium/full with lower/average carbonation. The oatmeal makes for a smooth finish.

O- A very good barrel aged stout. Pricey, but glad I tried it. Well done.

This had everything that I was looking for in a barrel aged oatmeal stout. It was smooth and creamy. Not too boozy or too hot. The barrel complemented the oatmeal stout instead of overpowering it. Wish I had another!

75cl bottle. Very dark brown pour with a tall and lively espresso-coloured head, as well as visible carbonation. Smells of dark cherries, green hops, cocoa, coffee, bourbon and oak. Smooth mouthfeel, made slightly rough by the carbonation. Notes of bourbon up front, followed by dark cherries, roasted malts, milk chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Warm and bitter-sweet aftertaste. Very well balanced BA beer, with the base beer notes in balance with the barrel notes. A solid RIS, definitely one I will try again.

Pours black with a khaki head.
The aroma is very bourbon forward followed by bittersweet chocolate and roast.
The flavor is very strong bourbon with a big malty body. It's sweet chocolate, roast and bourbon. The oatmeal adds a nice thick creamy mouthfeel. Fantastic stuff.
