1 PINT 6 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a snifter
2013

This beer pours black and is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves no lacing.

I smell bourbon right away. I get caramel and vanilla notes along with roasted malt and light anise.

Full, chewy mouthfeel

This is a solid BA stout. It may have lost something in four years. There are certainly better beers. I wonder what Fred is charging for this vintage at the taproom. I saw some ridiculous pricing of vintage beer when I was there in July.

Pours motor-oil black with a very dark brown small head. head dissipates quickly, leaving a very small ring around the glass. Beautiful head color.
Smell is a surprising amount of whiskey for the abv. Also chocolate, dark roasted malts, a bit of dark fruit.
Tastes like a well-rounded BA stout. Similar to the nose, but more whiskey and a bit of coffee and vanilla. Finishes a bit bitter.
Feel is semi-viscous, pretty thick for the abv. Nice and thick, minimal alcohol heat.

Very good BA stout here, I've passed on these seeing them on the shelves in Wis. before, will have to pick up some other variants next time.

Poured into a snifter.

Appearance is pitch black with a finger of dark brown head that dissipated quickly. Left copious alcohol legs on the glass.

The aroma is big chocolate, intense roasted malts, bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits and some earthy hop notes.

The taste is coffee like roast malts, chocolate, vanilla sweetness, bourbon, oak, dark fruit and earthy hop bitterness.

The palate is full and creamy with a big lingering bitter roast that mingles well with the hops to help balance it out. It is relatively drinkable for the abv.

Overall this is an excellent rendition of a barrel aged imperial stout from a brewery that seems kind of under the radar. I really like that the notes from the barrel don't overpower the base beer but instead accentuate it.

Pours black with very little head.
Smells sweet and roasty - not super complex, but very nice.
Taste is pretty good, but the bourbon doesn't really come through much other than putting a little bit of burn on it. A little sweet, a little chocolate and vanilla.
Feel is moderately heavy/thick with a little bit of a burn, but surprisingly drinkable for a BBA stout.
Overall - I'd buy it again. Maybe not the best BBA stout out there, but it's a good BBA stout that only cost me $15 for a bomber (much less than some stouts that aren't any better).

L- Pours a thick black, with a thin, creamy brown head.
S- Lots of sweet malt smell. Chocolate and black licorice. Oaky smell.
T- Very sweet right off the bat. Nice hop and spice that transitions into the chocolate and oat. Bitterness balances te begining sweetness. Bitterness resinates for a long time along with the chocolate. Whiskey botes slides im after initial sweetness and does not overpower. Wonderfully complex.
M- Wonderfully smooth symphony of tastes. Warming.
O- Complexitu makes this a wonderful offering

B.O.R.I.S. has a lot of variants -- this is the 2nd I've had. Pours dark and rather thick. Head is brown and inconsequential.

Smell is tobacco, coffee, some roasted bread. Taste is burnt toast, anise (black licorice), caramel, the wood of a charred barrel, chocolate-covered cherries that have been left on the frying pan too long, and cheap bourbon. Hoppy; and much more bitter and harsh than the Crusher/Oatmeal Reserve variant. This one, also at 9.4%, has a cloying alcohol aftertaste that gets worse the more it warms. Gets a little sickly and slick. Boozy can be done well. Here, I feel a headache coming on.

Any benefit of the barrel aging seems to have been missed, too much bourbon in the wood and burnt malt way too forward rather than mellowing, a silky vanilla undercurrent only barely there. You know how your wife says stouts are "nasty"? This.

I got a Hopping Frog logo cap, not sure how old this was as there is no date, and I did cellar it for 4 months. Longer might have mellowed the tastes? Careful with your BORIS.

No bottle date, so I'm unsure how long this sat

Look: Barrel aged BORIS pours a viscous black, with a minimal khaki head appearing up top. The head dissipated quite quickly.

Smell: Judging from the nose, this has aged for a bit. I get whiskey notes, a hint of cherry, which seems to be something I get with aged BA beers, tootsie roll, and some chocolate

Taste: Whiskey, cherry, tootsie roll, and pretty much everything I get in the nose. I am not big on beers that have been cellared, so I'm sure I'd enjoy a fresh batch much more.

Feel: The mouthfeel is pretty nice and full on this, with some creamy aspects. There is a little burn on the finish, showcasing the whiskey notes

Overall: My main issue was that this wasn't a fresh representation, but that said I enjoyed the beer. The flavors and aromas seem a little subdued, but this could be due to age.

Pours black with a thin tan head that fades fairly quickly. Aroma is of dark fruit and whiskey. Whiskey flavors start out strong but mellow after a few sips. Roasted flavor and molasses are present. Feel is very smooth for an oatmeal stout. Overall, a very nice stout that is high on my list.
