22oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Average orange with a thin head that immediately disappeared to nothing
S: Graham cracker, baking spice, vanilla and finally pumpkin towards the end. Smells a bit sweet, not much bourbon other than the vanilla
T: Matches the nose. Sweet, vanilla, baking spice, graham cracker, pumpkin
M :Sweet, medium-bodied
O: Too sweet, not enough bourbon given the name. Granted it's been four years since I reviewed the non-barrel aged version but I liked that much better & don't recall this much sweetness

Sparkling but lightly, this appears chill hazed light amber with a thick off-white collar that clings in peaks and settles to a thin film.

The whiskey sharpens the spices to smell like cinnamon candy, and the pumpkin gives a moist pumpkin roll element.

Taste is really potent of lower shelf whiskey with red licorice, cinnamon, bread pudding, vanilla, and a pumpkin mash swallow.

Crisp with a medium body, light carbonation and that sting of heat.

Hazy orange color with beige head that goes away quickly. Aroma has nice pumpkin with spices but no evident barrel character. But you can get it on the taste along with spices. Quite bitter overall, doesn't go that well with the spices. Not bad but a bit unbalanced.

On tap at the Hoppin' Frog Tasting Room in Akron, OH.

This one pours a bright pumpkiny orange, with a very small head, and no lacing.

Smells like vanilla, cinnamon, caramel, graham cracker, spiced pumpkin pie, and some slight bourbon.

The bourbon is more noticeable on the nose, for sure. The bourbon melds in with the meaty pumpkin and on-point spicing here. The spicing is noticeable but not overdone, like many pumpkin ales, and you can actually taste the pumpkin. This has a very strong malt backbone too, showing that it's actually a beer, toasty and caramelly, with some honey and molasses. It does give off the impression of pumpkin pie, with the graham cracker and vanilla from the barrel- which reminds me of whipped cream. There's a little bit of oak too.

This is medium bodied, with a sweet and bready mouthfeel, and a lower level of carbonation.

One of the better pumpkin ales that I've had. Really nice work from Hoppin' Frog.

A very good pumpkin ale in my opinion. Pumpkin pie flavors (nutmeg, pumpkin, whipped cream) dominate the flavor profile of this beer. I don't notice any bourbon taste from the barrel aging, but it did seem slightly smoother or silkier than the non bba version.

I left this bottle of Barrel Aged Frog's Hollow to age a little longer yet. Opening it in the spring hasn't affected its distinctively fall-time orange tone but it may have soiled the complexion a little; floating bits of sediment make the second pour look thick as actual pie filling.

The beer certainly isn't shy about the fact it's aged in whiskey barrels; banana esters, burnt sugar, and butterscotch are apparent from the first sniff. There's a lot going on here. Still, it doesn't smell nearly as intimidating or intoxicating as other barrel-aged offerings.

Alcohol isn't a huge factor on the palate either; this tastes about its strength, which, at 8.4%, is incredibly reasonable for something that spent time in a whiskey barrel. In fact, I'm a little surprised the pie spices are able to stand up so well to the wood spices. Likewise the malts which offer as much toffee, biscuit, and graham cracker as ever.

Complimenting - rather than competing - with these pumpkin pie elements are the vanilla and honeyed influences of the whiskey barrels. That extra little bit of spice also props up existing cinnamon, nutmeg and clove notes and combines with the malt to make incredible, overarching candy apple and caramelized banana flavours.

It's official: dessert has been decided for every Thanksgiving from now until eternity. Blending the sweet and spicy of pumpkin ales with the ultra-sweet and ultra-spicy qualities of whiskey makes an ultimate after dinner autumn treat. Barrel Aged Frog's Hollow is a beer of outstanding depth. I've already carved out a space in the cellar for next year's batch.

Hazy dark orange with a really small white head, quick to a poor lingering string of foam.
A really rich baked pumpkin smell, really pulpy, with the expected pie spices (nutmeg, faint cinnamon, vanilla powder, faint ginger), with caster sugar on top. A really nice dry alcoholic whisky scent creeping up the nostrils too.
The same whisky note greets in the taste, with caramel and booze right from the get-go, pretty strong. Not a lot of sweetness, a nice natural pumpkin feel with a moderate amount of spices (not as spiced as other pumpkin ales), with some clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, faint black pepper and a nice vanilla note that's also partly induced by the whiskey. Finishes with some light woody notes and an unwanted earthiness, hinting at dry tobacco and walnut, splashed in a generous amount of warm whisky (initially). Lightly bitter.
Medium body, medium prickly carbonation. Aftertaste of caramel and pumpkin, clove, light nutmeg, mouth-numbing whisky. Booze piles up as you drink this bomber, so sipping it helps, even it it doesn't justify its abv.
Still, a manageable big beer, tasty, fragrant, a bit inelegant and rugged and heart-warming.
