The first thing I noticed was that there was no smoke when I popped the cap off. It poured a dark amber/brown with a one finger head which left shortly but a ring stayed around. There was a dark fruit malty aroma which emitted from the brew. The taste was a mix of malts, hops with a slight bitter finish. Thought the mouthfeel was a bit watery but seemed to get better as I sipped it. Would drink this again. Not one that I would choose first but because of it's very low 3.8 ABV, this could easily be a session beer from time to time.

500ml bottle into glass pint.
40°F

$3.99 / ea.

A: Bright deep brown body topped with better than two fingers of loose tan head that gradually give way to moderate foamy lace and a thick creamy cover.

S: Slightly sweet deep roasted malt carries the day with a strong nutty profile and coffee notes. Really pleasant.

T: Extremely delicate flavor that is malt driven. Slightly tart and coupled with a coffee bitterness and doses of roasted nuts. No hop flavors, but the flavor remains balanced. Very little aftertaste.

M: Light body with moderate carbonation. Crisp and clean.

D: Definitely a session beer. At 3.8 abv you could drink this one all day and not feel a thing. The flavor profile is very light, and inoffensive, and the mouth and aroma are satisfactory. Excellent choice for a long day (or night) of drinking.

O: Respectable showing, but nothing special. I would have no problems having this one again some time.

Schwartzbier having a "born" date of March 8, 2009. Perhaps I tried this WAY too late. I don't think that this beer is meant to be tried a year later, at all. I will try again when I see it fresher. However, for a year old, it pours black with a thick tan head that is nice looking but quickly fades. There is no nose but for a very small hint of pumpernickel; very faint. Wow. No body; no character; no flavor except a hint of yeast and hops....a small hint. Not to try a bottle of this a year old again. Will re-visit this review if and when I try a fresh one.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a Pilsner glass. Bottle has a "born by date", whatever that means, of 4/15/2010.

Appearance: deep brown hue with a clear body and two thick fingers of pillowy tan head. Nice lace on the glass, too.

Smell: rich malt aroma with a hint of chocolatey toast and a touch of sour grain. Sweet, earthy hops are lightly evident as well. I rather like it.

Taste: sweet, light malt again with a hint of roastiness. Less sourness or graininess in the flavor than the aroma. Bitterness is balanced and noble in character, just like the aroma. This is quite a tasty brew indeed.

Mouthfeel: light-bodied with a fizzy carbonation. Not really creamy, but at least it is interesting.

Drinkability: quenching and tasty. I haven't had a ton of schwarzbiers, but I am finding this one rather nice.

Smooth and creamy. Nose too creamy with hints of coffee and caramel that escalate over time. Brownish color with hints of black foam of the same ilk. Bitterness, which becomes progressively stronger during the tasting, with traces of roasting, which are felt in the palace. The body is pretty safe, even acid, a bit like bad coffee ground.

Poured into a glass mug from an attractive large (17oz) import bottle. A dark blackish brown in color with a khaki colored head. Bready and roasted malt aroma. Flavor has the black malt up front, giving way to bitterness. Coffee and roasted flavors are there but very tame. Slight metallic twinge. Medium bodied lager. Drinks easy but there are better tasting examples to be found. At the price point its at, Krusovice is a decent low end schwarzbier option.

I picked this beer up at a local package store to give it a go. Not a bad beer, but nothing super special about it.

Appearance- Lovely dark red body with a very fluffy head. The head pours about 2-3 fingers and slowly tapers to about a quarter inch after four-five minutes.

Smell- Not too much of a smell to this beer. Has an airy, woody smell. Like you are in a humid redwood forest, is the best I can describe it. Pleasant, but not strong.

Taste- Very hoppy initial taste with a smooth, fresh finish. Does not have the coffee, nutty, or chocolate taste of other dark beers. The carbonation is quite high in this beer which gives a very airy after taste. Slight bite two seconds after the swallow, in a good way.

Mouthfeel- Slightly heavy initial, but dissipates into a dry feeling afterwards. Strange for a beer with such low alcohol content. The high carbonation is pleasant.

Drinkability- Feels heavy after a pint. Could probably drink 2-3 in a hour tops before feeling too full. However, it is very enjoyable and is not a quick drink kind of beer.

Overall, I enjoy the beer but its not one that I will exclusively go after or try to find. I would like to try it on tap.

look: 4 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance- Fluffy head that slowly dissolved into a thin lace. Very dark for a lager.

smell- smoky chocolate like aroma

taste- very soft going down. A slight linger on the tongue but nothing too overpowering. Kind of a metalic aftertaste. Not too many bubbles, but enough carbonation; medium bodied.

Mouthfeel- I am not a great judge of this category, but there was something about this beer.

Drinkability- pretty good. Not too heavy. A bit like a light porter, but much more drinkable. Maybe about 3-4 in a session.

Had on tap at Quarter Bar, Brooklyn.

Poured into a shaker pint, the beer has a nice stiff creamy looking head above a dark chocolate colored body with deep red highlights. Smells very malty with nice roasted and smoked aromas as well. There's an earthy bite to this beer, with bitterness and slight sour sensations all over with those same burnt and smoked flavors coming through in the taste as well. The body is pretty thick with lower carbonation. A nice beer for dark lovers looking for a session beer.

Poured with a fluffy, floamy, frothy, thick, light tan head that lasted a long time and some lace. Color is a clear dark cherry. Aroma is dark malt, toffee, dark pipe tobacco, a little fresh sawdust, fresh turned earth and in a word: nice. Flavor is similar but not quite so extravagent- dark malt, a bit roasty, not overly sweet, super easy drinking. Body is good, soft, but not overly so and well carbonated for what it is. Finish is like flavor, tapers slowly to mid length and prompts me to want a little cigar. I like this beer. Session.

Had this on tap at a pizza place in Prague. Serve in a tall pint, cool.

A-light mocha head and very dark walnut body.

S-roasted grain smell, chocolate, fresh air smell.

T-chocolate and toasted bread flavor.

M-smooth, slick and full.

D-very drinkable, not very much in the hops department, almost "stout-like".

Pours a clear, very dark brown with red throughout and slight light penetration. A nice fluffy head drops to a thick film.
Smell is malt, smoke, molasses and coffee. nicely balanced.
Taste is the same as the smell. Balance is as well.
Watery with a light-medium body. Light effervescence, fairly smooth. A good flavor but a weak body. Easy to drink several of these.

This beer has dark brown color with a creamy cap of foam which left significant lacing. The nose showcased chocolate and biscuit malt and a dash of earthy hops. Light and fluid on the palate. The dark malt reveals some chocolate as it dances toward bitterness in the finish. It leaves the palate a little dry.

This beer isn't bursting with flavor but it has nice balance and is drinkable.

Pours out dark brown with a nice tanned two finger head that fades pretty quickly, with medium carbonation and leaves little lacing. At first a caught a whiff of barnyard but it mellowed out to a coffee and chocolate smell. It had a light, watery mouth feel with a burnt coffee, chocolate taste and a hint of metallic. Overall, I probably wouldn't buy again.

Had this one on my trip to Slovaki and reviewing from notes. Poured from the 500mL bottle into a pilsner style glass. The beer looks great, and tastes OK. Light with touches of roasted, on the borderline of being burnt. Some bitterness. Highly sessionable at 3.8%.

Ruddy brown with eggplant highlights and a foamy firm cap of finely bubbled light brown foam that slowly recedes.

Sweetish malty aroma of cocoa and raisins, a dash of fig and clove.

Lightly roasted malty goodness upfront, not bitter, tending slightly toward sweet. Mild cocoa flavors, hints of coffee, plum and fig. Flavors are all understated, no one flavor dominates, pretty balanced.

Creamy and full, but slightly slick, finishes a bit chalky. Tasty and pretty drinkable.

Pours black with a foamy tan head. Head falls fairly slow. Decent lace.

Tinny, sweet malt aroma. Quite metallic.

Rather sweet malt taste. Slightly metallic and a bit roasted. Ends sweet.

Thin to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Decent enough, easy drinking beer. Would drink again.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a medium brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is toffee, honey and caramel. The flavor is light toffee and caramel malts with some yeast. Thin, watery mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I bought myself a 50 cl black can. There's a picture of the Bohemian castle in gold along with an emperor crown and some gold medals. Looks really nice.

A: The color is very dark, almost black with hints of red. The head is massive, creamy and light brown. The lacings left after the slow dissipation is quite impressive.

S: Light roasted malt, with a hint of smoke. Floral hops and dark dried fruits. An obvious flowery smell. Chocolate.

T: Roasted malt, but a bit thin in taste. Dark dried fruits along with coffee and bitter chocolate. There's very little hops in this one.

M: A bit thinner than I expected, still medium but a bit thinner than I want a Schwarzbier to be. The carbonation is moderate. Aftertaste is a bit short, and holds some sweetness and some dry bitterness.

D: A Schwarzbier is always a Schwarzbier. This is of course a nice beer, but not the best Schwarzbier I've had.

A- This beer has a jet brown body with a garnet glow with a thick tan head that last for a good bit. The body is a bit too dense to see much carbonation except for a few bubbles at the base of the glass.
S- This beer has a clean aroma with a flinty note and a faint black malt that has a bit of dish soap quality to it.
T- The nice smooth light flavor of black malt that is not astringent or bitter with a graham note. There is a hint of licorice that comes through as the beer warms a bit. There is a light dark nougat note with a very light hop tang in the finish. The black malt flavor lingers for just a moment after each sip.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a slight slippery texture and no alcohol heat.
D- This beer is very smooth nice dark black malt flavor but it is a bit soft.

M - Medium bodied. Smooth and syrupy.

D - Could drink this all night. Satisfying and very relaxing to drink.

Never even heard of this beer until my wife brought it home.

Pilsner glass pour with a cola brown color and a small off-white head. Roasted malts, light pear and a slight coffee aroma. Dark malty taste with some campfire smoke in there as well and some light bitterness in the aftertaste. Watery, thin mouthfeel. Drinkability is somewhat higher though the taste, for me, would get tiresome quickly.

Overall it was nice to try this gold medal Prague beer though I am sure this brew is much better directly at the source.

A darkbrown beer with la small beige head.

A faint smell of roasted coffee, sweet dried fruits and burnt bread.

The sweet tones are dominating, dried plums and dates, some roasted notes, very short bitterness.

Rather creamy mouthfeell.

In all a bit bland, no specific highlights.

Appearance is a dark brown with red hue having a nice pillowy head with light lace. Smell having a malty earthiness to it. Taste has just a touch of roasted malt flavor with a note of chocolate with a nice hop balance. Mouthfeel is medium with good body and carbonation. A bit more mellow than most schwarzbiers I've tried making a nice drinker for me.

S- dark roasted and bread-like malts. a faint hint of coffee.

T- dark roasted malts. somewhat sweet as well. a bitter coffee finish.

M- medium to full bodied with a low level of carbonation. very smooth.

D- easy to finish. very sessionable and 3.8% ABV with a better than expected amount of flavor. check this one out if youre a fan of the style.
