Presentation: A rather eye catching yellow, black and red label attracts me to a very standard looking 12 ounce brown glass bottle. Sealed with a yellow crown cap which simply has the word ‘Imperial” below a black silhouette of a spread eagle. The neck label sports a similar presence. The main label enlarges all the designs previously described, and adds some red to the black & yellow colors….Hmmm….in fact I have to say that my initial thoughts were that this was German. But it’s Costa Rican!? OK. Even so, the main label has incredibly strong Teutonic parallels, sort of a mix between the German Eagle Cross WWI Black & White Flag Banner of the Kaiser Army & Navy and also that of the current German Military. It’s an eerie looking Eagle I have to say, are there many ex-Nazis in Costa Rica I wonder!??! Listed at 4.6% Alc./Vol., the neck has an inkjet printed date of ‘30JUN06-09 FRDM 14F’….guess its fresh then!!? LOL. Imported by the Fourth Reich.

Appearance: Hmmmm……..which of the generic descriptions should I use for this Review….pale yellow, sun faded straw, diluted gold…..pale stale piss……yeah I’ll go with the latter. Nice bleached white head rises from the body on the pour. Fizzle stick head, springs big, but pops small, and sinks faster than a Californian Surfer with both his legs munched off by a Great White….come on I’m trying to describe things in a new light, its hard after a 1000 or so reviews.

Nose: Nothing to smell here, move along….or you’ll be shot.

Taste: I think if I dig a tunnel North I could escape the sour faded hops, the feint sweet malts and lingering sweet corn. Stinky lingering sweaty Fish n’ Chips done Greek style in clean vegetable oil, Bloody Hell….the fucking worst way, do ‘em in Lard or fuck off home Zorba….geez this one is not good…..

Mouthfeel: Fizzy UK brewed pseudo-lager…..Carling Black Label, Fosters, XXXX, dare I go on….Holsten…..follow the bear…..not.

Drinkability: Crisp, clean, unfettered and a quarter-decent enough offering but ultimately watery-yawny-borey. If I ever go to visit Costa Rica, surely by accident, but hey just in case I do, then I guess I will enjoy a few of these, most probably because I have no other choice.

Overall: Imperial!!?! Black, Yellow and Red colored label. A Spread Eagle main design that would do the Kaiser proud. I’m trying not to think of World domination here, really I am….but I keep looking at the bottle….I cannot help but think that is a rather nasty-Nazi Costa-Rican Bud, oh I’m sorry I mean it’s rather generic and mass processed….for Costa Rica that is…..hey, Anheuser Busch….well the name does have a Germanic ring to it though…..the red, yellow & black label….the Teutonic Eagle……it’s all too much……it must be the rerun of the Odessa File Movie this afternoon; Nicht Gut…oh I mean, erm not bad….but not good either…did all the Germans go to Milwaukee I wonder!??! Scary….

Probably OK for those Ex-SS members avoiding Simon Wiesenthal but not recommended for the rest of us. Says “La Cerveza Pura Vida” on the neck label…..oh yeah; Vhell veee haz Vayyz uv mayhking u dtrinken……but not this crap I hope……

Review: Bottle of Imperial Pale Lager, 4.60%ABV An interesting lager from Costa Rica, Imperial, a very pleasant refreshing light lager. Appearance was a crystal clear, pale golden straw colour, what a normal looking lager should look like. When pouring a small frothy white appeared that dissipated relatively fast with some lacing remaining. Sweet aroma of lightly toasted malt with corn. Smell was great, very enticing. Similar to the smell, there is a slightly bitter grassy flavour of a creamy aftertaste of dry corn sweetness, that leaves a dry feeling in the mouth Overall, Imperial Beer is a standard, good lager.

Bottle into Pilsner glass

A -Pours a clear golden straw color that has a frothy head. Head is slightly creamier than most light lagers that I have seen. Head dissipates somewhat slowly at first but picks up the pace as time goes on. Seems to be somewhat lightly carbonated. 3.5/5

S - Mostly a base malt aroma with a hint of hops at the end. Corn. There is an undertone of rice. Very little hop aroma. There is something else to the aroma that I can't quite place… Possibly somewhat skunked… Hint of yeast. 2.5/5

T - Malt and grain centered, but very lightly flavored. Light bitterness from the hops on the back end. Hops are somewhat floral. Hint of corn. Maybe a bit of white bread. Not a whole lot going on here. 2.5/5

M - Very light and dry. Hard to tell that there was anything in my mouth once it's been swallowed. Some carbonation but not a lot. 3/5

O - Very light tasting, light feeling beer. Can't say that I will ever buy this again in the US considering all of the other, cheaper light beers available. Hard to pay $10 for 6 when it's comparable in enjoyment to Miller Lite, etc. Happy to have had the chance to try it though. 2.75/5

A: Pours a pale/golden yellow. Vigorous carbonation. Head vanishes almost instantly. Thin cap of white foam.

S: Metallic, grainy. Mild neutered hop aroma.

T: Metallica up front. Some grainy notes. Adjunct like without the flagrant corn flakes. Aftertaste just drops off. Very clean. Crisp. Dry. No lingering flavor except for a slight metallic hint.

M: Bright, carbonated, light.

O: Pretty much what you would expect. Goes down easily enough. Doesn't absolutely smack of corn, so it has that going for it. Still, subpar at best.

Yellow fizzy beer. Of course, if you're in Costa Rica and it's 90 degrees in the shade, ANYTHING below room temperature tastes pretty good.

Not any worse - or better - than other tropical beers. Cool logo, though.

Single, twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine and More in West Orange...
Pours a clear, clean, lucid, bright, golden-colored hue with a minimal head that left very minor lacing...
Corny, grainy, non-descript, faint aroma...
Taste was surprisingly good for a light lager... flavorful, crisp, and refreshing with slight yeast and corn essences, lemons, and lime in the mix...
Decent mouthfeel for the style along with a very good level of drinkability considering the modest ABV and lack of cloying flavors...
Not bad...

Better than an American macro, I'll say that. Clear golden yellow body with fizzy two finger head that gives off a grainy, dry aroma. Light bodied, crisp, bland but not gross and even has a touch of pils malt like sweetness; beer also avoids being too thin and watery.

i knocked a few of these back as soon as i arrived in costa rica
last week - imperial is to cr what budweiser is to the usa - you see locals and tourists alike sitting around with quart bottles in certain locales - ok to quench a thirst after a long drive, hike or flight - served it's purpose at the time, but i preferred the other popular cr option, pilsen, and then bavaria dark to this most popular national brand. - btw, the canned version tasted very metallic when compared to the bottle

Poured a yellow golden color with a nice carbonation and a fluffy white head. Nose is grainy, lightly hopped and some malts. Taste is sweet, malty, light hops and grain. Pretty fizzy beer and has some good mouthfeel for the style. Not my favorite style, won't drink again but not half bad.

Best by date of 29 Oct., 2015.

The beer pours into a Duvel glass a clear light golden yellow with a 3/4" head that recedes fairly soon to a ring around the glass and an thin covering of foam. Sipping leaves a larger ring on one side of the glass with the other having lots of small speckles and legs of lacing some of which slide back to the liquid.

The aroma is light, faintly sweet and showing no hops (no surprise that in an adjunct lager :-).

The flavors are lightly sweet without a touch of bitterness showing (although occasionally I think I detect a touch of earthiness, but its hard to be sure).

The mouth feel is on the light side but slighly crisp with a light amount of carbonation. As expected from the style of beer the finish is medium length and just has the sweetness fade away but without any real dryness at the end, just no sweetness.

Overall this is a drinkable beer with no unpleasant feature, but nothing particularly notable either. For me, its not something I'll be seeking out in the future but I can understand how those who don't care for stronger flavors would enjoy this beer and want another.

A: Pours a crystal clear yellow in color with some light visible carbonation. The beer has a 3/4 finger white foamy head that reduces to a thin layer over the entire surface of the beer with thicker patches and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate lacing is observed.

S: Strong aromas of grainy malts with very little sweetness and a hint of apple as the beer warms up.

T: This beer has some more hops than I was expecting and not as sweet as many others in the style. There is a good amount of grainy malts but not a ton of sweetness from them. The hops balances out the flavor.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin.

O: Probably one of the beers I was surprised by the balance of flavor since that is not common in the style. Definitely easy to drink and sessionable.

From what I remember this was suprisingly a decent beer out of the bottle.

Deep yellow colour with lots of bubbles and nice head that dissipates quickly.

Nice grassy smell, floral hops, citrusy. Taste was around the same, bland aftertaste, not much to it. Very drinkable and would try this again if I were ever in Costa Rica.

Ap: Hazy, golden yellow color with apparent carbonation throughout. 1 inch head that quickly fades away. A tiny bit of lacing is present. Looks like cider.

Ar: Skunky corn adjunct odor. Meh. Worst part of the beer. But it is misleading.

Ta: Wait is this cider? This sure tastes like it. This has a very pleasant sweet flavor. Apple flavors are present but the skunk and metallic aftertaste is not. Very impressive for an adjunct. It is very tasty.

Mf: mild carbonation. Semi-watery texture. Still very refreshing however.

Ov: This may just become my go-to adjunct cheap fix. It has a much better flavor than Bud, smoother texture than Busch and PBR while still refreshing like a Miller High Life without the heavy carbonation. This beer is a winner. And it's cheap. I still have 5 more to go. Cheers!
