A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer topped by a small but dense eighth of light tan head which fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of intense wood, light spice, chocolate, and espresso. Nice rum barrel notes as well.
T: Taste is smooth chocolate and some espresso followed by some nice wood and some rum flavors. Hint of vanilla and dark sugars along with some slight wet cardboard but it works. Not a very funky rum barrel but that's okay. On the swallow this one is more wood, coffee, and dark chocolate with some lingering rum barrel and oak.
M: This beer is fairly thick on the palate but not overly so while the feel is a little silky. Carbonation is slightly effervescent but not over the top while the beer has a drying finish.
O: Overall this is a really nice beer with some great flavors and a nice amount of complexity. The rum barrels are a nice change of pace from the standard bourbon barrel offering. It does taste a little bit off of where it likely peaked but it's still quite good.

2014 batch

22 oz bomber into a snifter

As I've been doing with this series since the start, I"m going to refer to my first review (Evan Williams and note the difference, rather than staring each from scratch.

Nose is more licorice-y and dry, none of the vanilla and caramel nuances from bourbon aging. Flavors are more sugary sweet as well, not as layered as some of the other varieties. There's also a banana/bubble gum thing going on I hadn't notice before. As always, delicious.

22oz bottle into 25oz snifter. 2014 release.

A: Pours near-black with a finger of dense and heavy light brown head that took its time to slowly fade into a greasy film. Sheets of sticky lace were left down the glass.
S: Chocolate syrupy dominates the nose along with hints of vanilla, rum, wood, and roast.
T: Rich and potent flavors of roast, chocolate fudge, bitter dark chocolate, black coffee, and caramel mix with barrel flavors of sweet and slightly spicy rum. I get a hint of vanilla as well. Very roasted and surprisingly bitter overall. The rum is smooth with no trace of booze or alcohol warmth. Finish is bitter, roasty, and lingering.
M: Fully body, thick and bitter mouthfeel, low carbonation. Mouthfeel is slightly sharp at times. Potent and rich flavors. Definitely a sipper.
O: A very integrated barrel flavor that doesn’t dominate the base beer. More bitter than I remember the others being, and a bit rough on the palate at times. Alcohol is hidden masterfully well. Good rum flavor, but far from my favorite variants.

A - Pours pitch black with a very thin lacing that's toffee colored.

S - Chocolate, light char, and rum. Nose is quite weak.

T - Chocolate, oak, rum, and some dark chocolate bitterness on the back end that lingers with a little bit of vanilla and rum without the alcohol heat.

M - Heavy medium body, velvety smooth and no carbonation, lip smacking sticky.

O - This beer is better than it's rating.

Got this one from ScottO a while back. Cheers dude!

From a bomber into a snifter
BR 1
Vintage: 2014

APPEARANCE: Pours a clear dark brown and yields a three finger, medium looking, creamy tan head with very good retention. Clear black body with lower levels of carbonation. Head slowly fades to a good full cap and leaves lots of good lacing down the glass. A ring and slight wisp remain until the end leaving lots of nice lacing as the glass empties. Good looking though slightly lighter for the style.

SMELL: Lots of oak, vanilla, some sweet cream, sugary rum, marshmallow and milk chocolate on the nose. Medium strength.

TASTE: Really, really tasty. More so than expected from the nose. Oak, sweet sugary rum and vanilla up front. Flavorful right off the bat. Caramel and toffee sweetness with rum and booze at the swallow. A big and lingering aftertaste of sweet rum, wood, milk chocolate, toffee and some decent chocolate bitterness. Lots of rum barrel and sweet flavors here. Really good.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a burn and finishes a bit mouth-coating. Some decent heat lingers.

OVERALL: Here's another example of how much better the Eclipse series has become over the last couple years. This one was great. The flavors were wonderful and although the rest of the show couldn't really keep up, the decadence of the stout and the barrel made this very enjoyable to drink. Give this one a shot if you can find it still. Thanks again for the box ScottO!

Thanks to Retsinis for sharing this one at his tasting.

2014 vintage.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, dark fruit, rum, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with char, cocoa powder, dark fruit, rum, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with rum barrel aged characteristics that are earthy and old.

Serving type: bottle.

2014 Vintage
11.9% ABV

Appearance: Very dark brown bordering on black with a moderate dark beige head that gradually faded. Good looking IS.

Smell: Brown sugar, mild Rum, and mild coffee/roasted malt aromas. Not a bad nose but the rum barrel aromas are fairly modest.

Taste: The Rum bal-aging is not overt but nicely integrated in the taste profile. it has some sweetness but it is surprisingly less sweet than some of the other versions. The profile also features brown sugar, roast malts, faint vanilla, and moderate tannic oak notes. The finish is fairly dry ending with some Rum and tannic oak notes. Fairy restrained alcohol presence.

Mouth-feel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. for some reason I feel this has more body than some of the other variants.

Overall: Good Eclipse variant. not vastly different from the other variants as the Rum is fairly mild but as with all the variants, I can pick up the impact of the barrel used.

Bomber poured into a marching eclipse snifter. The brew appears dark brown in color with a brown head that displays solid retention. As the cap fades it leaves pathcy webs of lacing effect.

The smell is woody with some citrus and roasty grain and earthiness. A slight vanilla and caramel accent. Some carbonics are present blending with chocolate when warm.

A citrus hops bitterness is upfront blending to roasted grain bitterness, fruity alcohol and neutral oakiness with slight raisony alcohol appeal. Some mineral and carbonic character into the finish with a dry tannin touch.

This is medium bodied and modestly carbonated. An interesting offering but the barrel really doesnt stand out as some other version of eclipse, in its place is just fresh totality with some neutral woody character.

From 12/29/14 notes. Sid eby side with the Java-Vanilla. 2014 vintage, 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

Pours a dark brown, almost black color, with one inch of dark brown head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks just like the others. Smells like cay, has some rum to it, roasted malts, choclate, chalk, earthy notes. Tastes same as the nose but with more alcohol to it. Medium body and moderate carbonation; it is a little hot.

Overall a good beer like the Java-Vanilla but again, not as good as previous years' bourbon versions. Wouldn't seek this one out again.

Pours a black ale with a big fluffy beige head. Good lacing.

Nice rum aroma in the nose as well as caramel, apple, pear, chocolate and molasses.

The taste is like a blended fudge brownie. Good chocolate tastes with an underlining of the rum. Not harsh in any way. Swish it in your gums and you'll be awakened by the booze, letting you know it's there. A touch of sweetness on the swallow followed by a chocolate/coffee bean aftertaste.

Overall I was impressed with this. I've only had a few rum barreled beers and this was definitely a treat. Blended well right now! No need to cellar this baby. Nicely done.
