A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer which is topped by a finger of dense and rocky light tan head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing.
S: Smells of a ton of rich chocolate with a touch of espresso. Nice oak, caramel, and vanilla in the background
T: Taste is dark chocolate up front with some nice coffee notes. Touch of charred wood and burnt sugar with some oak, caramel and vanilla. On the swallow there's more chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, oak, vanilla, and caramel with some lingering roasted malts toward the back with a hint of honey sweetness.
M: This beer has a pretty full and silky body but it isn't obscenely heavy. Carbonation is adequate for the style while the ABV helps to give this one a drying finish on the back end.
O: Overall, this is a very good iteration of Eclipse. They all tend to taste a little different thanks to the barrel and this one is no different. Really nice complexity and flavors with just enough influence before things got to be too oaky.

2018 vintage. 22 oz. bottle poured into a teku glass.

Near black with a thick one inch tan head. Good head retention for the abv.

Nose: Strong roast/dark chocolate presence along with a health dose of bourbon.

Taste: Bourbon-forward up front but with no alcohol heat. Roasted malt and dark fruit on the finish. Semisweet finish.

Feel: Full-bodied, medium carbonation.

One of the sweeter stouts I've had in some time. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but after a few sips enough subtleties emerged to keep me interested.

Lots of raw, featureless alcohol in the aroma, much more well masked on the tongue thankfully. Plenty of brown sugar, vanilla, fudge and caramel contribute to the sticky sweetness. There is a hint of roast and woody char help cut the sweet to a small degree.

Good, but no where near worth the price tag. And for all that money, they could label the various versions instead of making the consumer research at the point of sale what they are buying.

2018 Vintage

Appearance: Very dark brown bordering on black with a generous sized dark beige head that gradually faded. nice looking Stout

Smell: Brown sugar and mild coffee/roasted malt aromas. Not a bad nose but the aromas are subdued and mild.

Taste: The taste profile features moderate bourbon notes, brown sugar, roast malts, mild vanilla, and tannic oak notes. The finish is moderately dry ending with some Bourbon and tannic oak notes. Mild alcohol presence.

Mouth-feel: On the light side of medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation.

Overall: Another good Eclipse variant. The Bourbon bal-aging is present and results in some sweetness in the initial swallow but the beer dries out on the finish. The type of barrel used for bal-aging definitely is apparent in the eclipse variants.

The Joseph Magnus Barrel Aged Imperial Stout from Eclipse was a real surprise. I've never heard of it before and it is moderately rated but I found it to be really outstanding. It is a different but a very nice Imperial Stout.

Look: black with a half inch mocca colored head

Aroma: roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, bourbon

Flavor: roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, coffee, red wine, and a very significant amount of bourbon/Whiskey. It also is significantly carbonated, but this fits well within all the other flavors. This stout has it all.

Feel: full body, lot's of flavor, yet very drinkable

Bottle to snifter.

LOOK: thick dark black, full look, medium tan head. pretty good retention.
AROMA: mix of light whiskey and roasted malt upfront, some raisin, grape and red wine come in later.
TASTE: cola, raisin, later comes some wood and whiskey.
FEEL: medium carbonation for a stout, very smooth.

Pretty damn good for being not one of the more sought after variants. Sitting on a few others which I am pretty excited about. Especially the 2017 Belle Mead and the 2018 Vanilla Rye.

i am not familiar with this whiskey at all, so this was a fun one to try, not expecting anything good or bad from the barrel itself, just down to appreciate the beer, which was a little harder to do in some of the other variants of this where its like okay, this is great whiskey, i want to taste it specifically in the beer, here was more of a sit back and relax and just enjoy. one of the first of these i have had or even seen on tap, slick and near black in color, with a short lived tan head and a lot of body. the aroma is great, the big stout stands above the barrel to me, some whiskey here sure, some sweeter vanilla and fusel alcohol notes, but more than anything i get the dark roasty malts, an espresso and even a light smoke and char thing. i get a bit less of the honey in this one than i have in others, which is part of what i really love about this series of beers, i think sometimes it comes out better in older ones rather than the fresher ones i have had, not sure why that would be, but its been largely true in my experience. the whiskey isnt overly intense to me, but complimentary, kind of generic though, i am unable to get any real specific nuance from it like i have from others in the past. warming but never hotly alcoholic, even at temperature, and so smooth to drink on for its size. a really awesome beer, this whole series is legendary, and its always fun to get to try new ones! certainly not at the top of the list for me, but still a lot better than what so many others are doing with this style these days...

Another real good BBA Eclipse variant. The bourbon is not as hot in this one as some others and a bit sweeter; lots of toffee, caramel, and sweet bourbon. One of the better ones from last year.

Had this at the Eclipse Party 2017. I thought it was one of if not the best new variation/barrel of Eclipse I had that year. Never heard of the bourbon before, not a collector guy.

Anyways, the usual shit, pours black, 1/3" brown head on it. Aroma on this one went in hard on the wood. It was one of the more aggressive Eclipse beers in the nose I've had, honestly kind of reminded of the Pappy ones, was just bigger. To describe it as "hot" would be overly simplistic, it was big, but it brought a lot more than just a heavy waft of bourbon.

The taste was aggressive but manageable. Seemed like a whole lot of wet barrel and exposed wood went into this one, there was still the base of dark fudge like chocolate that tempered the vast amount of wood and bourbon that permeate the beer. It was somewhat a call back to the Splinter Black beer from Troegs, because that is the most wood influencced beer I can think of (liquified toothpicks) but like, that, plus bourbon barrel aged = this beer.

This one seemed to be more carbonated than usual for the eclipse stout series. The joseph magnus barrel definitely brought out the sharper flavors like the coffee, roasted malt, hints of barley and hops. Dark chocolate, toffee, molasses, still present back more in the background. Thinner feel than normal and slightly fizzy. Very rich and delicious though
