Notes: Now in its 13th vintage, 2020 Eclipse is our rich Imperial Stout aged to perfection in whiskey and spirits barrels. All Eclipse starts with the same base beer bringing hints of dark chocolate, espresso, and a smooth complexity, with each barrel treatment delivering its own unique character after a minimum of 180 days of aging. 3-Year Vertical is aged in bourbon barrels filled in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Drinking Jan 2022.

It's certainly not a "chocolate" beer in the sense a lot are overly done fake chocolate flavor but at the same time it is a sweet chocolate vibe to it overall.. Very smooth and well blended, albeit a little sweet of a finish for me..

Great beer overall, wish I had a few more stored away.

22 oz bottle into a snifter

After reviewing their Tiramisu version of their 2020 Eclipse release, which was possible the worst Eclipse yet, the pendulum swung to the other side with this one. All of the beautiful oaky, chocolatey,
bourbon-y notes expected in an Eclipse beer have been compounded and ‘smoothed’ out from blending. Dark chocolate seamlessly combines with raisin and butter rum and drying oak. Velvety complexion as usual…with all of the flavors so reigned in and harmonious, relatively short finish.

Probably the most complex yet quaffable of the series.

I absolutely love this series. Literally never disappointed, and every variant is both unique but also consistent. Just exceptional. And this is up there at the top — arguably the best save the excess sweetness. Amazing breadiness, deep dark fruits, incredible waves of chocolate, amazing medley of nuts with hazelnut front and center, tons of vanilla and oak, with a wonderful run of coconut. Wine tannins, even. Just a monumental nose. And the tongue absolutely follows, across the board, which could be near-perfect. But the sweetness is really up there. Approaches chocolate-covered candied cherry, which though spot-on, is just a touch over the top. Unfortunate that it overwhelms so many of the other notes, though you know they’re there because there are faint traces of each.

Pours pitch black color with a small tan head that faded on the faster side and left minimal spotty lacing, hissing and making crackling sounds the whole time the head receded. Smells of dark chocolate, booze, vanilla, cocoa powder, espresso beans, milk chocolate, burnt coffee grinds, hot fudge and a sweetness like caramel and molasses. Hints of oaky barrel notes trickle through the rich chocolate aromas.

Tastes roasty and like smoked malt up front before the chocolate kicks in with the same lineup as the nose: dark chocolate, vanilla, cocoa powder, espresso beans, milk chocolate, burnt coffee grinds, hot fudge and a sweetness like caramel and molasses, and then bourbon. Some dark fruit and red wine flavors come through, along with piney notes and some peat moss, but this stout hit my tastebuds with wave after wave of rich chocolate and smoked malts. Incredibly smooth for such a complex and heavy beer, this got better and more flavorful as it warmed up.

Super rich nose. Chocolate, dark fruit raisins. Some woody notes. Vintage.

Lots of nice blending happening here. Raisins, chocolate, bourbon.

Feel is smooth, lightly carbonated.
