A friend picked up a sixer in Virginia for me (not available in DC) for about $8 I believe. Great value for my dollar. Poured into a DFH snifter for this review.
Appearance (3): Dark brown with ruby edges. Pours with a thick finger of cream colored head which quickly thins to just a layer on top and a ring around the edges. Not a lot of retention and nearly no lacing.
Smell (4.5): Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate. Powdered cocoa dominates but there is a touch of sweetness and definitely some roastiness. Very good.
Taste (4): Follows the nose at first but is also sweeter and the hops come through. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder is up front with a touch of bitterness. The middle has sweet chocolate and some pine from the hops. The finish is dominated by a lingering caramel finish and touch more bitterness. The bitterness is very subtle however and is hardly noticeable. The somewhat floral hoppiness sticks around along with the lingering sweetness; definitely doesn't overdo it with the residual sugars however.
Mouthfeel (4.5): Very, very creamy and smooth. The finish is like a milkshake or a root beer float; very soft and pleasant. The body is on the full side of medium and the carbonation is a little higher than expected. This gives a little bit of a liveliness on the back of the tongue that contributes to that soft feel.
Overall (4): I really like this porter. It is something that I sought out after having at Oktoberfest in Shirlington, then the Black Squirrel, and I will continue to pick up when I see it. For the low cost, there are not many better porters imo.

Half an inch of light tan head that collapses quite quickly. Very dark brown with garnet hues when put to the light. No visible carbonation and o.k lacing around the glass.
Strong chocolate, burnt sugar, and toffee from the get-go. Coffee tones become more apparent. Hop aroma isn't perceptible.
Very rich and smooth malt flavor- light roast coffee and cocoa powder, with a pleasant sweetness. Sugary aftertaste without any residual bitterness. Very agreeable.
Medium-full body with very low carbonation. No astringency or bitterness whatsoever, very smooth.
A delectable Porter. Like coffee with creamer. A brew for the winter or dessert by a fireplace.

Slightly bitter (English bitter like) and leaning chocolatey - solid interpretation of the style.

Not my cup of tea. Maybe the "colonial" style, but to me it has an aftertaste of ashtray.
