A- Pours just about black with some faint ruby highlights, has a nice finger and a half of creamy tan head.

S- Coffee, roasted malt, some milky light chocolate.

T- Loads of roasted malts with coffee, lots of chocolate and a good dose of char. Hops linger in the background and provide some balance. Towards the finish there are some semisweet malts before a dry, heavily roasted finish.

M- Medium bodied, carbonation is a bit light but the feel overall is very creamy and smooth. It's maybe a bit on the watery side but the drinkability is through the roof.

O- A pretty solid porter, I love it when these are done with lots of char and smoke. Highly drinkable, I could go through a couple pints of this with no trouble at all.

On tap at Jupiter on 7/14/09.

A - Extremely dark brown, almost black body with slim creamy beige head (almost purple-ish, in fact) that settled into a patchy retention and spotty lace.

S - Roasty malt nose with coffee and subtle chocolate notes. Some smokey and earthy notes round out the aroma profile.

T - Opens with coffee and subtle chocolate notes, then segues into a really earthy, herbal hop character in the middle. Some smoke and char also appears in the mix. Finishes with more chocolate and an earthy hop tinge with plenty of roasty malt goodness. Pretty complex flavor profile overall.

M - Medium body a softly carbonated mouthfeel, albeit a litle thin and watery overall, although there is a hint of bristle on the tongue. Earthy, astringent and slightly metallic finish with a moderate hop bitterness on the palate.

D - Pretty good porter, though I preferred the DIPA. Mouthfeel was a bit too thin for the style. Still, this was a tasty porter with an extremely roasty and earthy character.

A: Pours almost black with a thick head. If held to the light can just make out deep crimson.
S: Smells of cocoa and coffee beans.
T: Tastes of smokey malts up front and cocoa. The finish begins sweet but then ends with a dry, coffee-like finish. It tastes almost exactly like Jupiter's dry stout. A little less creamy, but I almost thought they mixed up drinks when I first tasted it.
M: A little thinner and more carbonated than I was expecting, but still smooth.
D: Overall a good American porter. Haven't had too many of the style yet; more into sweeter porters with less of a smokey flavor. Probably wouldn't have more than one in a sitting, but will get it again.

This is my regular brew when I visit Jupiter or their sattellite site, the Bear's Lair Brew Pub on the UC Berkeley Campus.

The beer pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head. But I think the bartenders are used to pouring for college students who want their beers poured to the top, and don't understand a good head.

The aroma has some chocolate maltiness, some coffee notes.

The taste is dominated by the chocolate malt and coffee. Not very subtle. there is some hops there in the finish but not much.

Good for a glass or two, but not a session beer, it is pretty heavey and its 7% alcohol will sit you down faster than their other lighter brews.

To my knowledge this is only available at the two brew pubs so if you are ever at either of them in is not a bad one to get if you are a fan of the porter.
