Stegmaier Oktoberfest is brewed as a traditional German-style Marzen. It is a deep reddish-brown lager brewed with traditional German malt and hops to give the beer a full toasted character with a touch of sweetness. Aromas of sweet pumpernickel bread make this the ideal beer to welcome in the autumn season.

12 oz bottle poured into tulip glass

A - Light chestnut with amber hues, 1/2 inch white heads, little retention or lacing

S - Deep bready malt, sweet caramel (almost artificial)

T - Bready, sweet malt, caramel, light fruit esters (apple), dose of diacetyl, finishes with an off black pepper flavor

M - Medium body, decent carbonation, finishes dry

D - Both smell and taste start off pleasantly with even some high notes in the taste (hints of apple and light fruits) but finishes poorly. Flaws and off flavors stand out and for this reason this is not a brew I would probably ever reach for again.

A sloppy, mess of a malt slurry...super buttery diacetyl off flavors derails things from the get go, just really bad, it was difficult to finish off the glass i had

Poured into a dimpled mug.

L - Opaque caramel, a cream colored head that recedes to a film. Barely any lacing.

A - Faint caramel, dried grass, grapes and gasoline????

T - Fermented apples, white grapes, and rubbing alcohol ?????

M - Dry.

O - Domestic Beer trying to confuse the buyer into thinking it's some hidden gem. This was awful.

DATE: September 14, 2017... OCCASION: Thursday night relaxation... GLASSWARE: Ayinger willibecker... what is immediately noticeable immediately is its thick, pillowed white head that holds a three-finger stance until it laces with robust thickness... reasonable effervescence makes its way through a dark red body--fitting for a fest... the aroma is dank with caramel, dough malts, with some noble hops suggesting spiciness (licorice? pepper?)... some pine too, with vegetable also present... a thin, oily feel with some flourish at the throat... swift in its passage, with little texture to speak of... light bodied, with an apologetic softness that tingles--odd mouthfeel that causes one to wonder why... the caramel is not so heavy as it is lithesome and sweet... the flavor profile is much like its aroma, with the caramel sweetly piquing the taste buds... iced tea, mint (?), grainy woods, and apple/pear sweetness... overall, a flat, sweet approximation of what an Oktoberfest should be... a borderline rinser... serviceable, but not worth seeking out this season...

Poured into a custom shaped glass: color is a darker copper, head is off white and the head presents about 1/2 inch thick then dissipates to a ring with no lacing.

Smell is caramel more than munich malt, a touch of earthy hops; a little on the sweet side.

Taste continues the trend of sweeter, caramel like flavor presented in the aroma; I think the malt bill just leans on some caramel or sweeter adjunct malts to back up the prime malt; hops are crisp, earthy light spice.

Mouthfeel is on the sweet side, not cloying but the maltiness with minor bitterness is evident.

Overall, this is another decent seasonal lager style beer from Stegmaier; not great but in the realm of good beer in an underappreciated style.

Purchased in a mixed six at a Wegmans on my recent trip to western Pennsylvania.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams nonick.

a: Clear copper with a finger thick offwhite head which receded to thin surface foam and spotty lacing.

s: Mild caramel malt and some ripe light fruit.

t: Follows the nose along with some light hop bite. Sweet to dry finish.

m: Medium with good body, lots of carbonation tingle.

o; A very good Marzen, would like still more caramel maltiness myself, but this one is very drinkable and right for the Fall season.
