Poured from a 12 oz. twist-off bottle into a snifter; aged for one year and served at cellar temperature.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful mahogany with dark burgundy highlights. One-inch tan head with small bubbles which quickly dissipates into a ring and filmy surface.

Smell: Candy-sweet and warm winter spices with rich malt aromas up front. Strong notes of vanilla and oak with hints of banana and candied cherry. Deep sniffs reveal a nostalgic scent reminiscent of fresh-baked sugar cookies.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Sweet and rich malt up front with faint hop bitterness in the middle. Finishes with a rustic pumpernickel breadiness and mild alcohol note; mellow spice rounds out the palate. It's a medium-full bodied winter brew with smooth carbonation that barely bites.

Drinkability: Its winter warmer ABV is not apparent in the aroma or taste. The rich and smooth body make it very easy to drink. Perfect as an after dinner brew.

A bit weak for a Winter Warmer. Needs a lot more flavor of spices to really get this brew up to par. The color was nice, it was on the darker side. I was getting some hints of roasted spice on the nose. Wasn't anything too crazy going on in this brew but it wasn't the best Winter Warmer I've ever had.

This beer looks interesting. Like a very dark IPA. One taste dispels the IPA rumors. This is a very German tasting bock or dopplebock style beer. and very good, too. Self described as an old world ale, whatever, I like this. Malty, slightly hoppy, full bodied, very tasty.Lion Brewery of Pennsylvania, I salute you.

Review is from notes taken on 2/15/2010 and poured from the bottle to a pint glass. Special thanks to beerman207 for hooking me up with this one.

Appearance: Pours a murky and dark toffee brown; starts with a nice two finger head that is the color of froth on a latte with solid retention and leaves a full web of lacing as it dwindles slowly to a thick and chewy looking full skim; body is cloudy but still shows moderate to light carbonation.

Smell: Nice caramel malts and a certain musty spiciness that is reminiscent of nutmeg and cinnamon; smell is fairly robust. As it warms, there is a slight citrusy/orange presence that starts to sneak in as well.

Taste: Very much like the smell -- nice and sweet chewy caramel malts that are well complimented by the warm spices of nutmeg and cinnamon; there is a slight coppery bite in the back of each sip though and that does hurt the scoring a little bit, but still pretty solid throughout; as it warms, there is an interesting citrusy and orange hoppiness that sneaks in.

Mouthfeel: Body is moderately thick and chewy; carbonation is soft and smooth; a nice stickiness left on the roof of the mouth and the belly is left warm.

Drinkability: Definitely solid enough -- great flavors, warmth and feel from the body and weight; the only real downer is that coppery bite in the taste.

A-pour an orangy copper with a nice inch or so white head that soon dissapears but leaves some lacing
S-bready malt, an a bit of dark fruit with a nice balance of the usual winter spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg)the spices aren't too dominate but has a perfect balance and compliments the beer nicely
T-a nice malt taste yet again balanced nicely by the spices not really complex but very good and very refreshing
M-medium light body with a moderate carbonation gives this beer a nice full feel and provides the "warmer" part the beer
D-extremly drinkable i usually will end up taking this over a friends house for the night and have no problem drinking throughout the night and is only like a scoach over $20 a case and is definately highly reccomended

A: Deep orange/red color with a decent head that finishes with a skim that hangs out for a while.

S: Smell is of cinnamon, dark fruit, hops, other spices. Very nice.

T: Very cool flavor. This beer calls itself an "old world ale" which is pretty fitting as this warmer seems to be a cousin of an old ale. There are definitely some figs or other dark fruit present in this. The spices are well balanced in here as well.

M: Honestly, the mouthfeel could be a bit better. I thought this was a bit thin.

D: Very high. I got this for $3.99 for a six pack at Jungle Jims over in Cincinnati, OH. If you can get your hands on it for that price, you won't be sorry.

I found this beer while perusing my local beer market and it was being sold for $3.99 for a six-pack.

I asked the store manager if he'd ever sampled the beer before, and he said it was 'Pretty decent. He wouldn't pay $8.99 for it, but at $3.99, it was definitely a steal.'

Appearance: Poured a copper color with moderate, creamy head.

Smell: Sweet smell, with hints of cinnamon and spices. Could even smell the alcohol a bit.

Taste: Very pleasant actually. The alcohol was hidden well. Nice citrusy-hop taste.

MF: Decently thick feel, a little bitter, but a good finish.

Drinkability: Very drinkable. I'm actually going to probably check and see if I can find some more this week. I consumed them slowly, with dinner and then just by themselves.

Solid beer, especially for $3.99

Pours chestnut with 1" of tan head. Good head retention & above average lacing

S: Fruityness, cinnamon & brown sugar, plus leafy hops & tobacco

T: Brown bread, dryness leafy hops, & a touch of figs & cherries up front. More of the same with pronounced oaky dryness. Finishes dry, fruitty with cherries, leafy hops & more brown sugar

MF: Chewy with a touch too much carbonation

Drank okay, although the ABV is well hidden, the flavors don't really meld together as well as i hoped. This would do in a pinch...

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle(no freshness date) into a standard pint glass
Cloudy copper in color with a thin, tan head of foam
Aroma-Spices and whiff of alchohol
Taste-Not sure if this was an old bottle of last year's brew-Taste was rather thick and chewy, cinnamon and a big mix of spices-unbalanced and a bit dissapointing-Seems to get thin as it warms

A 12 ounce bottle poured into a nonic Imperial pint glass. Appears a clear deep crimson brown color with about a finger of creamy, lingering light ecru foam. Aroma and flavor consist of medium toasted grains, biscuits, caramelized malt, light spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. A bit better than medium bodied and amply carbonated for the style. Worth a try next time it rolls around.

(2008 version) A dark mahogany red color with a thin off-white head and modest lacing. The aroma is sour apple and raisin with vanilla malt. The flavor brings nutty malt and cinnamon with bright mellon apple and lots of clove. It's somewhat thin for a winter brew and pretty drinkable. Lively carbonation and overall a very solid effort from Stegmaier especially if you enjoy a hint of the Belgian style in your winter warmer.

(update for 2009 version) A rosey copper color, clear but dark with a good sized light vanilla colored head and nice lacing. The aroma is a deep malt with a raspberry juniper, nutmeg and cinnamon. The flavor is a very malty with a citrus hop and cherry highlights. There's some coffee bitterness and more of that juniper brightness. It's a nice mid-bodied brew with a somewhat resinous feel yet it offers a lively carbonation drinkability. It's pretty complex, with holiday notes over the solid malt/hop base. Very nice, something that should be enjoyable alone, with food, room temperature or cold. Nice job.

Got this one from number1bum recently, thanks pansy.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a pretty clear ruby brown with a nice two finger light khaki colored head that stays for quite a while with bits of lacing here and there remaining on the sides of the glass. Not much in the nose, but what's there consists of some caramel malts, roasted nuts, and some spice. Taste is a bit more complex, but not exactly tasty. Chocolate malt, cinnamon, and earthy notes. There's a woody cardboard flavor that seems to linger from start to finish that I'm not really liking too much. Aftertaste is pretty spicy and warm with a molasses sweetness. Medium body with a chewy feel and a steady carbonation. I'd have to say this is a pretty average warme. I'm not a huge fan of the style but it's nice to have one every now and then. Thanks again Josh for the opportunity, and don't even think about givning me another Lancaster Strawberry Wheat.

Another gift-basket beer from brother Bob--nice! Dark orange brown body that is deep enough to appear hearty... head is off-white, single-fingered and swiftly scattered... fresh, malty presence that offers some soft cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices (take note, Harpoon) pleasant but not overstated... live, vivacious, effervescent and much hoppier than expected-- a bit smoother as the glass drains... nicely balanced, a bit roasted and surprisingly hopped to a pleasant flourish-- a bit of "Coke" late... a brewery that's conjured the images of dank coal basements and the smells of Penna. beer stores turns out a solid celebrator for the season. Wouldn't have picked this one up, and shame on me for relying on appearance and association...

I had this on tap at Cobblestone's in York. Served cold in a pint
A - A slightly murky tarnished copper color w/ a smallish tan head that doesn't cling to the glass -no lace.

S - A malty sweet smell w/ caramel malt emphasis. The smell is fruity, almost vinous w/ a nice spice hint and a touch of vanilla

M - a lightly carbonated feel w/ slightly dull drop on the palate w/ malt and yeast that seem lackluster feel-wise. The sweetness is overdone with no real spice or pizzazz

T - The flavor has elements of dy and sweet crystal malt w/ subtle chocolate malt presence and a nice tangy yeast note which has an English character - the hops don't give much in the way of flavor, but balance the beer's sweetness w/ a subtle bitterness and the flavor is clean and sweet into the finish

D - An ok seasonal, but I prefer the German styles from this brewery. This is not bad overall drinkability-wise, but generally I would say just worth a try
