This years version of this puppy was unveiled at Barley's annual Oysters and Stout night on April 15 to celebrate tax day. While there were about 8 other stouts on tap including St. Joan's normal, and St. Joan's on Nitro this was a gem and the only thing I drank because I couldn't put it down.

It was dark and viscous, with tremendous head retention for the entire length of the beer. This thing will get you drunk and quick. It has to be upwards of 10%, but drinks like a 5% beer. The Bourbon flavor wasn't too strong but rather the vanilla flavor came through.

It reminded me a lot of KBS in the use of coffee and chocolate flavors that are then balanced by the bourbon and vanilla flavors. They only made 50 gallons of this so run quick it is definitely worth it.

Also sampled this beer from firkin on the 29th of September. And i'm damn glad I made the drive from Dayton to do so. Aged in barrel for one year.

Black, inky, and suffocating. Head was lighter than expected considering the color of the beer; off white and smalle, dissipated quickly leaving a ring.

Bourbon & oak lead into creamy vanilla, bitter chocolate and hints of tofee. Even slight hints of coffee is you breathe deep enough.

Oily, thick, viscous mouth. A blast of bourbon, vanilla toasted oak. Plum, black currant and rich thick syrupy dark chocolate. Complex and very well balanced. Some alcohol present but as mentioned it lends itself very well to the bourbon and dark fruit flavors. Finish on this beauty is very long.

Would love to try this again as well as many other Barley's brews. Too bad I'm in Dayton. But I will be making the journey again soon to try the Barley wine they ran out at alehouse one before I got there this same night.
