12 oz.

Pours a light yellowy gold, not quite crystal clear, with a fine white head. Dissipates to a film.

Smells grainy and mildly sweet.

Tastes grainy, with some barley bitterness, and a bit of sweet malt.

Feels moderate with mild carbonation.

Good, easy to drink and sessionable. Refreshing after a warm day. Another winner from Big Boss.

On-tap at Big Boss Brewing, Raleigh, NC

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a slight amount of carbonation. It poured with a thin bright white head that slowly faded away and left lacy patterns of bubbles floating on the surface.
S: There are aromas of biscuit malts and fruit in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has a slight amount of sweetness as well as a mild to moderate amount of hop bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is easy to drink and is quite refreshing. It's much more flavorful than a typical kölsch.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy straw color with a modest head that leaves a few dots behind

Smell: On the malty end for the style, with a bready character

Taste: Biscuity, up front, and slightly sweet, with a developing hint of caramel; after the swallow, a vague sense of floral hops appears but fails to make much of a stand, as the finish is still rather sweet

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with crisp carbonation

Drinkability: Enjoyable, and if you don't mind the sweetness and lack of hops, it is a very pleasant drinker

Poured into a cylinder glass a clear dull light golden with a thinner white head atop, very clean aromas just a hint of white grape and some toasted grain.Flavors are much different than expected, white grape and a butteriness that I dont think should have been there but it wasnt all that bad just not supposed to be that way.Its gotta decent toasty cereal-like finish but I cant get over the buttery-caramelly flavors, this is a kolsch style right?

** Note: I mentioned my tasting experience to a friend who encouraged me to take another stab at Angry Angel. I'm glad I did. The first bottle I tried was just off. The second was very enjoyable and the notes below are from the second tasting. This is a revised review. **

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Orange gold color, slight haze, with an attractive uneven foam head of about 2 fingers or so. Head has some good retention and leaves behind some heavy lacing. Nice to look at.

The aroma on this was different than anything I recall having experienced before. It has a sort of a blend of significant butterscotch and some faint yeast & malt smells. It's a little different from most but it works.

An interesting experience. A good long pull yields a good smooth slightly musty sweet malt with just a hint of an astringent twist. The hops are very... earthy. Balance is present but tips toward the malt. The carbonation helps with a bit of creaminess - fine but persistent bubbles that remain prickly on the tongue. The finish is relatively quick with a slightly watery linger.

A reasonably flavorful and thirst quenching brew. Nice tones of grainy malt and some interesting hops but the star of this show is in the malt. That slightly watery finish makes you want to take another pull and experience the flavor all over again. I'm glad I tried this a second time because I enjoyed it much more on the second round.

Big Boss Angry Angel is a beer I received as part of a mix of local beers from a friend for Christmas. I only just now got to reviewing it because I've been on a diet, but tonight I decided I deserved a beer and I figured this would be light and not too bad of a cheat.

The beer is yellowish amber, not as pale as I am used to for a Kolsch, but not bad. It was a bit hazy and there were little bits floating in it, which should not be in a light lager like this. There was also very little head, which is disappointing and it kept the aromas from really being expressed. The zesty noble hops are apparent as is a sweet yeasty bread in the nose. The beer is slightly sweet with a pear or grape-like fruitiness with a crisp bitterness that does a good job of balance. The beer is definitely on the light end, but very refreshing. The aftertaste is dry with a little bit of toasted grain that persists and there is a nice bit of acidity and bit from the carbonation.

This is a very excellent, easy drinking beer that readily quenches my thirst. Definitely not the most complex beer, but for the style, this is a very good example and one I would definitely welcome more of.

12 oz bottle dated July 2011 (production date).

pours a hazy yellow straw color with a small, fragile white head. Some sediment was left on the bottom of the bottle; a portion of this was added mid-tasting.

The aroma is faint but pleasant, featuring pale malt with a hint of floral hops. ... yes, there is more than a trace of hops here, leaving a reported IBU of 20. The flavor largely follows the aroma. However, this is very mildly bitter although it smells a bit sweet. Also, a lightly baked biscuit flavor and a hint of citrus come out in the taste.

M - light bodied; semi-dry finish

O - as expected for style, this is not very flavorful or aromatic. This Kolsch is well-balanced and easily recommended if you like this style. It is refreshing and thirst quenching.

Darker than expected, this beer is a hazy dark yellow. The white head isn't large but is sustained by the champagne-like effervescent activity and holds up creamy and firm. Lace that's just as creamy sticks well to the glass.
It's fairly dry, certainly biscuity and almost crackery in the malts, but could have a bit more dryness. Pale, juicy and zesty fruits abound, along with underlying must that's not quite vinous and a gentle peppery bite.
Hops adds a bit of leafy dryness and a musty earthiness. Sweetness is kept in check and the hops add more balance than the nose has, but it never goes dry enough.
The body is in the medium range, creamy with some heft. Spiciness bite gently, crispness is firm, and the body lightens nicely as it goes.

Now to rate a bottle of this. Looks a nice golden straw color topped by an extra white fine fuzz head. No lasting lace but a nice 1/8" layer remains over the beer once the head dissipates. Aroma is made up of spice, pepper, dry grape, and toasted malt. Easy and enjoyable to inhale. Taste matches very well. Nice light bitterness, and dry briskness. Feels smooth, sliiiightly resinous, with good pepper-like tingly carbonation, and a refreshing but unexpected cooling sensation through the finish. Perhaps a mint-like feeling but not a flavor or smell. Very very drinikable to say the least.

I'll certainly pick up more bottles or growlers of this in the next few hot spring + summer months.

On tap at the brewery's tasting room.

Pours a clear gold with no head. Smells faintly of straw. Taste wheat/straw with very light bitterness. The flavors are so light as to almost call it nondescript. Little carbonation and light bodied.

Too thin and light. There are better Kolsch-style beers out there.

12 oz bottle into a stange.

Pours a crystal clear gold, with a finger of frothy bright-white head. Thin yet still rich retention yields a strong cascade of creamy lacing. The aroma is fresh and pleasant in the nose, with a floral perfume-like character and notes of lemon zest and sweet grains.

The taste is sweet with lightly toasted biscuit character which mixes in with some gentle fruity flavors. Dry spicy hops prickle the tongue, lingering into the finish and parching the palate a little. The mouthfeel is lighter bodied but still has a decent amount of presence in the mouth, with a firm crispness to the carbonation which keeps this refreshing.

This was a quality take on the Kölsch-Style, that while not being most flavorful I've had, still brought enough to the table to stay interesting and quite drinkable.

Enjoyed on a warm autumn day from a bottle given to me by Deaune. First beer I have had the chance to sample from Big Boss.

A--pleasant golden straw color with a thin lacy head

S--little bit yeasty but nothing to offend nor excite here

T--crisp initial taste with a bit of biscuit, some hop presence in the aftertaste

M--smooth and simple, not overdone

D--easy to down a few of these on a warm day, not especially memorable but enjoyable

Overall not my favorite style of beer but this is a good representation of the style and a solid effort, I look forward to trying my bottles of their brown and belgian.

Served from tap into a shaker. Poured straw yellow with a one finger pure white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, wheat, and earthy notes. The flavor was of sweet malt, wheat, earthy, nutty, and subtle spices. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a nice brew. It was not awe-inspiring by any means, but still good. It had a fairly weak aroma to it, but the flavor was pretty complex and refreshing for a Kölsch. I would recommend this to a person coming to the craft beer scene, but not for a die-hard craft beer junkie though.

On-tap at Woody's @ City Market, Raleigh, NC

Served a nice rich clear golden color, darker than expected of the style, with a decent thick and dense white head with decent retention that left a small thin cap. Also noticeable carbonation streaming to the top of the glass.

Light aroma, good balance between the malted barley and the floral hops with perhaps a hint of a biscuit as well.

The taste was better than the aroma led and to be honest the taste was better than expected. A lot of times with beers of this ABV you expect a watered down, no real taste kind of beer. This beer had a really good, stronger than expected taste with a nice balance of malted barley and hops. The beer also had a little spice to it that really kicked it up a notch.

The beer was light and smooth with a dry aftertaste. The beer had the right amount of carbonation and was very drinkable.

Overall, I think that this is a style that is very much unappreciated and often over-looked as it does not have that "kick you in the teeth" kind of powerful flavor or appearance, for that matter, but this beer would be a good starter if you are interested in trying the style.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, some breadiness. Taste is crisp, hops, floral notes, some malts, bitter at the finish, refreshing. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

A 12 oz bottle picked up at Chip's in Kill Devil Hills, NC last month.

A: The ale pours with a lighter yellow color but as it sits in the glass it takes on a hazy, dirty tang color. Not much head to speak of.

S: The aroma is malty, fruity with a toasted warmth. Nops add some crispness but not a lot.

T: The body is rather full, reflecting a fruity flavor that is a nice by-product of the yeast. The bready malts, toasted and biscuity, mask most of the hop presense, allowing only a touch of bitterness to emerge.

M: I am impressed by the fullness of the malt body, it made the ale for me.

D: I am pleased with this one, a solid ale that packs a nice flavor. Definitely underrated.
