Served in a goblet from the bottle.

Appearance: Thin brown body with opaqueness to it. Head is light with a tan or orange tinted white. Rose to maybe half a fingers length.

Smell: Light whiskey notes and tad whiff of toffee.

Taste: Sweet yeast with honey notes and malts which come off pretty powerful and offset with a shot of whiskey.

Mouth: Sticky. Medium carbonation at best which dissipates quickly before finishing the glass.

Overall: Good brew which resembles some English barleywine but obviously some bread features make you look the other way. Salud!

2014 bottle pour to challis, brown with active, thin beige head, no retention or lacing. Nose of a Belgian ale, spice, candy. Taste woody, slight bourbon, boozy with Belgian yeast background. Feel is quite thin with good bubbly sensation despite total dissipation of head.

From La tienda de la cerveza. In Teku glass. Playing Avernum 2. Typical flavors of the style (dark fruits, raisins) with a body that feels lighter and more smooth than usual.Abv and bourbon totally hidden

Dark brown, approaching black, with a half finger of creamy tan head that lasts a good while for a quad.

Fig, toffee, chocolate, vanilla, whisky, a little spice and maybe even a hint of coffee in the nose.

These continue to the taste with a touch more of the barrel presence showing, although still relatively light, and some earthy bitterness and hint of alcohol added to the mix.

A little thin bodied for the style with strong carbonation. Pleasant, but a bit more refined than I expected. 2014 vintage.

Sampling a 33cl bottle, vintage 2014, courtesy of my good friend Thijs.

Poured into a small tulip, it is an opaque deep chestnut color. Cannot see anything through it, even when backlit. Head is a creamy but thin layer of fine beige bubbles. Lacing is decent though nothing fancy. Aroma is of dark, vinous fruit masked by some mild bourbon. Body is a good medium, and it's rather smooth and light on the prickle.

Flavor has more dark fruit, like raisins, dates and figs. Bourbon is mild, and there is a subtle rye spicy character. Has a smidge of toffee and a touch of something akin to cloves before the dry finish. Solid all around. Cheers!

Is this a beer or a great wine ?
It reminds me of good Saint Joseph (côte du Rhône).

L - Dark brown with a beige lacing head

S - Good complexity of toffee, bourbon, herbal hops and oak.

T - that's a wine made out of Syrah and Grenache or what? The faint tartness is followed by the red berries (Syrah), the peppercorn (Grenache) and the toffee that reminds you that's a beer and not a wine. The oak is there all along.

M - low carbonation and smooth mouthfeel,

O - this beer grows on you, it's unique and I love it.
