Notes: Old Fisherman's Ale is a dark ale brewed with spices. Pannepot is a term that describes the Fishing Boats from the village of De Panne. Brewed and bottled on the Deca Brewery in Woesten-Vleteren.

Dark mahogany with small tan head. Dark fruits, cherry cola, leather and a good amount of chocolate in the nose. Thick, slightly syrupy mouthfeel typical of the style with warming alcohol present up front. Similar flavors as the aroma, along with a hint of anise and other spices. Pretty good. Left it alone on the kitchen counter for a few minutes and it attracted fruit flies I didn't even know we had.

This beer pours from 11.2oz bottle(2006 lot E 5 BB) (whoa, it started almost literally foaming out of the bottle as soon as the cap came off but...I was ready with my glass. ;^) a very cloudy, very dark brown with lots of bubbles, a huge expanding head of tannish foam and it has lots of sticky lacing. It's a very attractive looking brew.

The smell has notes of yeast, dark fruit, some citrus, and a slight medicinal nose.

The taste ...oh, wow. I'm getting a lot of caramel malt, dark fruit like raisins & plums and figs and just a slight hop bitterness in the background but man, this is one malty delicious concoction. The alcohol is there but it just shows up as a bit of warming after the swallow and that puts it in the "dangerously drinkable" category for me.

Yummy...the mouthfeel is pretty thick and chewy(that's a plus for the style) and though I mentioned there were a lot of bubbles when I poured this puppy, the carbonation level is no more than medium light. Absolutely delicious. A fantastic example of the style and I can see why it is so highly regarded. I wonder if I can get this in Colorado?? Seriously, for me, this ranks right up there with the best Quad I've ever had. Would I seek it out again? What do you think? lol

Bottom line: A malty and spicy and very tasty Quadrupel that my taste buds just can't get enough of. Thanks again with the deepest of appreciation, Joe!!!

2011 vintage. Lot 2015190511-24FF.

Pours an opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, spice, and slight cardboard aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, molasses, fruit, and roast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and a slight alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with an interesting mix of aromas and flavors all around.

2011 Vintage.

Pours dark auburn brown with minimal head. Smells heavily of brown sugar and caramel with fruitcake spiciness. Tastes with a big tart dark fruit punch up front- plum, dark cherry, raisins, boozy port wine notes, held down at the end by a "holiday-esque" spice profile- nutmeg, allspice, and heavy dark caramel and molasses sweetness. Feel is dense and soft, making the flavors linger for a long time. Great beer. Classic.

2006. Gushing. But it pushes forth a phenomenal aroma of incredible unique character. There’s a flow of steady north african spices, exotic asian fruits and nips of candied pipe tobacco smoke. A totally unique aroma, like nothing I’ve breathed before. Musky, yeasty, spicy rich and bold, with creamy black tea notes, faint black cardamom and rich swirls of smoked malt breadiness. Phenomenal. The perfect intensity, allowing all nuances of the aroma to expressive individually, before melding into a one perfumy bliss. Heat nor yeast nor hops dominate aroma. Pours an intimidating deep dark near black mahogany, with a sticky head of tea and milk foam. In the corner a cut of garnet, glowing strongly. On the tongue, a whole new array of flavors and complexity. This is ridiculous. First I grab a real bright passionfruit bubblegum yeast soap, which is actually this beer’s weakest point, but then it yields to a growing warmth in calvados and pear brandies. The residual sweetness slides into a terrific wallop of deep caramels and emaciated raisins, with a toothy bread climbing out of a pot of honey. Intense chewiness with a real backbone. Beer slides off the tongue gracefully, kissing the roof of the mouth with a refined hazlenut and almond bite. A wisp of danish pipe tobacco curls up through the humors. Spices provide a nice base and accentuate the yeast and malt characters. Hopping appears briefly as a sweet lemon rind note in the smack. There are some fantastic sweet fresh maple syrup notes and freshly cut tobacco wood touches that briefly alight out the backdoor. Somehow a little harsh to my nostils and tongue, and the sticky malt notes grow slightly cloying. But to experience such astounding new flavors and nuances, this beer is fantastic. I love the airy quality of quaffablity that comes from the yeast attenuation. Expertly crafted and above all others. The best part is that I keep finding new things in the beers as my palate adapts, now a growing sense of ground fresh ginger root and gentle alder smoke. One of the most intricate beers.

Found a bottle of 2014 and decided to pick it up since I was pleased with the Reserve variant. WOW. You talk about a quality Quad here....this goes in the class of St Bernardus and Westy IMO. Absolutely well constructed and tasty as hell. Easily drinkable at 10% ABV, too.

I picked up a 300ml bottle in a trade somewhere. Vintage 2007. Popped today on Sept 29, 2010.

Overall: man this is absolutely fantastic. Deep, layered, lively, sublime aftertaste. I've never given an A+ before till now. I needs me more.

Smell: all at once I get cinnamon, caramel, and red cherries with pits...maybe some star anise. Nice, full, but not overwhelming aroma.

Taste: amazing. Layered malt and caramel, more red-cherries with pits, some cinnamon. Similar to aroma but heavier on the malts. Clearly some interesting belgian-yeast esters happening here.

Mouthfeel: very lively. The ONLY thing I'd tweak is dropping the carbonation slightly. Then again that might make the sweet malt drop flat on the palette. Alcohol is present, but not nearly as present as most 10% abv'ers.

Appearance: head retention too low, but beer is sufficiently carbonated, very dark brown in color (appears almost like a non-robust porter).

Ridiculously delicious.

2014. vintage. Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Everything about this screams caramel and licorice. These predominate on the nose and palate, with notes of tart cherry and dark bread in the background. Very sweet finish, with a slight black-licorice and burnt coffee aftertaste. More tartness and astringency as it warms, but never gets boozy despite the high (10%) ABV. A solid Belgian quad, and a pretty classy label to boot.

A : Pours a nice dark red/brown color with a good head that leaves some nice lacing behind

S : A thing of beauty. A huge malt aroma with some dark fruits and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg).

T : Strong sweet malt flavor. You can definitely pick up some dark fruit flavors, some spices, maybe some chocolate also

M : Full-bodied, good carbonation, the alcohol really doesn't make it's presence known

D : It's one that I'd love to have again but I could see only having one bottle at a time.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black in fact. Ochre head, nice density but settles out to a thin film. Sticky lace. Looks nice.

Smells strong. Ethanoic, with sticky fig, sour cherry, vanilla, carob and Benedictine. Bit oversweet, and strong.

Tastes very Belgian. Slight sourness, with spicy phenols. Earthy spice, with a bitter earthy taste. Woody and smokey as well, with a medicine character on the back. Nectarine as well. there's definitely a lot of craftsmanship here, but I'm not getting anything amazing or even particularly complex from it.

Mouthfeel is very heavy and quite boozey, but reasonably silky. Not bad.

A good beer, but I'm really surprised to see the overwhelming love for it here. It's possible the bottle may have been old, but I simply didn't really connect with this. Either way I don't think my disappointment will be anything but a slight statistical blip in the lovefest here, so don't mind me, I'm just passing through.

Bought all vintage 0,33 bottles in beer shop in Brussels. This is 2009.

A: Pours dark chocolate brown almost opaque color with good slightly off-white head into properly washed glass. Good lacing.

S: Dried dark fruits, malt, maybe some molasses, hint of caramel and chocolate.

T: Tongue follows the nose. Dried dark fruits mashed with malt, some molasses and caramel character. A hint of spiciness which rounds the beer. Overall very balanced with a touch of alcohol.

O: Definitely will buy again as many as I'll find. I always enjoy quads. Maybe I'll even put some age on newer ones.
