A 2012 vintage bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours a dark red-brown, almost black in the glass. Ruby highlights around the edges. Light 1 finger carbonation, which fades almost immediately to lacing.

Aroma is of dark caramel and dark fruits which a little fruity wine flavors. There's a little chocolate and coffee.

The flavor has so much going on it's a little hard to describe. It tastes of dark fruits, milk chocolate and coffee, red wine, and a good caramel and toffee flavor. Plumy, cherry, fig, molasses, everything melds seamlessly.

Relatively low carbonation. Gives a full mouthfeel, with a sticky aftertaste.

Overall a wonderful beer. Definitely a sipper. Great beer for special occasions or just relaxing. This is belgian beer at it's best.

33cl bottle. Dark brown pour with a dark tan head and visible carbonation. Smells like apple brandy, burnt caramel, raisins, cocoa and chocolate. The taste includes all those notes, and, in addition, a bit of cola and milk coffee. Full bodied with medium carbonation and a sticky-sweet and roasty aftertaste. My favourite by quite a bit, from the Pannepot series.

This is the like the Port wine of beers. Thick, heavy, fruity. A real sipper. So much so, that I didn't finish it. Not because it wasn't good, but because I was done.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a slightly hazy, very dark mahogany brown, with a half finger light khaki head that dissipate to almost nothing; no lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dark stone fruit, raisins and figs, a bit boozy. Flavor is rich dark stone fruit, intense as if starting to be boiled down to syrup (but not at all syrupy), vanilla, raisins, a bit of date and figs, faint oak. Nice plumy finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A really nice dark fruit quad. I dry plums every year, and there is a point where they are almost done, but not quite dry that you can pull them out of the drier and the flavor has become incredibly intense and estery. This ale captures that flavor for me. The regular Pannepot is one of my favorite ales and tied for the best with St. Bernardus and Rochfort. This seems a bit more complex and rich and the touch of oak is welcome. Really a world class quad and ale.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, 2010 vintage, bottled 11/2014 printed on the label. My first encounter with this brewery and this beer - "Old Fisherman's Ale Aged On Oak". Found this bottle lurking along the shelves of the local bottle shop.

Poured into a Unibroue Maudite snifter.

A - Pours a deep tawny caramel-cola brown body; blackish when in the glass. Brings about one finger of fastly dissipating khaki head that lingers on as a ring. Minor sticky spotty lacing doesn't really cling. Appears well carbonated. Looks excellent for what it is.

S - Pleasant barrel / oak-aged aromatics: mustiness, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, toffee, cream, dried dark pitted fruits.

T - Taste follows the nose: lots of dark pitted fruits (figs, dates, plums, raisins), caramel, toffee, chocolate, vanilla, cream. Good oak-aging on an already complex quad base.

M - Feel is silky smooth & creamy. Medium-full body with excellent carbonation. Not too sticky or sweet; good depth of dark fruit / oak character.

Overall, excellent depth and duration of flavor. A wonderful oak aged quad. Glad to have stumbled upon this bottle.
