2007 vintage.

Pours a murky dark brown with a 2 inch tan head that fades to a small cap. Super thin rings of lacing line the glass on the drink down. Smells of caramel, malts, with muted whiffs of dark fruits (especially raisins) at first. However, as the beer warms there is a very nice smell of raisin puree. Taste is of raisins and prunes, brown sugar, caramel, and malt. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good level of carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink. Overall, this is a very good quad from Struise. If this was brewed in 2007 that potentially makes it 4 years old at this point. Time has treated this beer very good.

"Old Monk's Ale" - 2007;

Pours dark brown with perhaps a deep red tint; thin tan head.

Nose is red plum, bright red fruit, grape/wine character in the nose;

Mouthfeel is creamy, malty and rich feeling.

Flavors are sweet-smoke sugar; sweet coffee and deep whiskey/chocolate with espresso. Complex, layered, sweet character and a nice alcohol character.

Drinks well and one of the few of this type I'd like colder than room temperature. this is more of a sipping dessert beer.

Nice a bit unique. Carmel/toffee/coffee/malty finish with just a burnt carmel bitter finish.

Probably couldn't drink a lot this; too rich and sweet. Nice for a small amount. Like dessert.

09 vintage totally not worth the hype. pours a clear caramel color with a red trace and a minimal white head that fades to nothing in seconds. the smell is just fine, sweet residual sugars from a big ass malt profile, a touch of molasses, and plento of booze. the flavor is a letdown to me though. it has none of the complexity im accustomed to in a quad. nothing woody about this, nothing spirited and clever in the malts used, and just way too much sugar and booze. this is not an elegant beer. the mouthfeel is flat and watered down, made caustic from the alcohol, which should have mellowed out by now. sticky sweet feeling left after the last sip, a funny buzz, and a turning tummy. this isnt anywhere near one of the best quads ive had. good beer by other standards maybe, or maybe my bottle was bunk, but this was a huge letdown for me.

Poured out as a muddy brown color with a thin cream colored head on top. The smell has a good amount of dark fruit aromas and bready Yeast on the nose. The taste is sweet with more over ripe fruits a subtle spicy note in the finish. The feel is pretty rich but finishes dry. Overall it's a very good Quad, doesn't quite top Rochefort or anything but it's a close.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color. It poured with quarter finger high tan head that died down a bit but consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark fruits are present in the nose—plums and prunes seem to stand out in particular. The smell becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
T: Much like the smell, the overall taste is dominated by flavors of plums and prunes with slight amounts of associated sweetness. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes nothing like something that is 10% abv—the alcohol is very well hidden.

As a tremendous delicacy of a beer, the Pannepot takes the succulent Chimay Grand Reserve-like flavor, then makes is more savory and less carbonated- then the real magic happens. The oak aging delivers similar caramel, vanilla, and wood character that's given to bourbon with the same treatment.

The dark and purple-hued beer carries a more predominant brown color with yeasty haze that impedes light. Modestly carbonated at first, the rise of a thick blanket of foam reduces without the higher effervescent character of Trois Pistoles or Chimay Blue. Instead a swirl of the glass recaptures the espresso-like off white creme time after time.

Succulent aromas first explore the dialogue of fruity esters and spicy phenols with plumb, red grape, date, and vinous wines that balance against cracked peppercorn, light clove, and bourbony alcohols. Caramel, maple syrup, coffee, and toast round out the highly complex aromatic bill.

Malty flavors start the show with caramel sweetness, part from the barrel and part from malts, also show the taste of full bodied red wines, savory chocolate, coffee, vanilla, coconut, maple syrup, and mild toast. The interplay of plumbs, prunes, figs, dates, raisins, cherries against the oak tannin, peppercorn, cinnamon, and whiskey alcohols simply deliver wave after wave of complex flavors that just keep coming.

Full bodied, yet somewhat delicate to the palate- the beer's residual sweetness keeps it weighted, as does the milder carbonated value. But the patient development towards a semi-sweet, near-fusal alcohols, and powdery tannin texture closes the beer and allowing for a long savory-sweet finish to reward the palate long after the beer has disappeared.

With so much complexity built into the beer, it's an absolute delight to the taste buds as it will make a fine complement to any dinner in place of that port wine or cognac. For comparison's sake, there's just a few nuances that keeps it from competing with Rochefort 10.

My favourite style from one of my favourite breweries. Pannepot Reserve 2010 vintage. "Belgian Ale Brewed with Spices and Aged in Oak." I've had all the other Pannepot variants; really excited for this one. I try to avoid buying Belgian beers while in the U.S. because I know how much cheaper I can get them in Belgium, but I couldn't help myself when this came to my local beer store. Acquired for $7.99 USD. Expections could not be higher; every Pannepot I've had has been incredible. I loved the Grand Reserva. 10% ABV cofnirmed. "PnP No. 4" Bottle lot: 29|01|HH. Unpasteurized, unfiltered, and bottle conditioned. Imported by the Shelton Bastards. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with unbranded standard pry-off cap served into a Mitchells of Lancaster flared stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live.

Served cold, straight from the fridge, and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a lovely tan colour head, about 1.5 fingers in thickness. Nice soft complexion and creamy succulent texture. Colour is quite appealing given the style. Even consistent lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Supple, luscious, and inviting. No bubble show. Retention is quite good, around 7 minutes I'd say. The last of the creamy head clings to the surface, tantalizing the consumer. Soft and approachable.

Body colour is a a very dark ruby-black; solid and opaque. Some ruby glow at the bottom of the glass from scattered light. No yeast particles are visible, but it's nontransparent. Colour intensity is mild.

Looking good for a quadrupel. Very excited for this one.

Sm: Great. Dark fruits - including plum and fig. Cocoa powder, caramel, biscuit malts. Berry skin. Cream. Subtle supple oak in the background. Buried raisin. Dark currants and cherries emerge as it warms. A delightful mix of beautifully integrated dark fruit with very subtle oak notes. Luxuriously appealing. Traces of biscuity yeast. Some grape. Plum is dominant. An extremely subtle aroma with magnificent complexity. Mild in strength. No alcohol comes through. Can't wait to drink this one.

T: Ripples of luxurious dark fruit throughout - dates, dominant plum, fig, dark cherry, dark currants... Fruity notes are more overt than in many other top of the line quads; it lacks the masterful delicate subtlety of something like Westvleteren. Caramel. Hints of nutty notes. Biscuit malt. Some brown malt. Light cocoa powder. Some grape. Fruity sweetness up front slowly gives way to a bit of a more dry raisin body which still feels smooth and wet in spite of the hardening of texture. Nuanced. Oak isn't as splendorous as the aroma indicated; it's too restrained and timid here. I get the sense that the oak helps lend cohesion and focus to the many different flavours, but it doesn't offer much in terms of oaky or wooden taste. Not getting any subtle toasty or vanilla notes you might expect in an oak aged beer.

Overall, it's far more fruity than I expected. As a result, it's not quite as well balanced and built as other top Belgian quadrupels. Do I like it? Shit yes.

Mf: Supple, soft, smooth, and wet. Good carbonation; the bottle conditioning definitely helps it feel natural and apt. Good thickness and body. Good presence on the palate. Feels custom-tailored to the flavour profile. Extremely well done.

Still, it lacks the delicacy or fragility of superior quads.

Dr: Definitely a fine quad, no doubt. I'd definitely get it again at a better price; I can't justify the cost in the U.S. again knowing how little this would run be in Belgium. Hides its ABV very well and shows signs it would develop nicely with age. I'd definitely recommend this one to friends. Another jaw-dropper from De Struise. I tend to be hard on quads since they're my favourite, but this one I hold in high regard. I'd happily drink more than one of these in a night. I'm glad I'm not sharing it with anyone else.

Constructively, I'd like to see still more complexity and subtlety, as well as a refined fragile and delicate mouthfeel. Also, bring that oak out more, please! And maybe tame the fruit a bit. A bit too sweet and syrupy; I'm sure some reviewers will accuse it of being reminiscent of cough syrup but that's juvenile and reductive.

2010 consumed 2015: Dark mahogany brown, dense tan foam, ample lacing. Rich aromas of figs, dates, nutmeg, caramelized sugars. Equally rich taste, dark fruit and light spice, mild dry oak in the aftertaste. Smooth, full bodied, and viscous feel. Rich but not overly sweet or boozy. Makes a nice winter warmer.

2008 bottling

Appearance: A rather disappointing pour for a Belgian, with the head quickly dissipating and leaving the opaque mahogany colored liquid behind

Smell: Layered dried plum, oak, leather, caramel and brown bread

Taste: After sniffing the aroma, the taste is a bit of a letdown; the plum flavor is there in spades and the bread and caramel builds through the middle, but something is lacking; I am looking for a rich finish, but the oak and leather enters and fades without delivering; somewhat boozy

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: Expecting a six year old beer to deliver was perhaps a bit much, in this instance, but I thought the beer was going to be far more expressive and impressive than it turned out to be

Bottle courtesy of Bu11zeye: Poured a deep dirty cloudy brown color ale with a large foamy head with great retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of bubblegum ester with some candi sugar and some light spices. Taste is comprised of a sweet malt base which is well balance with some bubblegum ester and some light spicy yeast at the end. Very well balance with no apparent alcohol and a full body with great carbonation. I thought it was slightly less complex then the regular version but I would have to do a side-by-side comparison.

Pours a murky tawny color with a large and long-lasting head that leaves a coating of foam on the glass. The nose is rich, full of chocolate, raisins and molasses. There's a faint red wine-like tartness, and a odd mineral aroma beneath the surface. On the palate it's fruity and slightly tart, like a semi-ripe blackberry. A big chocolate malt flavor makes up the foundation, with subtler notes of tannins, minerals and figs beneath that. The finish is semi-dry and semi-tart with a light astringency. The full body and chocolatey, almost roasty malt profile make this an unusual quad, and a fairly good one.

330 ml bottle into chalice, 2009 vintage. Pours murky dark reddish brown color with a small khaki head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Minimal glass lacing with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, prune, fig, molasses, toast, clove, pepper, oak, light roast, brown bread, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and fruity/spicy notes with moderate oak presence. Taste of raisin, prune, fig, molasses, toast, toffee, clove, pepper, oak, brown bread, light roast, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, molasses, toast, toffee, oak, clove, pepper, brown bread, light roast, and earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of malt and fruity/spicy flavors; with moderate oak presence and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic oak aged quadrupel. Big complexity and great balance of flavors; and quite smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.
